Fits large
Medium fit loose/large and the drawstring only pulls tabs at front, not all way around, so cannot really be snugged up. Elastic alone would not be enough to hold them up. Returning.

Fulfillment Ctr not in tune with on-line ordering
After ordering a size L (Large) and actually receiving an XL (Extra Large) 4 different times, I have decided to go directly to the manufacturer to find another retail outlet for this item. The clerks at the store were very friendly, but each one had a different reason for why I continued to receive the wrong size, so I gave up on REI and search for the product from a different retail outlet.

Great product; Even greater price
Although I bought this product online, I thought I had these swim shorts sent to my local REI store. However, they were delivered free to my home within a few days of ordering (even better!). Since I am completely between a Medium and Large, I ordered the Large sized. They fit perfectly, though if surfing in large, crashing waves....they might be pulled off! Doesn't matter, I love them.

These trunks are very soft and comfortable. They fit just as expected and stretch in all the right places. The pockets will be helpful, including the small key pocket inside the wasteband.

No draw string

Quality is very good. Shorts are very soft and elastic. I have a 32 waist and the medium is too big so am returning for a small.

Good fit
