Love them
Purchased extra large so insulation wouldn’t be crushed; large felt tight. Used snowboarding twice, morning 36 / afternoon high 40’s wet snow. Gloves were wet and cold on outside but on the inside my hands were toasty warm all day. No cold finger tips. I used a waterproof wax for leather to add water protection on second trip. I’m looking forward to using them in high 20’s when that day comes and see how they perform. So far they are my favorite. They fit under the jacket cuff. Really soft and non restrictive. Great dexterity. Will use on all backcountry mountaineering trips, backpacking in hiking in snow.
Versatile Hiking Gloves for Cold Weather
These are really great gloves for hiking during the winter. They allow great dexterity allowing easy usage of hiking poles, and grabbing items from backpacks without having to remove them. They are water resistant enough to perform well in the rainy Northwest and feel tough enough to use collecting firewood and other abrasive activities (I have only used them a few times so far, it will be interesting to see how they hold up over time). Overall I only have one small complaint, the thumbs have a seam that often ends up right on the pad of my finger, which can be an irritant when holding or grabbing anything. I am hopeful it will smooth out over time.
Do not recommend
These were a Christmas gift that a family member bought me over a year ago. They started to pull apart the third time that I wore them skiing. There was no rough use and the stitching separated just from taking them on an off. They are also not warm at all. I got mild frostbite on a 15-20 degree (Fahrenheit) day. The tips of my fingers are still numb 5 days afterward. I took the gloves to the store to try to replace them anyway. But since REI changed their returns policy, they wouldn't replace them. There was a time when I shopped at REI and spent many thousands of dollars there. Now I avoid REI and seek out my locally owned store instead. There is just no reason to shop at REI and especially to buy REI-branded items anymore.
Wonderful gloves!
I love these gloves! They are very comfortable and provide good protection from the cold to around 25 degrees. The look and styling make them suitable for dress or work.
Great gloves, great value
These are exactly what I was looking for. After my dog chewed up my Hestra Fall Line and Flylow Ridge, I replaced them with BD Sparks, one of which pretty quickly came apart at the seams. So, I can compare these to all three. I wear a 9 in the Hestra and a M in the BD and Flylow, and got a Medium in these. The fit is a bit longer and skinnier, which works for my hand. I'd say the dexterity is on par with the Hestras and better than the others. I find these to be the most comfortable of all four. These are probably not quite as warm as the others but I wear mittens on colder days anyway. I treated them with Sno Seal before my first use and have no issues with water so far. Love these gloves overall.
great for cycling too!
I bought these for cycling in and near freezing temps. They work great for that. Probably also work well for skiing too, although I prefer a gauntlet style for that. These slide on and off easy when damp (the lining doesn't pull out with your hand). They are reasonably lightweight for a mostly leather glove. The knit wrist allows airflow up into your sleeve for ventilation. I have not tried them in heavy soggy rain, but so far so good! My hand measures 9.25 inches, and I went with XL. They are perfect. The size chart would have put me in size L, and there's no way that would have worked.
Fingers Are Too Long
I tried these on in the store before I bought them, but I didn't realize how long the fingers were until I got them home and tried to wear them to do anything outside. Even if I pull the gloves down as far as I can, there's a 1/2 inch of space at the ends of my fingers. Size XS was too tight on my hands and I feared it would make my circulation poor out in the cold, so I bought S. I don't have stubby fingers and I feel like my hands are pretty regularly proportioned. Get the Guide Mittens instead. They are fantastic! I was hoping to have both so I could use the gloves for outdoor winter work, but now I'm guessing I'll just need to give them away.
Solid glove for the price
Solid all-around winter glove for the price. Recently used these for winter hikes and a three day backpacking trip to Sequoia and Yosemite. These gloves were solid all around for down to about 30 degrees before wanting something warmer. Great look and feel.
Didn’t hold up
I bought these gloves to wear this winter on the farm. They were super comfortable and warm — I never had issues with my hands being too cold unless my hands sweat but then it didn’t last too long. However, after just 2 weeks of wear, the stitching started to come out in several places along the palm and the seam in the web of the thumb. I used these gloves for 1-2 hours a day, each day, to bring horses in and out, carry water buckets, and handle hay. Not very hard work. So I was extremely disappointed that these gloves didn’t hold up. Exchanged them for a certain wool-based brand that I know will hold up. If you are using these for light duty, they’ll be great. If you are an average sized woman, the small might still be a little big but probably doable. I thought the fingers were a bit long but I managed just fine.
Comfortable, but not at all durable
The gloves are the right warmth for shoveling, but within two weeks of buying them the stitching failed & holes started to develop in four places along the palm & fingers.
