I'm very happy to see this back on REI's shelves. The candle lantern is a low-tech (no-tech?) elegant light source for your outdoor adventures. A couple strung over a picnic table or around your campsite provides you with no-glare ambient lighting perfect for evening conversation (but don't expect to be able to play cards or do dishes). In the tent, they also provide nice ambient lighting--and more, once your eyes adjust. They also, on chilly nights, add a degree or two or warmth to the tent and they really do help keep condensation at bay (but, you need to let them burn all night). The downsides: Hang them in your backpacking tent you will bang them and hot wax will spill inside the lantern (I've never had it spill out) and that is a mess to clean up. The top does get hot so you need to be careful--don't touch it or let it touch (or get near) things that will burn or melt. That said, I've used my candle lantern a lot over the last twenty years and never burned (or melted) anything. Oh, yes, these things are simple and durable. Buy one now and you, too, will likely still have it--and be using it--in twenty years. Also, candle lanterns are so retro they're hip. Finally, yes, the lantern and the candles are relatively heavy if you are backpacking. No way around that except to make your friends carry it. Pro-tip: You can find citronella-scented candles to help keep bugs away. Yes, I know citronella is highly overrated as a bug deterrent, but I've found lighting a citronella candle lantern in my tent an hour or so before i head to bed seems to make the tent less attractive to mosquitoes and over buggy things.
Simple backpacking light that reliably works
Nice to see these still for sale. I got my two for backpacking about 55 years ago. They are simple safe and reliable, have just worked without problems. I replaced one of the glass covers once a few decades ago because I dropped it on a rock. I find two give enough light to wash dishes.
Worthy of a... GLOWING review. Ha.
I just finished burning my first candle in this thing, and it was awesome. If you find yourself in the woods and lighting an entire fire isn't an option, I find this scratches that itch really well. Would recommend to a friend. My only qualm: why does REI not sell the regular candle refills? They only have the beeswax which is 3x more expensive. C'mon REI, I'm not made of wax here!
Like a lantern, but packable
I always love the warm glow of a gas lantern or candle light. When I’m backpacking or at the boundary waters, a lantern just isn’t practical. This candle will last you for an extended weekend or weeklong trip if burning just a couple of hours every night. I’ve burned it over 8 hours straight. I love using this as an alternative to a glaring LED while getting ready for bed in the tent. It gives off just enough light to see what you’re doing, and it takes a little bit of the chill off.
Useful and Aesthetic
I am sad that it took me as many seasons as it did for me to invest in this. Helpful for warming your tent a couple degrees in the cold, reduces condensation in the tent, great little light for general use around the camp. It doesn't weigh much and the beeswax candles smell awesome!
Great product exceptional price.
It arrived today. It was loaded with a candle when it arrived. I lit it and sat in candle light at my table for an hour hoping for warmer weather here in the Midwest. Well built and performed exactly how expected. Love it and the red color.
Candle lantern
this is just a very basic candle lantern that is easy to carry, easy to light, and hasn't blown out in the wind. Works fine!
love the lantern, poor packaging job
Just ordered this last week, showed up broken.. really bad job of packaging it, considering there’s glass pieces…
