Many great features with one huge let-down

I really want to love these. They hit a ton of great notes: 1. Super comfy. 2. Nice amount of stretch. 3. Zippers on all pockets. 4. Cuff elastic for warmer days or biking. 5. Don't immediately scream "HIKING PANTS" when you wear them around. Very nice casual pants in addition to sport uses. 6. They upgraded the button from the terrible snap style most of their other pants/shorts have. It feels more secure. 7. Soft lining on the waistband for wearing a backpack or climbing harness. 8. Internal tie for waist, for backpack or harness. 9. Soft pockets, better than mesh on some others. Truly, these would have been my favorite travel pants, but for a couple of things. 1. PILLING. I've had these a couple of months and worn them maybe four or five times. I'm already seeing pilling on the fronts of the legs, which isn't a high-wear area like the inside of thighs. I'm not sure how sturdy this material is, but it's worrying, especially for such expensive pants. I think Kuhl needs to go back and make a new version. My Renegade Rock pants, which are admittedly a bit more "snowpants" sounding, have not pilled at all, despite having owned them for several years. I would happily take this design made with the RRP material. 2. Minor gripe, but I prefer the shape of the front hand pockets on the Renegade Rock. They don't have zippers, but stuff is less likely to fall out when the openings are more horizontal. It's also more comfortable to jam my hands into. Might be personal preference, but it's important when I'm planning to use them a lot. 3. Colors. Renegade Rock comes in seven colors, this comes in two. They really need to add the nocturnal blue as a jean replacement color, and ideally brick red or something similar. Plus straight black, because these would honestly work fairly decently in a semi-formal setting if you're traveling lightly. In the mids, these are warmer than many soft shell pants. I like this, since I have Renegade Rock, Zions, and others which work better in warmer weather. But they have less venting and are thicker, so be aware of this if you want to use in higher temps. If they can fix the pilling issue, and offer more colors, this will likely become my regular cooler-weather pant. I do love so much about them. But until the quality of the fabric is improved, I can't recommend it.

Great, but pills badly

Bought these for my Dad and he absolutely loves them. The only issue is that the pants pill horribly. He never puts them in the dryer, only machine washes and he said by the first wash they had already pilled. Would be great if the material could be better quality.

Love these pants

Love these pants! I wear them hiking and for travel. The material is thin enough that it is cool on warmer days and the cut is generous enough so that on cold days I can layer a thermal weight base layer underneath. The zipper pockets are a must for overseas travel and the placement of the pockets are perfect so I can keep accessories in place without hindering my movements. One thing that is a negative, it seems the material is pilling on the front thighs after just a couple of washes in gentle cycle, using Nikwax tech wash, and line drying. Maybe it's a one-off. I'll start wearing another pair to see if the same thing happens.

Ripped Easily & Not as Good as cheaper REI brand

I bought these pants for a summer trip to Iceland and also a pair of the regular-degular REI pants like this. These were a splurge compared to the REI pants. My wife and I got caught in a light rainstorm and she was wearing REI pants. These pants were much less water-resistant than the REI pants that cost significantly less. These pants also ripped at the ankle on only the second wear. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because they are comfy.

Great soft shell pants

Great soft shell pants, perfect for a winter hike. With a base layer underneath they provide the perfect amount of protection from the wind to keep you warm while being just breathable enough to prevent overheating.

Perfect hiking/hunting pants.

Great pants! Light, flexible, and seems durable. I’ve tried several different pants for hiking, these are my favorite so far. Probably not ideal for really cold weather, but throwing a decent base layer under them would take you below freezing pretty easy I think.

Everything the description says and more

These are awesome. The fit is great and I love the flex/stretch features of the pants. It really makes active walks/hikes much more enjoyable. Water sheds easily to keep you dry and comfortable. (Tested in a light rain for a short time)

Great, but not black

They fir well and I like the fabric. The pictures online made them look black, but they are actually a dark smokey green. Dark Storm isn't very descriptive when indicating color. Side pockets are too small for a standard cell phone, but you can keep some small thin stuff in there, like your credit card and ID. Overall I like them though.

Exchange required for pants fit

I have a pair of Transcendr pants that fit well. I purchased a second pair online in a different color, same size, and they were tight at my thighs. I returned them to our local REI store and reordered one size larger. Perhaps REI should check Kuhl's quality control, and see if they can improve on sizing consistency. The actual exchange process went smoothly.
