Great knife for big hands
I received this knife mid October and have used it for an array of activities ranging from demolition to hunting. My hands are big and this knife is large enough for me to comfortably use with demolition gloves on. Its about 9 inches long when open and clips comfortably to any belt. I feel the orientation should be rotated 180 degrees so the tip of the knife is pointed downwards when closed but I generally keep it in one of my pockets versus my belt. Knife clip aside, this fella works well and keeps an edge when cutting rope, leather or the occasional rubber hose. The FX411 has great rib grips and is well balanced while the frame lock is what you would expect of a knife of this caliber. The ease of use, wood grain grips and overall quality makes this a knife I would recommend this to anyone.
Coast did it again !!
Just received my FX411 Knife, perfect carry weight , nice balance in hand, with finger and rib grips, nice frame lock with handsome wood handle, love the 2 position clip as I am left handed, as well as the ambidextrous thumb opening studs, everything you would expect from coast cutlery, have several knives and love them all, it won't disappoint..
Very sharp right out of the box!
This is a great knife to have around! I really like how it has some size to it, but isnt heavy. At first with its light weight I thought it might be kinda cheap and break easy, but this knife is solid and can take some hard use. I keep it on me in my hunting bag and use it for everything. It even worked good for cutting my way out of some briars. You cant beat the price, and like every coast knife Ive owned, this knife holds an edge forever! I wasnt sure about its blocky shape at first, but it makes it fit nicely in a pocket, without catching on anything. The more i use it, the more i love this knife. Another fine Coast product!
Comfortable and Solid, not the Sharpest
This knife is lighter than I expected and feels great in the hand. The wood laminate has a pleasant feel, and the grip is well shaped. I should warn that while it is not dull, the blade is not particularly sharp, so if you are looking for a precise razor, this may not be a good fit for you. For general use however, this knife is a quality option. It feels solid, and the blade opens smoothly and easily.
“Now that’s a knife”
Great folding knife, especially for the price. On par with Kershaw knives I own. The wood handle looks great and feels good to hold—I like the weight of this knife, although may be a little heavy for EDC. This could easily fillet a fish camping. Made quick work of cardboard boxes and easily cut through an old garden hose. Locks securely with good opening action. Recommended.
This knife can handle anything
The FX411 is a knife that won’t back down and can handle anything. Love the features like the 2-position clip and ambidextrous opening, which makes this a great fit for anyone to use. After showing this beast of a knife to the uncles I’ll be ordering a couple more for Christmas presents for them
Solid steel, attractive handle, and very sharp
As I write this review of the coast, folding knife, FX 411, we are camping in the central coast of California. We forgot the hotdog forks, but the knife sure came in handy to cut some branches to roast our marshmallows. The look and feel of this knife are solid which most likely account for its heavier weight. The blade is very sharp and the 4 inch blade is the perfect size for our particular needs. It fits nicely in my husband‘s pocket or in the small backpack that we use for hiking bit it seems a little heavy if you are backpacking. We did not use the two position clip but I can see how it would nicely fit on a belt. The lanyard hole made it very easy to store and find in our camper. Compared to other folding knives (that use a button to retract the blade), the frame lock is easier to use.
Good value knife for camping.
This is a fairly large folding knife. As you can see from photo it is comparable is size, when opened, to small fixed blade knife, and significantly larger than what most be would use as and everyday carry knife. At this size it would not suit most people as an everyday carry knife, or someone looking for light weight backpacking knife but it very suitable for camping. At 25$, it is also fairly inexpensive. For you knife nerd, it is a drop point blade with a swedged tip and is hollow ground. There are thumb studs on both sides of the blade for one handed opening with either hand, and jimping along the rear of the spine and the handle for better control. The scales are made of wood, and give the knife a classic look. The blade is made from 7cr17 steel which is the Chinese equivalent of 440, a fairly standard low priced knife steel. Out of the box it is reasonable sharp, and will cut through paper on edge, with some resistance. Not the sharpest knife i've ever used but perfectly functional. The one handed opening is also not as smooth as nicer knives, there is some resistance and this might be due to extra leverage needed for the large blade, but again it is functional. It locks open with a frame lock that is sturdy. I used daily for two weeks for various every day tasks, such as opening boxes, breaking down corrugated cardboard boxes, and slicing fruit. Also tested the blade with tougher tasks such as carving wood, and hacking away at some blocks of hickory. The blade withstood that abuse with no chipping, but after two weeks of use the edge had noticeable dulled. This would not be uncommon with this grade of steel. I was able to easily sharpen it to a factory edge or better though, as it's easier to get an edge on back on the softer value grade steel. Overall, this is a perfectly fine knife to use around a camp site or for every day task around the house or at work at a very good price. Its probably larger than what most people would would to carry everyday, but its a great size for tasks you would perform when camping.
Big Adventure knife
This is a big knife, for big adventures. This is a great fishing knife, or for carving your favorite walking stick. The handle fits great in your hand, and is super stylish. The blade is robust and sharp and will be perfect for fishing.
Good knife at this price point.
I had the opportunity to try out the Coast FX411 Frame Lock knife and found that it comes to hand well and has a comfortable handle. It performed well in current projects including cutting rope and twine, peeling bark off a wood stump, sharpening a stick for marshmallows. It is an attractive knife and easily opens and closes. The only detractor, which is to be expected from knives at this price point, is that while it sharpens easily, it cannot be expected to hold an edge like more expensive knives. It is on the large side and too heavy to use as a belt clip knife. This knife is more practical for a person with large hands, given the weight and handle size. I do like the advertised lifetime warranty.
