I received these boots for free as part of the REI Trailblazers sampling program. Initially I was hesitant to try these boots, since I typically hike in trail runners. However, after trying them on I was surprised by how comfortable they were. They feel fairly lightweight compared to most other hiking boots l've worn. They have great ankle support, and don't dig into my Achilles when hiking. I would have given them 5 stars, but the fit is fairly narrow. I ordered my normal size, but wish I would have sized up at least a half size. Overall I feel like these would be a great boot for day hikes, or short backpacking trips in wet conditions.
These are the most comfortable boots I own. They are great on the uneven granite and hard sand trails of Arizona and anywhere in the SW. They are a great choice for dirt as well, I've put over 500 miles of hiking on the Tahoe Mid GTX boots from Asolo. They are a well designed and engineered pair of boots. They are sturdy and have fantastic grip along with a breaking system which definitely helps when your coming down steep rock faces. These boots give you the comfort and confidence you are looking for on a longer hike. They breathe well and have a Gortex liner so you can get across shallow streams or puddles and keep your feet dry.
Hiked 14 miles around Mount Rainier. Traction was great, and uppers were completely waterproof. The soles are very stiff and cushioning is great. They are very comfortable for extended periods of time. I would buy again and again.
great boots! they’re waterproof (but breathable) and comfortable from the get-go. cannot emphasize enough how comfy they were from the first hike: no break-in period whatsoever. the lacing system was nice: i don’t recall needing to lace up again
These boots are very lightweight, supportive, and stuff - this makes for a low key, very secure fit. Though they're supportive, this doesn't translate to cushioning, and I'd wish that it was a bit more cushy, but nothing is uncomfortable. I have a moderately high-volume foot that's wide throughout (as opposed to just wide in the.forefoot/toe box), and these shoes just barely fit. I'd call them average - not narrow, but they're light and flexy enough to accommodate a slightly wide foot. Volume wasn't a problem. The boots grip well in loose surfaces, the tread seems pretty durable, and the waterproofing seemed adequate on a few rainy walks, but the material of the soles does not lend itself well to grip on smooth and wet surfaces. I've only taken these boots on unloaded hikes (daypacks, waistpacks) but haven't felt any hotspots. Think that they run relatively cool for a waterproof boot. Looking forward to trying it on a few backpacking trips!
I have done a few hikes in these boots now. Longest hike was only about 6.5 miles. I love the look, fit and feel of these. Traction on all surfaces so far has been great. Trails I was on varied between dirt, sandy decomposed granite, and rock. One of the hikes was shortly after a rain storm and all surfaces were slightly wet. No slipping. I had been going back and forth between these and Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid. I thought those were very nice as well. However, I think these have a bit more ankle support and bit stiffer sole (both things I wanted). They are still very light weight. I know REI cannot carry every boot model in their store, but this would be a good one for them to have in store.
I’ve been positively surprised by the Asolo Tahoe Mid GTX. This is my first pair of boots from Asolo and for a show with this much ankle support, they are quite light. Breathability was the second major surprise. Most other waterproof boots have my feet sweating in minutes, these are much more comfortable. I do find them a touch narrow, so consider trying a half size up for a little room.
I bought these Asolo Tahoe mid-height Goretex hiking boots after reading Backpacker magazine’s review of hiking boots. I agree with Backpacker that the worst thing about these boots is that the laces are rather thin, making them a little uncomfortable on the fingers when cinching them tight. But the boots were very comfortable right out of the box, requiring no real break-in period. It’s been very dry here for months, so I have not tested their waterproofness yet. A recommended purchase.
The last pair of Asolo's I bought leaked. So I checked these boots in a tray of water filled to about 3.5 cm prior to wearing them. I checked after about 10 hours and they both were wet inside. I returned them to REI.
Nice light weight hiker, minimal cushion in ball part of the boot. Aftermarket insoles made a big improvement.
