The best tent!!! 6+ nights and counting... This review is for the 2023 redesign of the Bunkhouse. The design team at Big Agnes hit this one outta the park! I can tell a lot of time and effort was spent designing this tent. Yes, it is pricey, but you get what you pay for. Quality, craftsmanship, and functionality makes this tent worth every penny. From the high quality aluminum stakes to the storage backpack/bag, you definitely get your money's worth. We camp 20+ nights a year around the PNW and our favorite tent has been the MSR Hubba Hubba 2 person backpacking tent, but the Bunkhouse takes the gold for car camping! Very similar setup as the Hubba Hubba. It's like an oversized version of the Hubba Hubba. Setup is super easy! Only takes 3-5 min. There are only 2 sets of poles (main frame and front vestibule). I've tested out other popular tents in the market such as the North Face Wawona, MSR Habitude, REI Wonderland, but they lacked some features and functionality. In my opinion, if the Wawona, Habitude, and Wonderland tents had a baby, you get the Big Agnes Bunkhouse! ;) Summer here in the PNW has been friendly to us so far, so we have not been able to test this in the rain/wind, but 100% confident it'll do fine due to the quality fabric and the multiple guy lines attached to the tent and fly. The large vestibule will allow us to take cover when it rains, store gear, cook, midnight restroom breaks etc.. WHY DO I THINK IT'S PERFECT (for us)? -Has 2 vestibules! 1 large and 1 medium size. We use the large front vestibule as a garage/front porch/dining area in the event it rains. Also good for bike storage at night. The medium rear vestibule is used as our restroom (bucket w/sani bags). -Tent height is 72", which allows me to stand straight up in the tent. I'm 5'9. The walls run near vertical allowing more space for cots. -Setup is a breeze! Connect the poles, clip in the tent, and stake out the guy lines. Done. 5min to setup/teardown. Exact setup as the MSR Hubba Hubba -Standalone rainfly allows us to use it as a shade canopy at the beach/4th of July at the park. -When the weather heats up the front vestibule is customizable, allowing the user to use it as a canopy (you'll need 2 trekking/tarp poles). -Around 12 interior storage pockets for organization -Various clips around the tent for gear storage and customizing the doors/windows. The front entrance has a quick clip attachment to secure the door off to the side when entering/exiting frequently -Tent size 92”x90” allows us to continue camping in some of our favorite spots within Mount Rainier Nat'l park. A lot of sites limit tents to only 8'x8'. -Lastly, quality and craftsmanship of materials. Tent stakes are high quality lightweight aluminum and the storage back is a backpack style. You will LOVE this tent!
Let’s be honest here folks. Big Agnes did a poor job engineering this tent. Its pole design leaves it structurally unstable and dependent on the tent skin being clipped into place for stability. I’d say the previous version did a better job with their pole design. Out of all the tents I own (big Agnes a majority of them) this tent is one I do not look forward to setting up. I think Big Agnes got a little lazy with this one and I wouldn’t recommend purchasing it even at this discounted price. Trust me on this one. I wish I had read this review before purchasing.
Just spend a week in this tent in northern coastal Maine. Everything from 85 degree sunny, hot, humid days, to downpours and several 55-degree nights and a constant heavy, wet fog 24/7 that permeates everything. Pros- This tent kept me rain-dry, held up in wind, attractive colors and architecture, and was obviously constructed from high-quality materials.. fabric, poles, and zippers all feel heavy duty. Cons: This tent is HOT and does not breathe at all with the rain fly on. I wanted a tent with coverable screens on the doors on both side of the tent. Sadly, the screens on the 2023 Bunk House are tiny and barely 1/3 the size of the entire door. Makes no sense why they couldn't have made the screen and covering panel 1/2 or preferably 3/4 the size of the entire door. Very poor air circulation even with both 1/3 size screens open. There are no pop-up vents at all on the rainfly. If it's raining, you're technically dry from overhead, but it's so humid that all your bedding, clothes, food, etc.. are soggy and you're sweating. Also the lightweight aluminum stakes are garbage and barely hold anything. Next generation, this tent needs much larger screens on the doors.
This tent is extremely thoughtfully designed. There is an excellent design language around “roll up” points that I’ve never experienced before: literally every flap can be rolled up and pinned to the tent. Once you notice one roll up point you see them all throughout the tent. The tent fabric appears durable and the zippers are nice yyk zippers. They’re not the beefiest zippers but I think they’ll last for a while. I had no trouble setting it up. I believe the solo setup process has been made WAY easier by the hooks introduced in V2 (rather than sleeves as was previously). The pictured “awning stakes” do not come with the tent. Uncovered, the tent has full view of the sky which is rare.
High quality materials, easy to set-up and great to be able to stand up inside the tent thanks to the high walls.
