Warm, Comfortable Jacket for Active Lifestyles
Living in Northern Colorado the past three years has required me to make quite a few additions to my winter wardrobe and to dress accordingly to rapidly changing weather conditions! REI has been my shopping buddy along the way and when the opportunity arose to try the Arc'teryx, Kyanite Jacket out and to write this product review for REI Trailblazers, I jumped on it! The day I received this in the mail I put it on immediately to check the fit. I'm not a large man and the medium fit my 145lb 5'7" frame perfectly. It's plenty long enough that it would most likely fit a taller person with a similar build. Good body length, sits just below my hips, room in the shoulders for one or two light/medium weight base layers and sleeves that are a little longer than my arms but cuffs keep them away from my hands. It's certainly not baggy and pretty trim fitting and flattering (according to my spouse)! As I was checking out the fit I noticed (right away) that the garment felt quite warm inside the house and I was excited about trying it in colder weather outdoors. The fabric feels sturdy yet the fleece inside is soft to the touch and is breathable. Today, we left the house early to give it a go on the Backbone's trails around 7AM. It's been a mild fall so far and we have yet to have our first real freeze but it was cold enough to get an idea of what to expect later this winter. I wore a single, short sleeved, lightweight base layer underneath the jacket and a wool cap and gloves to keep from losing any heat. Temps were in the upper 30's. Just walking casually, I was perfectly warm and comfy. As I started to hike in earnest on the trails it remained comfortable even as I began to work up a sweat. I wasn't hot mind you, but did unzip about 1/3 of the way down. Stayed like that the entire hike. Zippered pockets are a nice touch as well and roomy enough to stowaway a cell, car keys and gloves and wool cap if I get too warm. Collar comes up to just under my chin but is very soft and comfortable and protects from wind! I am going to give the jacket a lot of use this winter and into spring as my "go to" with either a light or medium weight base layer or add a shell over the top in wet or snowy weather. This is a jacket that provides a lot of warmth and comfort but it is not heavy or bulky and ideal for active winter lifestyles!
Great jacket. It looks nice. It feels great.
I received the jacket a few weeks ago. Out of the box it was soft and vibrant. It's what I would consider an active color rather than one that will fade into the background. While green won't make you stand out, you won't be able to hide. I've had the opportunity to use this in mild fall temps in MN ranging from 40-60 degrees. Around the house, in the office at work, and outside around the neighborhood running around with my kids, and local parks playing disc golf in the woods. I found that despite the cool temps, the jacket kept me much warmer than I expected. It isn't a heavy fleece jacket, but brings plenty of cozy comfort. I did worry about going off trail and through brush/branches but the material handled it all very well with no snags or other issues. It breaths well enough to handle activities outside without getting sweaty, and to be used as a top layer over a dress shirt in the office without overheating. I did get the chance to run the jacket through the wash a couple times (cold, air dry) and noticed no change in performance, fit, or appearance. In terms of fit, I'm 6'2", 185lbs. Tall and thin. The large was long enough for both my arms and my torso, though only just. Across the chest and waist it was a bit more roomy than I'd prefer, but it didn't feel baggy in the way other jackets can. I was able to play sports and run around without ever being limited in my movements. It is more of an athletic cut, with higher armpits and a tapered waist which helps the fit in my eyes. Bottom line, I think this is a great jacket. It looks nice. It feels great. And it performs above my expectations.
A Practical Mid-layer or Light Spring/Fall Jacket
I took this jacket hiking in the San Juans and appreciated its layering potential for fall and spring. The color is an awesome and very deep shade of green - something very exceptional. The design and cut makes for a trim look, but the stretchiness of the fabric presents a comfortable fit. The pockets are more for style than function. For hiking, I tend to prefer something with a hood, especially when facing unpredictable weather. I expect to wear this more around town, with chest waders in cool weather, and under a shell during ski season.
