Belay Blue accents NOT black
This jacket is perfect for what it is. I love all the pockets including the dual drop pockets inside, dual chest pockets outside, and the hand pockets. Everything is the Patagonia quality you would expect. The fit is slim, but not as tight as the R1 1/4 zip pullover, and this R2 does layer over an R1 pullover of the same size (medium in my case). The R2 arm pits are a lot less tight compared to the R1 pullover as well. The one thing I would caution is that the Belay Blue version appears to have black accents in all pics you can find, including the chest pockets and hems, however, it’s not actually black. It appears to be a dark maroon color that I think Patagonia may call Obsidian Plum. I definitely think this jacket would look better with actually black accents, but it’s still nice and my wife convinced me not to return it. I own several Patagonia tshirts and an R1, all in medium, and this jacket fits very similar, so I’d say you’re safe to order your normal size. If I wanted to layer it over anything really thick, I might want to size up, but I don’t anticipate doing that.
Best all around jacket I’ve ever owned
I’ve had this coat for 2+ years now and it is my go-to for cool weather. I can wear this jacket solo comfortably 50 down to 20 degrees. It also makes an excellent mid layer when paired with a wind shell if it’s colder out. It’s not a rain jacket or a windbreaker, but it can certainly be worn comfortably in a drizzle or when it’s a bit gusty. Keeps me very warm, especially if I start moving. In terms of durability, the tech face is great for abrasion resistance. I’m pretty hard on my gear; I do a lot of bush whacking and wood work, and honestly this jacket has held up FAR better than it should have. Honesty I have beat the tar out of this thing, and while it has a couple scuffs and holes from me being careless with it, it has held up phenomenally. I plan to buy another one soon but it never goes on sale. Most expensive gear is hard to justify the price tag of, but if you’re on the fence about this one, go for it. You will not regret it. The ONLY downside is that the hood looks a little goofy but it is VERY warm, especially when doubled up when another hood. Sits right against the head to keep all the heat in.
Outstanding Jacket!
Looks great, perfect fit (size large - I’m 6 ft, 190). Excellent casual fall or spring jacket. Good option for winter sports. Only downside is the price.
R2 Techface
My favorite fleece type jacket & I’ve had a lot. Lightweight, versatile & a ton of pockets. The only negative is no waist draw cord. Not a huge deal. Highly recommend.
Sizing Problem
A good form fitting jacket but the size is way off; large is loose and the medium is too tight for a 5'11" 175 lb Athletic build person.
Good but the previous model is superior.
I have the previous model (F22) in Plume Grey and absolutely love the thing. I own two older R2s made from the Polartec Thermal Pro fleece and they're my favorite sweaters/fleece I own (25ish from several companies). Love the Better Sweater, Love the Retro-X. If there's no wind, I usually wear an R2, if there's wind, I wear the R2 techface. In my opinion, the previous model (STY83730) is far superior to this redesign. I ordered directly from Patagonia in the Belay Blue and when it arrived I immediately knew something was off. I compared it to my F22 model and everything felt different. The interior fleece is soft, absolutely, and better than most others found in the market imo. The fleece on the previous model is just softer. Same thing applies to the face fabric: it's soft, the older one is softer. The face fabric is also "louder" than its predecessor in that it's more noisy when running a hand across it or rubbing against itself when walking. I called Patagonia and a very nice representative confirmed that different fabrics are used in this most recent iteration, slightly more recycled and slightly heavier iirc. The feel and softness of the fleece I could live with, its still quite soft. I trust Patagonia construction and I basically live in my other R2s so no issues there, Bravo. What just totally killed this piece for me is the redesign of the sleeve cuffs. The more basic elastic cuffs coupled with the redesign of the sleeves making them less tapered and more "relaxed" meant I had to return it. My favorite thing about the F22 models was that they fit like a second skin, especially the arms. The cut and articulation of the sleeves was unlike anything I've ever worn and with the stretch material at the cuffs, it was .. nirvana. I continue to hunt for the Pitch Blue and Tidepool Blue colors in the hoody. I read somewhere that another redesign is coming for SP24, please bring back the tapered sleeves and those sweet, sweet cuffs Patagonia. I know you read these :) Would I recommend this to a friend? Id ask how they like their sleeves to fit and go from there. Personally, I'm shopping used R2s for my cozy meditations.
Looks & fits great
Great zip up, just fits great I’m 5’10 215, warm enough for cooler morning & as a layer.. I’d recommend this for just about any activity you want to do.
