A very sturdy bike carrier.
A very sturdy bike carrier that fit a 2023 RAV4 hybrid well using an add-on Curt 2" hitch receiver. Sufficient space between back window/lift gate and the inboard bike. Lift gate can be opened when the carrier holds an inboard bike and tilted downward. Does not block the vehicle tail lights and has minimal depth when in the fully upright (stowed) position. This carrier is heavy duty (and heavy) with good support having 2 supporting rails underneath rather than the typical single rail. I think it will do well on bumpy dirt roads. Pretty straight forward to assemble, install, and adjust. As for downsides seen so far. It's expensive, double the cost of the alternatives I was looking at on amazon. The paint scratches too easily, just setting it up on the garage floor led to bare spots and scratches that will need to be redressed before they rust. It's heavy making installing/removal likely a two person task. Components that hold the bike in place are plastic (vertical pole is solid metal), so have to see how long they last, but at least replaceable. Added some reflective material to improve visibility.
heavy duty rack with some realities
great product, however it took me an afternoon to adjust to my application. For example both trays have to be aligned with the bikes you hope to carry, it takes time to fits the bikes on the rack (making sure seat positions/handlebars do not interfere with each other). Also although it appears simle to operate it actually takes two people to lower the rack, so that you can acces your hatchback. the rack itself is heavy duty, but one person needs to take the weight of the release pin and the other has to pull the pin. Also I had give the pull pin for differenet positions and healthy dose of silicone to make so that it did not bind.
Yakima Quality for Heavy E-Bikes
When we bought new, and significantly heavier e-bikes, we needed an upgrade to our older Yakima HoldUp rack. This new OnRamp LX rack certainly fills the bill for us, with solid mounting for two 60-pound bikes. Yakima's threaded bolt on the 2" receiver hitch holds the rack tightly with minimal sway, and the addition of a second "safety" pin gives great peace of mind. The trays accept a wide variety of tire sizes and the central mast assures secure attachment. The trays can be moved several inches to accommodate different bike sizes.
Looks over function. Avoid.
Purchased, used once, and returned. Seems to have been designed to focus on looks and specs rather than by anyone who actually uses bikes. Extremely cumbersome to install. This is an install it and leave it rack, no quick on and off. The ramp is nice to have, but takes too much time to unscrew and rescrew together. Not sure why they didn’t just make it one piece. Fully aecuring bikes is nearly impossible. The single vertical arm limits placement of the upper straps. If you use only the same two bikes (in same placement) then you can leave the arms set, but for alternating bikes is complicated puzzle. The wheel trays are are too low, so the wheels don’t secure tightly. Further, the wheel chocks don’t have lower strap loops, so for normal road bikes, there’s lots of vertical space for the bike to bounce. The plastic ratchet straps don’t pivot so depending on the wheel size, you get a very weak / off angle connection. Lastly, trays are off center, so bikes hang out further on the drivers side. Bottom line, yes this bike rack does work, but it’s a bad design. Better racks (capable of carrying e-bike weights) exist for less. I’ve owned the Yakima Highroller rooftop bike carrier which was nearly perfect, so not sure how they got this design so wrong. This purchase did convince to spend significantly more money on a more premium rack solution.