Great Mid Layer or Fall Jacket
Perfect mid layer or by itself on a fall day in the 40s. The color is far better than what was expected from online photos. The green goes great with jeans and hiking pants or can be used for a casual day at the office with a pair of khakis. The fleece material is soft and light yet insulating and still protects well from the wind. Fit and Finish While just a basic mid layer with two pockets the fit and finish are great. Love how the sleeves have a nice stretch to fit over underlayers and while wearing a watch without being too snug. The neck zips all the way up to keep out the wind but does also rubs against my chin a bit. I do have a coue concerns and one complaint. Time will tell how well the fleece will hold up against wear while wearing a backpack and the elastic for the wrist is thin and longevity is a concern. My one dislike are the zipper pulls. Both pockets and main zip are really small. Would be harder to use with gloves but this is just my personal opinion. Overall, happy with the jacket and will primarily use it for cool days that don’t require a heavy coat.
Now I have 5 of them!
I bought a Kyanite jacket on a whim up in Sun Valley Idaho a few years ago - not expecting much. Just something to take the chill out the snowy air. I've never really liked wearing jackets - either they're too hot or not warm enough, but THIS... SOMEHOW bridged the gap. I found myself wearing it ALL THE TIME. I didn't overheat, like usual. I didn't feel wind seep through it. I never had to take it off. It's amazing. The only problem is, since I was wearing it all the time, I found the excuse of needing to buy every color I could find. haha
Quality and fit are much worse
I've been a long time fan of Arcteryx products and have 2 Kyanite jackets which went with me on trips around the world. The old Kyanite jackets are incredibly durable and versatile. I bought the new Kyanite jacket in 2023. The fit and quality has changed for the worse. As many have mentioned, the fit is now for a much bigger person and you feel like you're swimming in the jacket. What's worse is that the quality has gone way downhill. I've not worn the jacket too much, and it's already piling around the sleeves. I will no longer buy Arcteryx products.
Poor quality - don't waste your money
I bought this jacket 1 month ago as a go to fleece when dog walking/hiking. It's well fitted and comfortable however the material started to pile after a couple of outings. There is considerable pilling on the sleeves and neck which make this jacket really unappealing in appearance and cheap looking. It's a real shame as I own multiple arcteryx products but due to the poor quality of this product I will be looking elsewhere in future. Poor quality and I would expect better for the price. Don't waste your money!
Hi there, we are sorry to hear about the pilling that you are experiencing with your Kyanite Jacket. We appreciate your feedback and will pass this along to our design team for review. We recommend completing a Product Service Request form and one of our representatives will see if we can help you in any way. https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/help/product-service/service-request
Great Product- Pocket Deleted
This is a replacement for a 5 year old Kyanite jacket. The old jacket sleeves were longer and have stretched over time such that I need to roll up the sleeves. Original was a Large but replacement is Medium. (For reference, my sleeve length is 35” in a dress shirt.) The new Kyanite is well made, nice slim fit and sleeves on medium fit properly. One omission on current product is elimination of a chest pocket. Old jacket had a nice interior pocket located high on the left side just inside the main zipper. Perfect for glasses or sun block ect. Obvious cost cutting.
Great Jacket with Poor Pocket Zipper Pulls
Overall I like this Jacket but rate it lower because of the pocket zippers. This is an expensive item pf outdoor clothing offered by a premier company. The pocket zipper pulls are tiny. They would be difficult to manipulate with cold fingers or gloved hands. The pulls lack a hole for attaching a pull cord. I would expect much better of Arc’teryx than this. It is an otherwise very nice jacket.
Peak performance and versatility
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. First off, I have to say, upon opening the box I was a tad skeptical about the color of this jacket, but immediately opened my closet and paired this with my other coats flawlessly. I received the jacket on a Sunday and I don’t think I took it off until Thursday night. I have so far worn it to school, on a date, to work out in, and to play golf in. I have found it comfortable down into the higher 40’s with gloves. It is so soft! And actually got softer with the first wash. The pockets have zippers which is awesome, and the zippers are low profile & so far very functionally efficient. The waist hem doesn’t have a drawcord, but the fit is so tailored it is unnecessary. I am 6’1”, 203 lbs, and an XL was perfect. After seeing the jacket’s versatility this week I plan to include it as layers for all foreseeable activities.
