Good idea, poor execution!
The system seems to work well enough, once you manage to get the bag filled with water. In deep, flowing water, or if there is even a tiny waterfall, this is easy enough. In standing water, especially shallow ponds or puddles as ovften serve as water sources in backcountry settings, it is impossible to fill the reservoir without some hard-sided container (a water bottle, cup, something), and the filter has a special attachment, so you cant just use a different bottle for dirty water.
Handled pulled off on first use
The handle pulled off on the first day of use. This was scary as we were counting on the filter for a 9-day trip in the Boundary Waters. However, we were able to be creative and find ways to use the filter by holding it, placing it on rocks, etc. (see the pic). The filter was fast and did not clog during the trip. We did not backwash, only used the shaking method to clear the filter. I estimate that we filtered about 80L of water. Note: the filter doesn't remove all the tannins, the water still had color. You would need a filter with carbon to remove all the color.
Great concept! Poor quality!
I love the concept but the workmanship on this product is terrible. It broke the first time we had it out on the trail because the pegs that hold the handle are glued onto the plastic bladder and it is not designed to withstand 6 pounds of water being pulled by gravity! So we couldn't hang it after that without poking a hole in the plastic so we just had to have one of us hold it while the other filled their vessels. what if I was alone out there? i gave two stars because I like the concept but really it deserves 1 star. i hope they figure out how to make it stronger!
Unusable
Put water in it, and strap broke immediately when I lifted it up. First use. Do not buy this. Definitely get a different one that has a reinforced strap on the top to hold up the water bag.
The Strap broke on the Bag on Three Different Ones
I had three of these, the strap failed on all these within 1-2 uses. I had the strap ghetto tied up and was stil using it until the strap ripped off the other side too. The filter itself is great, the strap on the bag that hangs is absolutely a terrible flaw in the system.
Don’t buy
I want to love this because it’s so versatile in terms of fitting multiple bottle openings. It also filters quickly. However, the handle has manufacturing issues and either pops off or comes with only 1 side installed. So, you can’t hang it up. I returned one & bought another & both failed. Tried contacting the company with no luck
Faulty
Saw someone using the 1L version on a smart water bottle and it was so fast. Naturally I wanted one for my 4L bladder but was disappointed that I needed a special bag for it to use as a gravity. I bought it anyways and it broke, so I bought another and it broke and they both had an obvious flaw in the same place. When I returned for a second time I checked the rest of them on the shelf and they are all flawed and must have been a production issue so now I don't have one. The strap breaks because the impulse seal on the strap is faulty. Would be better to be plastic cut out grommets like the old 4L gravity, and then just supply your own material to hang... Also, this is fragile and can freeze, unlike the MSR home link. I still want this but I guess I'll wait... bummed
Works but strap broke with first use.
My paddling partner purchased one of these for a Boundary Waters trip to use for group water at camp. While the filter itself worked the entire time, one side of the handing loop broke off the reservoir the first time we hung it up - just like the other reviewer here. I don't know why they decided to glue the strap to the bag, instead of hard mount it. Seems like a silly oversight for something that's supposed to hold 6.6+ lbs of weight regularly. Other than having to rig up a hanging system, the filter itself worked smooth and surprisingly quick. I think we back flushed it twice on a 5 day trip. Unscrewing the filter from the bag only takes about a 1/4 turn, which made refills that much faster. Overall, it works, and the rest of the design/usage is pretty great, but the strap really needs to be more durably mounted to the bag.
Strap broke
Strap broke on first use, filter is fast and the bottle attachment fits on a standard 2l nalgene bottle. It has one loop on filter end of the bag that you can use as a handle once the blue one breaks but you cant hang it up anymore Dont buy this. The katadyn befree system is cheaper and works just aswell, I also recommend looking at the Hydrapak seeker its much more robust.
Handle busted on first use
I honestly don’t remember how long ago I received the filter (as a gift )since we usually use my friend’s gravity bag filter when backpacking. However she wasn’t with me this trip and this was the first time I had to use it and the strap literally busted the very first time I tried to hang it. So disappointing!!! Now I am stuck with a bag that I can’t hang!
