A much needed upgrade - thank you
A much needed upgrade. I owned the previous version of the Venta Mitten in XL. I have bigger hands, almost always an XL or XXL, size EU11. The fit of the previous Venta - I've owned for two years - was just okay... and when I wore an Arc'teryx Gothic glove (merio wool) it didn't allow for much space to breathe. PROS I hike, run, and camp in all seasons, all temps. The new Venta has a plusher inside, and the XXL allows for a Gothic glove liner. Just this past weekend it was -30ºC on my trail hike up Prairie Mountain. -40ºC once I was out of the trees and in the wind. The Venta's performance great. On it's own, without a liner, I've ran in -20º temps without issue. Despite being a mitten, I've found I still have enough dexterity in movement; using zippers, buckling/unbuckling pack straps, drinking water, operating my Garmin inReach, etc. About the only thing it can't do is use my iPhone's camera features... which is okay. The base of the new Venta comes with a bigger loop so that it's easier to pull on the mitten. CONS I wouldn't describe the Venta mittens as "water proof". As much as I apprecate the GoreTex shell, water seeps in through the seams when running in rain.
Best mitts ever!!
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) These are the best mitts I’ve owned. They lightweight, warm, and wind proof. They are also small enough that I can put them in a pocket when I don’t need them. I highly recommend this product.
Barely Water Resistant!
Bought these for rainy dog walks around the Pacific Northwest. Didn’t get them online, just grabbed them in the store when I saw they were thin (so not very warm, which is what I wanted) and Gortex. They are not waterproof as I had hoped, but I see in the description that they do not say they are. I just made an assumption when I saw they were Gortex. Arcteryx has some Infinium Gortex products that are water resistant not waterproof so be aware! I would not by Infinium gortex ever again: it barely repels water. Def better for mild snowy conditions. If I wear these on a typical Vancouver rainy day, my hands are wet after 10mins. I would not have bought them had I read the description. They would be great though for cross country skiing! Lightweight, not hot, break the wind! Wish they would make a pair just like this that are proper Gortex and waterproof!
Functional and stylish mitt for active use
I’ve been ising the updated Venta mitten for about a month now. This is a good update on an already good product, but there is a few issues. They seem warmer than the previous model, and they fit really good. The extra «fold» in the palm is hard to get used to and I find it «irritating» on longer runs and when using poles. Since these are used in colder conditions they could really need a softer «nosewipe» area ;)
Keep your hands dry.
The mittens are okay. It seems the sizing is a bit off. Going by the size guide. I was between an Xsmall-small. I think a medium would have been better, at least then I could wear gloves underneath. They’re good for wearing out in the rain when it’s above 40 but below 40, my hands get cold. Also, it says they can be used with touchscreens. I haven’t found that to be true. I wouldn’t buy them again.
Same great mittens, more durable cuffs!
These are the perfect lightweight mittens for high-output activity like winter running and cross-country skiing. This is a very specific niche (breathable, lightweight shell mitten with almost no insulation), and we have yet to find anything better than the Venta. Between my wife and I, we have owned five pairs of these, with this pair being our sixth. Layered over a thin pair or merino liner gloves, these are perfect down to 10 degrees F or colder if you are working hard. The downside of the previous versions of these gloves was the flimsy cuffs, which easily tore at the seams with heavy use, especially when pulling them on over liner gloves in the cold. This new pair is our first of the newly revised model, and they seem to have made major structural improvements to the cuff area. It's too soon to say, but I'm very optimistic that Arcteryx has fixed the only flaw of the Venta mitten.
Perfect for nordic skiing between 10-25F
I now have four pair of the first iteration. They are wind and water proof and provide more than adequate warmth for high output winter sports. On my older mittens I reinforced the stitching along the palmar edge. I think this revised version will correct the defect of the weak stitching of the pull tab. I know of no other manufacturer who makes a similar product.
I love mittens…
I bought additional pairs as I have a habit of losing mitts… I wear them often for XC skiing, winter hiking and even warmer downhill days. I can wear with a thin fleece liner for additional warmth. They work great, good size and keep my Poor sensitive hands comfortable on active days. Wore them in a slushy rainy day and kept my hands dry and warm.
Lightweight and convenient
Bought these for winter running, but they're so convenient that I'm using them for everything. They block wind very effectively and add a bit of warmth as well. Meanwhile they're lightweight and nimble, easy to stash in a pocket. True to size, but if you're planning on layering a pair of gloves underneath you might consider going up a size.
Great gloves for backpacking.
Arc'teryx makes good stuff, the Venta mittens are no exception. I usually wear mine over other possum down gloves when it gets under 30 degrees and windy. They are very warm by themselves. Every bit as warm as possum down gloves but windproof and highly water resistant. The weight is dead on at 2.1 oz.
