I wear this jacket year round - it's awesome
This is my third Arcteryx Atom jacket that I've owned - it's really that great. This jacket was formerly known as the Atom LT, and only recently was it renamed just the Atom. Compared to the ones I've had in the past, the fabric and fit are identical. I really like this new Pytheus color with the turquoise trim - it goes with almost anything. I use this piece from everything to casual around-town wear, to climbing, and it works especially well as a breathable insulation layer when resort or backcountry skiing. For casual use, I'd say it's comfortable to around 35-40F for me unless I'm being active, and then it's ok down to any usual temperatures I'd encounter in the northwest where I live. I'm 5'6" and 175 lbs, with a 32 inch waist. I like my jackets fitted, and this one is perfect for me with room for a baselayer underneath. I often have issues finding shirts or jackets that are the right length (most are too long) but that's not the case here. I included some photos that highlight some nice details on this jacket. The side pockets are a good size for putting your hands in to keep warm if you're not wearing gloves. I think there is a subtle change in fabric from previous Atoms - before, it felt more like a light fleece fabric and now it's a face fabric (the same as all the other turquoise trim). These pockets have zippers, hidden behind flaps, that gives it a streamlined look. The hood fits over my ski helmet and has a single cinch cord with a trigger for adjustment. There's an interior chest pocket that's big enough for the biggest smartphones. The wrist elastic is well designed (haven't had issues with it losing elasticity on my past Atoms and I'd expect the same here) and it's not too hard to pull it up over my watch when I want to look at it. The front zipper has a flap on the inside to help make it less drafty. Finally, the Arcteryx logo on the front is now stitched (I've had an older jacket where the logo was printed). It's a nice detail. Overall, and awesome and versatile piece that I've been really happy with. The only reason I've owned more than one is because I lost one in the past, and this particular one was sent to me free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.
Perfectly Versatile
I've used my Atom hoodie for long walks, biking in 40 degree weather in Michigan, and just casually to and from the grocery store. What I am impressed most by is the versatility. It is breathable, looks good, and keeps me warm in the Michigan fall time. I've worn this as a standalone, as well as under a rain shell, and it has performed superbly! I'm 5'9, 140lbs and the small is a perfect fit. The sleeves are a perfect length, and the hood cinch works really well. At first impression, I thought the hood was way too big, but once you use the cinch it is excellent. The Pytheus color is awesome, and I've gotten compliments on it. I'm impressed, and I know I am going to be wearing this hoodie for a long, long time.
A simple, well-designed light jacket
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a very well thought out piece of gear. It also seems to be well constructed, though time will tell on that point. Befitting its name, the Atom jacket is VERY lightweight. However, it has surprisingly strong insulating properties, especially if the wearer is warming themselves up via physical activity. That's probably the sweet spot for this item, but it also performs well just as something to keep warm when walking around town in temps from, say, 60 F/15 C to 25 F/ -4 C. Note that the fit is fairly snug. It's not skintight or anything, but it won't accommodate all body types. There's a stretchy panel along the sides of the torso that provides some flexibility on the fit, but it would be uncomfortable to wear if that panel was constantly stretched all the way. One thing this jacket does extremely well is move with the wearer. The aforementioned panel prevents the jacket from twisting around too much, while the rest of the material is slick enough to cooperate with whatever other layers may be moving around. The elastic in the wrists feels just right, both in strength and size. It also does a great job of keeping out water and wind. Most of the material feels windproof, and the side-panels keep the jacket so close to the body that wind isn't really a factor there. The jacket is probably designed to be worn as an outermost layer, but I could see it doing well as a mid-layer if the precipitation was especially heavy. Thankfully, the hood IS large enough to cover a climbing or biking helmet. None of the (potential) negatives were enough to make me take off a star. First, there's the color of the lining. For me, the blue of the Pytheas model was a bit too vivid/bright for my tastes. It catches the eye in a way I'd prefer it didn't for the kinds of things I wear around town (I couldn't care less about the color when I'm off in the woods). Secondly, there's the zipper pull. It's possible that Arc'teryx has made something even better (lighter, more durable) than what I'm used to, but I just don't trust this little plastic tab quite yet. Finally, there aren't any pit zips. The jacket does breathe extremely well, and I understand that the side panels make pit zips impossible, but I'm probably going to grab something else on relatively warm days. If you don't already have a technical lightweight jacket or you're in the market for an upgrade, I'd strongly suggest checking the Atom out. Other than baselayers, I've never had a shirt or jacket move so well.
Storm hood, interior zip, versatile cuffs
Fantastic layering/ insulator, thin down but good at retaining heat, wish it was abit more waterproof as water can be absorbed, never seeps through though.
Inaccurate Pricing - Tag Indicates $260
The jacket itself is fantastic and incredibly comfortable; however, it's important to note some concerning pricing practices by REI that undeniably affect the overall experience. Despite a $300 charge, the jacket arrived with a price tag of $260, suggesting it might be last season's merchandise. I purchased multiple jackets, yet REI's customer service declined to offer any price adjustment.
Incredible Jacket But…
The Atom Hoody checks every box for a perfect jacket, except for one major design flaw. I had the jacket replaced 3 times in hopes that I was just unlucky, but it’s a consistent issue. The left sleeve cuff has a problem in the seam where it digs into your skin, as shown in the picture below. The design not only has this problem but compared to the proton cuff it seems less durable in terms of tightness, shape. Otherwise it’s a fantastic product that’ll impress you with its warmth to weight ratio and performance. I really want to love this jacket but I hate that my left wrist always has the seam lip digging in my skin.
All around great buy!
Great jacket! Warm when you need it and cool when it get hot
Lightweight greatness!!
One of the best mid layers I own for super cold weather and perfect on its own for spring/ autumn days out in the wild, I am a professional wildlife photographer and this versatile hoodie one stays with me all year round.
Bad quality product
I bought the Atom hoody on Jan 2024 primarily for daily use. However, the fabric quality has degraded since then. For the amount paid, the product quality is bad.
Hello Sayuj, we are sorry to hear that the face fabric of your Atom Hoody has degraded quickly. We can see that you have already submitted a Product Service Request for this matter, our after-sale team is working on your case. We appreciate your honest feedback.
Terrible product
Major disappointment! My son wore this jacket one time and it ripped in the middle of the chest. I contacted Arc’teryx and they told me all they would do is send me TAPE! Horrible quality and customer service for a $350 jacket! Don’t buy if you are looking for quality or durability!
