Soft Spun Polyester
A great winter baselayer with a relatively smooth exterior & a soft spun porous mesh fleece interior. It has the look of small perforations from the outside making it somewhat translucent, but not see through. The men's medium comes in at 114g. For comparison, my alternate merino base layer is 200g. It's very soft on the inside & feels similar to a super-fine or fine grade merino wool. It doesn't feel very wet when sweaty & dries very quickly from body heat. The thumb loops are a nice touch.
Love it!
Lightest shirt I own, especially for it being a long sleeve. It’s lighter than my t-shirts. Its lightness is kind of weird at first actually. On its own it almost feels like you’re not wearing anything at all. Just a feeling of soft fuzziness on your skin. It’s sensational. The warmth factor I’m not so sure of. Yes, it is warm. But when I layer it underneath, for example, the MicroChill fleece jacket, overall I’m less toasty than if I’m wearing the MicroChill on bare skin. But the MicroChill jacket is made of a nice fleece material that is comfortable on the skin on its own. If I wanted a lightweight base layer for, say, the Ghost Shadow Hoody synthetic down jacket, it’s an excellent pairing.
Insane Comfort
Love this shirt. Wear it all the time and have already ordered another one - so comfortable. If they eventually make a short sleeved version I'll buy that, too. It's a great base layer and good for cool/cold weather chillin'. Be aware that there is zero wind blocking - it's a mesh fabric - you must have a shell if you're hiking/skiing/walking to mailbox. That said - I've hiked in 15-20F with wind and just this base and a heavy shell no problem. Note: It's very "roomy". Great for me, but if you're a bean pole you may be swimming in it - think about that when selecting sizes.
Amazing Material - Lofty, Lightweight, and Very Warm.
Extremely unique material. Very lightweight, especially for its volume/loft. It lets air through very easily, so it's certainly going to be a base layer for most situations, but around the house it's wild to feel how airy AND warm it is at the same time. I used it under a dry suit for whitewater kayaking, and the material started feeling scratchy after a while. However, my pfd does squeeze my tops very tight to my skin, and my wife didn't experience using it under her pfd and dry suit, so ymmv. I'm normally between a small and a medium, and in this case I had to go with a medium because the small was too short in the arms and too tight in the armpits. The medium is better there, but too wide in the body for my liking (but I'm skinny and tall).
Almost awesome
The AirMesh crew does what I wanted: Keeps me reasonably warm while providing some ventilation. It has about the same wind-resistance as Alpha 120 fabric, and a little more than Alpha 60 or 90. I only wish it had some anti-stink treatment (or maybe merino-blend panels under the arms?) To be fair, it’s no worse in this regard than any other polyester shirt or insulating layer (e.g., Alpha). It is just opaque enough that to spare you embarrassment at the post-hike pub. I’m normally a small but the medium fits well, although not skin-tight.
A Great Long Sleeve Shirt for Working Out
Bought this shirt to take out for hikes on trips. Little bit for sunscreen and for cooling. I tested this out hiking a few short and then a long hike in White Sands National Park. A concern of mine was not getting hot. Well, temps were in the mid 80s but quite a bit of radiant heat. Didn't overheat and found this dried out rather quickly after finishing the hike. Just wish this came in other colors than the few it has.
Feels great, performs great, doesn’t smell so great.
Almost perfect… I love the performance of this layer, he feel is fantastic, just one issue; it gets really stinky. Not the end of the world but this is definitely a wear once and wash IMMEDIATELY shirt. Do not bring this on a multi day trip if you want people to stand near you. Other than that, it’s great! One of my favorite picks to throw on under a vest for a ski tour.
Very unique fabric. Works as a base layer should.
Reviewing this from the POV of an end user & tech fabric geek. Love the materials of the MH AirMesh. Already have the hoody; just bought the crew. Agree w/ those who say it's very warm when at standstill or w/ a wind layer over top, yet while moving or with wind and no wind layer it's like being naked. To me that says the fabric is functioning precisely how a base layer shoulder. Only con is hypothetical: delicate fabric. I've had no issues with snags, pilling, abrasion, etc. But I wouldn't be surprised were I to, given the softness of the fibers and the openness of the fabric they're arranged into. Cut/fit are unremarkable w/ exception of the somewhat high neck hole and the different accent fabric used there. Packs tiny, resilient fibers bounce back into shape immediately. Most comparable to the Patagonia Cap Air wool base layer, minus the itchiness/roughness and the ultra premium price point. Also, like Polartec Power Stretch pro, but much lighter and more airy fabric, fwiw.
Best way to start your hike.
Great base layer with a unique fabric that provides a very surprisingly high level of warmth and breathability. This is the perfect layer for slightly chilly hikes in the alpine in the summer and also a perfect layer to start your layering system on winter hikes.
One dimensional and not very practical
The sleeves are shorter than normal MH tops. This is totally a base layer and really can’t be worn on its own. It is like an old school football jersey material with holes and a fuzzy lining. So it can only be used for one thing and not serve multiple purposes.
