Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. For Hip measurement, measure around your body at the widest point of your hip. If right at the edge of the measurements listed, size up or down based on your upper body size or how you prefer your sleeping bag to fit. A closer fit will provide better insulation, and a looser fit will allow for a bit more room. It’s important to not have too much room for proper insulation.

I was sent this item as part of the REI Trailblazer program in exchange for my honest review. I've spent the last couple weeks getting to know this bag and putting it through it's paces. I love that you can order it in different sizes to fit your frame so that it keeps you warmer while sleeping and you don't have to carry excess weight in your backpack. I even love the classic navy/mustard color scheme. As a side sleeper, one of my main concerns with a bag this shape is feeling constricted, but I didn't experience any interruption to my sleep due to feeling restricted while using the Magma 30 (for reference I am 5’2”, pants size 6/8, chest 32dd). Another feature to love about the Magma 30 is the extra insulation at the foot of the bag. I have difficulty falling asleep when my feet are cold and I didn't struggle with cold feet at all while using the Magma 30. As the name implies, the Magma 30 is rated to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. I tested this bag at various sleeping temperatures over the past two weeks, with the lowest temperature coming in at 38 degrees (with wind and rain, it is winter in the PNW). While I would have used a camp blanket for added warmth if I wasn't specifically testing the warmth of this bag alone, I was plenty warm and cozy the entirety of the cold, blustery night-I slept in sweatpants and a sweatshirt). Features that take this bag above and beyond: Interior/exterior zipper pulls with a loop at the bottom for hanging storage Feather bolster to block chill at the neck Cinchable hooded top with interior drawstring and loop to stabilize the drawstring (it's the little things, ya know) Customizable sizing-to avoid excess weight and ensure optimum warmth Added warmth at the foot of the bag Interior pocket for personal items Includes both a large stuff sack-for long term storage to not compress the feathers and small stuff sack-to compress the bag for backpacking (there is a loop on the end to make pulling out the bag super easy) Quilted interior and exterior stitching for even dispersion of feathers Heavy duty zip and intentional stitching to avoid jams Overall I’m thrilled to have this bag added to my gear and I look forward to using it for many years to come! (Currently we love it so much we leave it out on the couch to use while watching TV).

The REI Co-op Magma 30 Sleeping Bag is a super lightweight bag with very comfortable material. The Short + Narrow size accommodates a 5’2” slim-built person and most likely would be too tight for anyone bigger than that. It may be difficult to calculate the correct size but going bigger may be best. The bag provides a snug fit with good cinching and insulating collar yoke adding to the coziness. While the zipper starts more frontal, the midline path near the hip causes discomfort while side-sleeping. Also, the zipper is difficult to re-zip once fully detached. The zipper pulls add to the ease of functioning. The bag packs down into a convenient size for backpacking.
Cat tested, cat approved. Great sleeping bag!
I’ve used this bag on two trips on the Timberline Trail and most recently on the Wonderland. Both times I was cold and it was no where near freezing temps. I spent 5 cold, sleepless nights in this and will only use it for a blanket in our van from here on out. There’s barely any down in it and so when you lay on your side, you literally have no insulation at your hip or shoulder. Wind easily bites through the poor zipper baffles. I have an awesome Marmot bag and was hopeful this would be a good summer option but I wouldn’t take it on any trip where the lows are below 50.
I am a 70 year old 5'9" 165lb the standard medium size is a perfect fit form me. This bag is extremely light and compact. I have used it on 2 bike packing trips the latest the temperature got down to 38 deg. I stayed warm with medium socks and long johns sleeping on a 1" thermarest pad. Only complaint is that could use a little more down in a couple of the baffles. My new favorite sleeping bag, I have other bags.
Kept me warm and cozy on my AT’24 thru hike. Started March 10th finished October 3rd. Had cold and wet periods and it did fine. I will say a silk liner is worth it. Mine was only +5• In unison they work great. Warmer months it’s too much, just slept in the liner. Liner also keeps the bag cleaner. Cleaner down is more effective down.
This is a great sleeping bag for what I intended. Not for tent camping but for in a trailer or inside in a place there is no bedding like for hunting cabin or overlanding trailers. I am 5’8”. If I was any taller I would need the Large size. The zipper is great and does not get caught up in the material which is something my more expensive camping bags cannot say.
Very nice and warm, perfect for long backpacking trips. Surprisingly short too, and very comfortable.
I bought this to replace a well-loved but heavy sleeping bag. This quilt is awesome - warm, compact and packs easily into my backpack!
