Great Gift!
I bought this as a gift for my brother, and he has appeared to really like it. I did take into consideration the review from 5 months ago about the shoulder strap, so as a precaution I also sent him a sling.
Multi-Function
This is a great pack for laptop carry. There is plenty of padding in the sleeve and lots of pocket options for the other small things you need on a daily basis. I like being able to switch from a shoulder strap to the backpack straps, but also having the two hand carry straps is a thoughtful addition too. I also like that it stands on it's own when you set it on the ground. This makes for easy access and you don't have to zip it shut all the time. With no computer, I don't carry this bag just because it has a ton of padding and feels bulky otherwise. I'll be trimming the backpack straps down, they are a bit excessive for me, but that's the only change I'd recommend.
Fantastic laptop bag
Bought it a few weeks ago and currently travelling and remote working in Europe. This bag takes in my laptop, my second portable screen, all the adaptors and cables, note books, books e-reader and so on. Using it as a personal item in the plane, so depending on the plane companies I have to empty it a little, but no issue with Air Canada. Overall great quality, and being able to put it as a bag on your back is great. But as some mentionned, some "grip" or "cushion" are missing on the shoulder strap and makes for an easy slide if you have other bags with you, so carefull with that. But this is a great bag, happy that I got it on discount though... would never have bought it full price...
So far, so great!
I saw some coworkers in BC Wildfire with this laptop bag and decided to purchase one for myself. I am so far very pleased with the bag! All the stuff that was normally yard-saled across the front seat of my truck I can now organize in one compact space. Laptop, maps, GPS, Kestrel, notebooks, pens, keys, wallets, phones, radios, chargers, etc. all have a spot. The quality and durability is what I expect from Mystery Ranch, and while I understand the complaints others have about the shoulder strap, it doesn't bother me as I'm not traveling long distances with the bag on my shoulder.
Great EDC for a Professor
The little concerns I have for the Mystery Ranch 3 Way Expandable Brief Case is all addressed in the new edition (2023). It’s a perfect EDC for me as a professor with a lot international travel. Have a lot of organizations to keep valuable items, those meant for easy access, secure and safe place for laptop and iPad, enough room for files to review while on the move, additional room for a light jacket, luggage pass-through, and to sum it up, several different modes of carry - just perfect for my daily life. Additionally, the build quality is amazingly excellent.
18 Expandable Briefcase - Impressive!
Some history…I’m early 60’s and any job I have had, whether it be in the hospitality industry, commercial estate or any other, a brief case or backpack was needed….so I have used many over the years, most name brands, and I thought well built. This MR backpack/briefcase is by far the most well designed and well built backpack/briefcase I have had..bar none. I carry a laptop, extra screen, all the power/cables needed plus 3 or more 1” thick files. A lot of —-! Not a problem for this bag, and I have not had to use the ‘expand’ feature. I highly recommend!
Amazing design just a few gripes
I bought this a few years ago and used it for a service mission for my church and now as a school laptop bag for college. It's held up amazingly and still kicking. It's designed well with plenty of organization and the 3 way zip is a dream to use. The ability to unzip more room to over stuff if you need to pack a jacket is very useful too. My one problem is that it's super easy to over pack and really weigh it down which makes using the shoulder strap incredibly uncomfortable with it's zero padding. I ended up stealing the padding off an Osprey duffel just to ease the load. I could just turn it into a backpack but then all the stuff I organize in the 3 way pocket spills into the bag and makes a mess. If it has a more thought out shoulder strap it would be a 10/10
Love this bag, there's just one thing.....
I recently purchased and used this bag as a carry-on on an international trip. It was the perfect size for a change of clothes and meds... Two days of delays and no luggage made this bag critical while I waited. Tons of room and compartments, it is very well made and thought out. My ONLY drawback is the shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is very uncomfortable, and its unique attachment points makes it difficult to replace. If the shoulder strap matched the quality of the bag, this would be an easy 5 stars.
Great Lightweight Commuter Bag
I needed a lightweight messenger bag for work and travel, and the fact that this one could be converted into a backpack was a huge plus. It's about half the weight of the Swiss Army backpack I was using earlier, with a nifty high-tech quick clasp and waterproof zippers, so it's perfect for what I need. Great color, as shown. The only downsides I note is that it's a tight squeeze to fit my 15.6" laptop (but it does fit) and there are no easy access pen or phone pockets (but several square-ish interior pockets).
Solid pack
I use the pack to and from the office and in the field. Its a solid bag I bought a mole panel for the inside compartment for a bottle holder and a few more pockets. It should be built with those features. The strap is crappy, they make a great padded strap for the other shoulder bags. I even called to try to buy one separately and they wouldn't budge. The front closure is neat but the novelty of a buckle and 2 zippers wears off pretty quickly. Overall its a quality item that I know will last a long time.
