Simple and Sustainable re-useable filter!
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I'm sort of a coffee nerd and have used most of what's out there for fussy coffee-making techniques, including the original Aeropress and now the Aeropress Go. Either version combined with this reuseable filter makes coffee making outdoors simple, durable, inexpensive, sustainable, and ensures a great cup. I've had a lot of fun tinkering with this and learning how to make great coffee from it using different traditional and inverted recipes. The one drawback to using this filter I've seen is that is tends to allow coffee to drip down out of the filter during the brew at a high rate - even when I used a super fine espresso grind - resulting in thin, sour, underextracted coffee. That's greatly mitigated by using one of thousands of enthusiast recipes one can find online or by pairing this filter with the Aeropress flow control cap. The Aeropress enthusiast community has long been experimenting with 'inverted' recipes which serve to keep coffee from draining out of the device before the coffee has had a chance to properly extract, and I wholeheartedly agree that the inverted method is the way to go to get the best full-bodied cup of coffee out of any Aeropress (especially if you're using the reuseable filter). The method is basically to pre-set the plunger and chamber together and turn them upside down, then put grounds and water in and screw the cap on. After about 4 minutes (varies by technique), flip the aeropress up onto your cup and press to push your coffee out. I was also able to review the flow control filter cap - which mimics the inverted method without inverting the Aeropress - and that's a great addition to the system since it holds your brewing coffee in until you push down on the plunger. Using this reuseable filter with the flow control cap is in my opinion the best combination of accessories for the Go since it simplifies the process while still yielding a great cup! This filter is great because it's sustainable and ensures you won't run out of paper filters during your extended trips!
Nice if you prefer the re-usable option
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a nice addition for people that prefer it. I have friends that prefer this vs using the white, disposable filters. Both from an environmental stand point and simple preference. Personally, I like the paper filters more. I think they filter better and make cleaning up easy. However, it's nice to keep one of these with the Go Travel Coffee Press, in case you run out of the paper filters.
Take the coffee shop with you on the trail
The aeropress reusable metal filter adds versatility to the standard aeropress. When used with the flow control filter cap, you can steep the grounds as long as you want. Steeping for about two minutes creates a strong, full-bodied cup of coffee, similar to a French press. Steeping for about three minutes creates a smoother tasting cup. Also, the metal filter creates a nice crema because of the chemical with the metal, I guess? I like that it is reusable as well! Very easy to clean. Note: this can NOT be used with the normal filter cap that comes standard with aeropress. The water will pass right through it!
Great coffee-- no paper filter waste
I used this filter with the Aeropress Go Travel Coffee press and its a great lightweight substitution for the paper filters. Made great coffee-- no grains getting through this filter-- and best of all no paper waste!! I brought it with me camping and it was easy to rinse off to reuse. It's rigid and sturdy so no fear of it bending and fits perfectly.
A somewhat disappointing addition to the AeroPress
When the AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press (a terrific product btw, go check out my review on that) was sent to me by REI Trailblaizers for review, the reusable stainless steel filter was also sent for testing. Unlike the press itself, which I LOVED, this filter was weighed, measured and found to be lacking. On the positive side of things, I do like the re-useable factor of this. Anytime you are on the trail, disposable items are problematic. You need to pack it out (and if you aren't packing out your trash, shame on you!) So this has the advantage over the paper filter as rinse and reuse instead of single use and trash. Out of the package, it looked great, lightweight, filter holes looked fine. Appeared to be a high quality, well manufactured product. However when this filter had to put on the cleats and take the field, it just couldn't perform. When used by itself with the AeroPress Go, it didn't slow down the water. At all. It dripped through the filter pretty much as fast as I could pour the water. I never reached the fill line, couldn't stir it (because the water was already in the cup) and never got to use the press because all the water was already in the cup. The result was a very weak, gritty cup of something loosely resembled coffee. I tried again flipping the filter over, same result. It works well if used with a paper filter as well, but that pretty much defeats the purpose. I'd say where it did perform well was when I used it with the AeroPress Flow Control Cap. The control cap kept the water in the press tube until the plunger pushed the water through the grounds and the filter. The steel filter did keep the grounds out of the coffee in this configuration. So I would recommend it only if you plan on using the flow control cap (which I recommend, it makes good coffee great). Otherwise, skip this and use the paper filters.
Reusable filter
The additional filter seems perfectly fine and did its job wonderfully. I am not sure how it could be bad as it is an insert to use instead of the disposable paper filters. Easy to clean. Only draw might be how thin it is and you could bend easily. Otherwise perfectly fine and does its job.
Didn't work
Didn't work. No matter what grind size I tried, this thing just dropped the water straight through into the cup, barely pausing to extract anything from the coffee. Allowed a lot of silt into the cup. Unless you're using your Aeropress inverted I don't see how to get this silly thing to function as a proper filter in the prescribed manner. I reached the end of how long I'm willing to futz with a gadget to get decent results and I'll be returning it. Wanted to reduce waste, but I'll stick with the papers until they get this thing refined because it's not ready for prime time yet.
Another great product by Aeropress
I have been using the Aeropress metal filter every morning for a few weeks now. It seems like it will last for the life of the Aeropress itself. That will eliminate the need to buy paper filters, the associated waste from them. The taste of the coffee made using this has a little bit of fine sediment, like French press style, but not as much. I tend to still favor the taste of the coffee made with the paper filters but I am glad I bought this so I always have a filter in all circumstances. It is especially good for the Aeropress Go, since you can get ground coffee when traveling but finding refills for the paper filters might be harder.
Long lasting option. Takes some getting used to.
I re-use the paper filters, but I wanted a long-term reusable alternative. On a personal level, I also find it annoying when the coffee grounds stick to the paper during clean up. Not a big deal, but it's a little tedious to deal with when you're in the back woods and trying to minimize cleaning effort. This metal filter definitely gets the job done, and cleanup is a breeze. There's a small difference in taste, but the biggest difference is the water flow. The paper filters are much finer, so they restrict water flow more. I found that it was a great quality of life improvement to use this filter in combination with the Flow Control cap that Aeropress sells.
Reliable, sturdy
It's hard to write a lot about a simple product - but this filter works exactly as intended. It cleans easily and does not show any signs of wear and tear despite considerable use over about a year. Everything you'd want in a reusable filter like this
