The Volvo of bike helmets

Nobody wants to dwell on crashing their bike, but wearing your helmet is a good habit that will pay off if you ever go down. As a paramedic and a 50-year cyclist, I give a lot of thought to protecting my brain. I've been a big fan of MIPS since bouncing off the pavement about ten years ago; it is the standard for all the helmets I wear. Now, the clever Dutch have recognized that eBikes have the potential for high energy accidents and they've developed a more demanding standard for bike helmets, ridden at higher speeds. Speed equals energy, and the faster you move, the greater the forces imparted to your fragile melon. The Smith Payroll conforms to this higher standard and provides more protection for higher risk cycling. I have a large head, and the XL fits me perfectly. It seems to wrap around my skull a bit more than other helmets. A dial at the occiput allows you to adjust the fit easily, with one hand, even while riding. Even with my equestrian head, I can fit a beanie or cycling cap under the helmet if needed. The chin strap is a fuss-free system that also allows adjustment. The Payroll feels substantial on your head, but the nineteen vents ensure that you stay cool. There are a few neat camo colorways, but I got the flat black and it's very sleek. The visor has three positions, and can be removed, but that leaves a couple of strange-looking holes in the helmet's shell. I had the dubious pleasure of riding in the rain with the Payroll, and the visor was very effective at keeping my glasses mostly dry. I wish I was one of those people who look cool in their bike helmet, but I'm just happy to be well-protected. It should be mentioned that, if you ever do crash your helmet, it should be replaced. Smith has a standard crash replacement policy, with a discount if you destroy your helmet.

Made for a hard ride

The Smith Payroll MIPS helmet feels slick even though it may look a little bulky. I cannot vouch for the mips functionality, I do my best to never actually need it. The helmet, once adjusted, stays on where it needs to be without any shifting on a rough trail and with sweat. The visor flips up and down as desired, but looks pretty silly when it’s up… The straps are a bit difficult to adjust but get easier with wear. The difficulty in adjusting the straps may lend to the straps not needing readjustments after a hard ride.

Nice helmet, difficult chin strap adjustment.

I was supplied with this helmet at no cost by REI for an independent review. The helmet is well made, very sturdy, and fits great after adjustment. I wear a med-large, the tested helmet is a large and it was able to be fitted securely. No, no falls or head bashing adventures so far with thus helmet but it appears to be able to provide great protection. The adjustable head lock system is standard and works well. It has a nice sun visor that is not adjustable, it works. Lots of airvents, although in 55- 65°C weather not many are needed. My biggest peeve with this helmet is the chin strap adjustment. The straps from the helmet are adjusted through a complicated winding below the ears, it is a one piece plastic triangular form. There is no hinge lock despite what the instructions claim. The actual chin strap allows tightening under the chin but nothing adjusts where the straps fit below the ears. It requires taking up slack on one side or another to adjust the strap fitment from the helmet and too often, tugging on the chin strap pulls out the piece you just adjusted. I ended up folding the excess strap material, pulling back on the helmet side of the adjuster to somewhat lock it in place. If there were a more secure method to asjust this chin strap i'd give it 5 stars!

Light and airy

The Payroll is a light, comfortable, and well ventilated helmet. Most bike helmets are lightweight already, but this model seems to take it a step further. There is an open cellular structure (they call it Koroyd) between the shell and liner, essentially creating columnar structures that can buckle at impact to absorb the shock and energy of the blow. It also allows air to flow through, so it vents and protects at the same time. There is also the usual protective foam in the liner, and a network of soft comfort foam pads on the inside to make it very comfortable on the head. The weight, venting, and comfort make it very easy to wear for long rides. It is so well vented that it can feel quite chilly on the head in wind or on lower temperature days. The fit system is easy to use and is part of the inner suspension system that makes it MIPS compliant. The visor can rotate out of the way, but isn't removable. The only minor knocks on this helmet is the cellular structure appears to be rather fragile, which may unintentionally get damaged in handling, and the inner fits system is light and seems a little less rugged than others.

Extra Protection Without Extra Baggage

I dig this half-shell helmet. I’ve worn it on 4 rides for a total of about 50 miles and now it’s become my go helmet when I hit the trail. With more coverage, KOROYD, and Mips, it’s definitely a protection forward helmet. I was a little worried that it might be hotter or feel bulky, but I haven’t noticed a difference between it and my other helmets. The vents seem well placed and do their job. Something that really sets this helmet apart from others that I’ve had are the straps! They sit flat and don’t rub, which is waaaay better than single-piece type of staps that have a twist in the side loop. The helmet stays put even when hitting big jumps or sessioning tight jump lines. It sits snug without any notable pressure points. Also the adjustable visor is a little longer than most, giving more sun protection when you need it. I definitely recommend this top notch helmet for everything except gnarly, rocky, downhill rides that call for a full-face helmet.

Great helmet for commuting!

This helmet is more heavy duty than my previous bike helmets (rated for faster speeds, etc). However, it didn't feel heavy on my head during rides up to30 miles. I love that it has MIPS for more protection. The helmet is very breathable and I like the visor for sunny days. It took me a little while to figure out the adjustments around the ears, but was comfortable after adjusting. The padding on the inside of the helmet is also quite soft and comfortable.

Great, with minor inconveniences

This is a great helmet. The fit feels great. I have a smaller head and the tightening strap worked very well. It felt extremely secure, but not really tight. It sits higher on the forehead than my other helmets. It wasn't bad, just something I had to get used to. It felt out of the way, which feels great, but I'm not sure if that means less protection in the front if I were to need it there. Since I do have a smaller head, I got the small. It fit my crown great, but the straps seemed tight around my neck at the longest length I could get it to go. Around the ear, there is a little dip down in front of the ear. I am not sure what that is for, but it makes it difficult to put sunglasses on one handed. Not the end of the world, but it does add a bit more time to an action that is usually very quick. It was light weight and very breathable. My road bike helmet is much lighter, but this feels like it will protect a lot more and is still very cool on warm days.

Great Helmet!

This helmet is very lightweight and comfortable with exceptional interior padding. The straps are easily adjusted and do not interfere or irritate my ears. This helmet is also easily adjustable with an interior adjustable ratchet system. The helmet is sturdy, well built, and has ample ventilation. The visor is easily adjustable to three positions or removed if desired. The MIPS system is a safety requirement for me. This is absolutely my go-to helmet for trail and mountain bike rides.

It's even E-bike certified!

This is the first E-bike rated Mountain Bike helmet I've used out on the trails, it feels much sturdier than most other MTB helmets and it feels like it covers and protects more surface area. As soon as you put it on, you feel well protected. This Matte Black model is perfect for crisp mornings and evenings and it even holds up against a little bit of drizzle. It's a little warm for hot days. Overall I'd recommend this helmet to anyone riding an E-bike.

Solid Helmet, Great Coverage

The Smith Payroll was very comfortable and easy to adjust for a great fit. Adequate ventilation, even in the hot desert conditions. Love the extra protection for the back of the skull. The only complaint is that it's a bit bulky on smaller heads. It appears as if I have a large mushroom on top.
