Love this little thing

I love the classic candle lanterns, and I got this after my first one broke due to heavy winds. I use this as illumination and slight warmth when I work out in my backyard. As the product promises, the flame is moderately protected against being blown out by light winds, and lasts for several hours. Just don’t expect it to light vast expanses of areas.

Tried and true - not for throwaway society types.

Tried and true - not for throwaway society types. A family member had one of the originals from the 1970's or 80's and gave it to me. Originally these were made of solid brass and no plastic. They don't make them like that anymore :( However, the "new" original is still great and the bees wax candles still burn like beeswax. That is to say they burn hot and for a long time. All the parts are replaceable (check UCO's website) so if you happen to brake the glass you won't need to throw away the whole lantern. I keep one in my truck incase I get stuck some day. The beeswax candles last longer and heat more than their other candles. I don't think you could easily burn up a tent using one of these and I've seen videos of people using them for a little heat in small (1-2 person) tents. If you run this thing on an uneven surface or tip it over, wax can make a mess. In that case it's best to put it in the freezer to make the wax pull away from the body of the lantern. This makes cleanup pretty easy. All you have to do is pick at the cold wax and it cracks/breaks off easy. You can also put it in an oven (less then 100F) to soften the wax without melting the plastic bottom too. I try to always use the chain hanger to avoid messes but it stands up fine too. I've never had one get destroyed including one that's over 40 years old.

really happy

Let me start by saying this doesn’t put out enough light to play a card game comfortably without squinting a little. However, it makes me really happy having it on my table while enjoying a warm dinner out in the woods. It adds the perfect amount of light to see what you’re doing - also adding a very comfortable ambiance. It’s the little things, right?!

I didn't buy mine from REI, but I've had this for almost two years and I really like it. It adds a nice vibe once it gets dark enough to make a difference.

Safe night light for tent

I got mine several years ago when we camped and it was so dark that I woke up in my tent freaked out. I got this for my next trip and it kept the flame low all night. I just tied it to the lamp ties on the ceiling. Totally safe.

UCO candles only

Due to construction and design, UCO says only the Laterns will only use there custom made candles. Which are harder to find and expensive.
