One design flaw
This is my second black hole duffel. I already have the 40L and get a lot of use out of it and have checked it on occasion and it can take a beating. I bought this bag primarily to use as a checked bag, but I have one issue with it and it's the length of the handles. They are unnecessarily long. I'm 5'4" and when I pick up the bag is barely leaves the ground and rubs against my ankle, making the handles kind of useless for me, but also a hazard thinking they will get caught on something when I check it. Not sure how to deal with this or if I will keep. One other thing, but less of an issue, the security zippers are less smooth when zipping and I wish this just had the same zippers as the 40L.
Massive, Light, and Tough
If you are actually going to pack 70L of stuff, then you need the lightest bag and this is it. The straps are good for that 20 min walk through the airport, but I wouldn't use them for much more, since they are minimally padded. It's just enough to not wish you had wheels. The double handles on the sides are also useful for running through the Paris train station with a boat anchor when you need to 2 man something you shouldn't really be putting in the luggage. These were the bags of choice for all kinds of gear and abuse during a sail across the Atlantic.
Giant for 70L!
This bag is *massive*! I have an old 60L black hole duffel and I wanted something just a little larger. My bf has the 70L First Ascent duffel and it’s the perfect size. If he doesn’t stuff it completely full, he’s never had an issue with using it as a carry on but it definitely has more space than my 60L black hole. This 70L bag is absolutely giant. No way you could use it as a carry on, even if it’s only half full. If you want a giant duffel for long trips and will always be checking the bag when flying, then it is a very nice duffel! Just not what I thought I was buying.
Great travel option!
I purchased this bag because I already have two black hole duffels (45 & 55 L) from Patagonia. I wanted to get a larger bag to use for some international travel. The group I was traveling with required soft side bags because transporting them in the back of a van for our visit will allow more bags to be packed in a tight space. This bag works very well for that purpose. I also really like the back pack straps that allow the bag to be carried easily when a cart is not available. Admittedly, they are not the most comfortable straps in the world and I would not consider backpacking with this bag but they work quite well for short walks in the airport or to get to your base camp or hotel. And they fit into the pocket super easy for a quick install after you grab this from the luggage carousel. As for size, it is big. Could you use it as a carry on? Maybe if it wasn't packed full, but it would depend on how strict the person is watching you board the plane. I don't plan on trying to use it as a carry on - I have the 55L for that if I need to. This bag shines as a rugged and water resistant piece of luggage. My only concern when I pack is to make sure I stay under the weight limit. All in all, I am very happy to add it to my options for travel.
Beyond The Event Horizon!
I picked up the Black Home duffle for a recent trip to the Jersey Shore. It exceeded my expectations. I was able to pack for a three week trip with no problem. It also looks fantastic. I see that Patagonia also makes wheeled versions of the Black Hole and That would be something I would consider for a future trip. I didn’t need the shoulder straps but they are in a pocket and easily mounted if required in the future. The REI staffer who handled my pickup took the trouble to make sure the straps were there before I left the store. All in all an excellent experience and a satisfying purchase.
Great duffel
This duffel holds everything…perfect for an upcoming week-long trip
Tough and high capacity
As the name implies, this beast of a bag fits a lot of stuff. From the fabric to the stitching, this bag is made tough, and has held up well. These come in a range of sizes and for me, this is about the biggest I would be willing to haul around. The only odd thing about the bag is the way the backpack straps attach, which required a quick YouTube search for me to figure out.
Excellent as expected
Like with nearly all of Patagonia’s other products, this is an excellent one. It lacks proper interior organisation and quality of life features like a shoe compartment, but what it lacks it makes up for in its light weight yet extremely rugged construction. The backpack straps are more comfortable than expected, though the bag lacks structure so unless it’s fully packed, it will sag when carried which makes it less comfortable to carry on your back. But then again, I don’t think carrying a fully packed 70L duffel on your back would be that comfortable either. I’ve spent the last two months dragging and throwing this bag around airports, sand dunes, swamps, and glaciers. As expected, it’s held up perfectly to the elements and kept my gear inside dry.
Great in the BWCAW
My wife and I have been using 70L Patagonia Black Hole bags for over a decade. They've been to Nepal and Everest Base Camp with us; Southern Utah and the canyons of the Grand Staircase, Escalante NM; and most recently for the past 5 years, they've proven to be the perfect bag for extended canoe trips in the BWCAW. So easy to place in the kevlar canoe and portage one on front, and one on back. We love them and I highly recommend. Not completely waterproof, but you can overcome that with waterproof stuff sacks.