OnRamp 2 - Discontinued w/ arrival of LX
CRITERIA: A. Rack Must fold up to fit in my garage without removing from vehicle B. Must be rated to carry up to 2 e-bikes. C. Must be able to lock rack to receiver, & lock bike(s) to rack easily. Bear in mind I’m 72 y/o. Hand/arm strength not what it used to be. I have used a Thule EasyFold eBike rack for 6+ years. Doesn’t fold up, so doesn’t fit in my garage and must be mounted every time I go out to ride. YAMIMA OnRamp (purchased thru REI May, 2024.). Now discontinued. Replaced with OnRamp LX model. GOOD: 1. East to install to hitch receiver. 2. Hitch bolt doubles as cable lock for bikes AND, it’s threaded to lock down tight against split-ring lock washer - not your normal hitch pin. This makes connection between hitch receiver & rack tongue very tonight, solid. 3. Folds up when not in use (can leave on vehicle). 4. Vertical center post folds down easily. 5. Rack folds down away from vehicle, (but MUST have 2 people to accomplish.) A small hydraulic cylinder arm would be a monumental improvement, allow it to be done by one person. 6. On my 2022 Maverick XLT, an 8” tongue extender allows tailgate (I chose to also install tailgate with optional Ford hydraulic arm) to open slowly & fully with rack in upright position - no need to get 2 people to release it to the rear. (This is not endorsed by Yakima probably because of rear release feature & assumed increase in lack of stability due to being further away from frame-mounted hitch tongue. Not my experience). BAD: 1. Ratchet straps in frame & tires must be pulled by hand to tighten - seriously? Compare to Thule EasyFold or similar. Ratchets do the work, not your hands/arms. 2. Post arms for attaching frame or seat post need to be adjustable length or come with different length horizontal arms. 3. Wheel straps are almost too short for even the 2” tire on my TREK DUAL SPORT+2 Stagger model. Only fits well & tight on outside tray. And you STILL have to pull them with your hands rather than having the ratchet do the work as on the Thule. Will have to order the optional “fat tire” straps. 4. Price at REI was even lower than discounted price on YAKIMA website (no longer stocking this model at REI, in favor of newer LX.). Problem: couldn’t be shipped to REI store, so had to pay $85 to ship to my home. 5. Center post needs a simple, but effective locking mechanism. Cut the cable, remove the bolt it rotate on and your bike(s) are gone! About a 2-3 minute job. OVERALL ASSESSMENT: Glad I have it. Would recommend newer model LX ($899 from Yakima or REI - probably e-trailer.com too), IF you can avoid shipping cost, e.g., thru REI.
Rock solid bike rack for heavy duty e bikes!!
It’s super easy to set up. The rack holds (2) 77lbs fat tire e-bikes with ease. The ramp is so nice to have!! Rock solid and has a bottle opener!!
Yakima OnRamp LX
This is my first 2 bike hitch rack which I’ve used for about 6 months so far. The REI bike shop installed the rack on my car and explained some of its features. I’m glad they did because there are multiple moving parts, plus I didn’t have the correct size socket wrench to secure it to the hitch. This bike rack accommodates two heavy electric bikes and fits well on a Subaru Outback XT with a 2 IN receiver (provided you turn off auto lift gate, backup sensors, etc). There are several adjustable points for a custom fit along with a “safety pin” for added stability. To lower the rack yourself when it’s on the car; release the pin, pull the release knob and apply slight upward pressure on the rack. It should engage easily. I really like how this bike rack has a low profile in the upright position so I can park in the garage without taking it off the car. But usually I remove it, which is easy enough. Also, Yakima customer service is outstanding. Craig was extremely helpful in locating a part I needed and quickly shipped it to me.
good rack but be aware of mechanics
good rack as advertised for heavier bikes, however the rack itself is heavy and certain actions require two people. if you are going to tilt the rack down to access your hatchback while there are bikes on the rack you will need to do this with two people. One person to pull the pin on the rack while the other person lifts the rack to take pressure off the pin. I soaked the pin with silicone spray and when it is under any weight, it is difficult to get the pin out to facilitate the rack being lowered. Finally for safety reasons anyone who purchases a platform rack should also consider going to the amazon site and purchasing a light option to put on the rack for when bikes on the rack. Many times bikes will obstruct the tail lights of the vehicle. Finally, it took me part of an afternoon to assemble the rack and adjust it for the two bikes I am most likely to carry.
Excellent Bike ral
This is a sturdy well made e bike rack I looked at Thule whchi had great reviews but one model had a lower weight capacity and another one was very bulky and heavy
Bad experience
Haven't even unpacked the rack. I have been battling with the REI credit card issuer to get the card. Visited the REI Tualatin store, your people weren't much help, gave me contact for the card co, they refer me back to the store. I feel like a hamster on a wheel in a cage. Still haven't been able to get the $100 credit that was promised.
