comfortable summer hiking pants

Breathes, dries quickly, lightweight, just the right amount of stretch, relatively durable, and over all well made. The negatives are that the sizing is off. Sizing is sort of goofy: waist need to size up; inseam is listed as 30.5" but they are 31.5"; rest of pants fit comfortable. I would have prefered belt loops instead of draw strings for waist, and a little lower rise.

Awesome Lightweight Pants but...

First off these pants are amazing, super lightweight and comfortable!!! Are they perfect though.. not yet.. but they have the potential to be if Mountain Hardwear can fix some of their issues. First off, like the other reviewers have said the sizing is a little off. I'm a 38 waist, but if feels like the pants came with a 36 waist, so I had to size up to a 40 in order to button it. But in doing so, now the rest of the pants are too baggy. It's like I need the waistband from the 40 combined with the size 38 pants in order for it to be the perfect pair. The other issue I have is I wish these pants were more tapered at the bottom from the knee to the ankle.. or at least have the option to tighten them at the cuff with some minimal shockcord. If those 2 issues are fixed, I believe Mountain Hardwear would have the perfect pair of lightweight do-anything go-anywhere pants on the market, but for now I'm gonna stick with my Outdoor Research Zendo Joggers.

Good enough.. but could be better with some fixes...

Love these pants, but the waist it too tight and needed to size up. I wish they were a little more tapered from the knee to the ankle. Also, I wish there was a way to cinch the very bottom, like on my rain jacket and maybe add some belt loops. Please fix those things for gen 2 and I'll for sure buy these pants again!!

Great pants! Size up.

These pants have a very nice fabric: lightweight, nice skin feel, quiet, very breathable, just a little stretchy, and certainly appropriate for hot weather which is exactly what I hoped for. The pockets are good sized and useful, although be aware the zip pocket on the leg is too small for a phone, but who cares, I don't like my phone there anyway. A pocket knife of just about any kind, a folded map, or a compass would fit perfectly in that pocket and wouldn't flop around. Build quality is excellent. My normal sizes are: 31 in jeans, 32 in dress pants, 32 or M in all hiking or climbing pants (Arcteryx Gamma LT, OR Ferrosi). These Trail Sender pants in 32 run tight on me in the waist, hips, and *ahem* crotch. They also bind up a bit in the legs if I take a high step. They fit like fashion jeans, and don't quite stretch enough to work well for hiking/climbing unless you size up. I went to 33 and found happiness. Looking forward to summer with these pants in the collection. They are a lighter fabric than my other favorites the Gamma LT, and just a bit lighter than even the Ferrosi. I got the Trail Dust and Black Spruce colors and they are very appealing in-person. More light colors would be appreciated. 4.5 stars, .5 taken off for lack of cuff draw string.

Decent - breathable but slightly baggier than I'd like and they don't stay over the top of my boots

Just took these out on their maiden backpacking voyage on a gorgeous 9-mile loop about 2.5 hours from Denver. Overall they are decent, but I don't like them as much as my Prana Stretch Zion pants (not the Zion II though I am going to buy a pair of those soon - the reviews on them are very much mixed so we'll see). Back to the Trail Senders - lots of folks have complained about them being too tight, but I guess I have tiny legs as I find them a bit baggier than I would like. Not too bad, just not as form-fitting as I prefer. The pocket on the side is also a hair small but can just fit a camera lens. My biggest gripe is they don't stay over the top of my Zamberlan Vioz boots, which can be annoying when traversing through snow as some can get down my boots. They are pretty burly so if you are wearing thinner boots or trail runners, you'll probably be fine. They are incredibly lightweight and breathable though, so excellent for warm summer hikes. I do question the durability as the material is so thin. I probably wouldn't take them on winter treks or super rugged or brambly terrain. The inner drawstring works well to keep them on my narrow hips though I have to remind myself to undo it before taking a dump. Lastly, the black spruce color is definitely lighter than the pictures show which I didn't like as much, but they're still fine.

God tier backpacker

The sun does not EVER touch my skin. The material is not quite as soft as the Astro's, and overall the comfort and cut is just one notch below the Astro. However, the Trail Senders are still a solid 9/10 for cut and.comfort. These are the lightest pants on my list that are not jogger style. These have just enough bagginess to avoid trapping heat like the Incendo's do. It's also nice to have four pockets. Two normal side pockets, that could be slightly bigger but work fine. One zipper cargo pocket on the right side, and one zippered back pocket on the right side. All of the pockets are on the smaller side of acceptable (none of them are too small). They have held up well to class 3 and 4 rock climbing, and to bushwhacking too. No noticeable wear on them yet. Material and cut are well made for climbing. They do create a bit of noise while moving, but not too loud. It does have a DWR treatment, but it's not the most water repellent. I'm finding that these weaker DWR treatments might actually be a good thing, because it promotes better sweat management. No belt loops, but it does have a stretchy drawstring. It has a button closure and a normal zippered fly. I can simply pull them down in the front to pee, or unzip if I want. I bought these pants to walk my dog. I think you'll find they work great for backpacking.
