Hiplok  Hiplok DX1000 Bike Lock

I use this, with some other items listed below, to secure my Aventon Aventure.2 (fat-tire ebike) overnight at home and for hours-long events elsewhere in Denver, CO. Note that a fat-tire is too wide to get the shackle of the D1000 OR DX1000 around the tire. The only place it can mount to for a fat-tire ebike is likely going to be the frame. To be clear, no lock will beat every thief - they are at best deterrents. This is the best singular piece of deterrent out there as far as my hours of research and planning could find (except maybe Skunklock's equivalent with the chemical interior). For expensive bikes, there should be a strategy for locking up your bike. Mine is this Hiplok DX1000, a Kryptonite 1217 chain, Project 529 registration and stickers on the rear wheel, front wheel, battery, and frame, and a remote-control alarm from Amazon. I also have cheap insurance ($240/yr or so) that will cover it in the event it does get stolen.

I've had this lock for a month now and it has provided more peace of mind than other bike locks that were in the $100+ range. I did drop it once in my apartments bike room and the rubber coating had split, exposing the metal frame. I expected the exterior to be just a bit more durable.

Used an REI 20% for this one. The regular price was just way out of reach. At $280 and with all the positive reviews on the internet I thought this would be the one lock to rule them all. Nope. Out of the box I immediately crossbar was loose. I'm used to Kryptonite locks that are very solid with very little wiggle room in the shackle and crossbar. The Hiplock was very loose. Still locked but had a lot of play. I've read other reviews that said the same so I figured it was designed that way. Without really having had used the lock I went to unlock it and the crossbar plastic fell apart. It split in half. Not having any faith for long term durability (plus spending that much on a lock and it splitting a few days after having it without any actual use) I took it back to REI. The CS rep asked what was wrong with it, picked it up, and one half of the crossbar plastic completely came off causing the lock to hit the counter. I just pointed and shrugged. No matter what glowing reviews it gets, the one I got did not feel solid or reliable at all. It might have been functional but come on. I'll stick to Kryptonite.
