I analyzed the heat retention and it's solid

Bottom line: this mug has far better heat retention compared to a regular mug I was curious to hear reviews that this mug has poor heat retention compared to a regular mug, so as anyone procrastinating their real work does, I poured the same amount of boiling water into the REI mug with lid and a regular mug. I put both outside in a windy, 34 degree F evening, and measured their temperatures at 5 minute intervals for 30 minutes. I read the ideal coffee temperature is between 120 amd 140 F. The REI mug maintained at least 120F temperature for 35 minutes, while the regular mug only lasted about 10 minutes. This was most likely due to the lid on the REI mug, however that's how one would use it in the real world anyway. Not well insulated at all

"Double-wall" insulation is only meaningful if there is an appreciable gap between the walls. That's where the insulation comes from. These walls are only 0.10" thick. That's for two layers of metal, paint, and the gap, which is why they don't hold temperatures. A Hydro Flask wine tumbler, for example, is 0.18" thick. Much better!

My go-to camping mug!

I love this mug for camp! It's durable (I tend to be hard on my camp supplies), easy to clean, and the Opt Outside design is the perfect vibe for a chilly morning at camp. If you keep the lid on, it stays warm for a couple hours, so if you're looking for something that keeps it hot for longer, probably not the best option. It's also pretty lightweight, so I like to clip it onto my pack and take it with me.

Keeping the heat

We bought two of these cups for camping. Given the comments about beverages not staying warm, in our 70 degree house we poured boiling water from a kettle into the cup and put the lid on. After an undisturbed 20 minutes, the temperature of the water measured with a candy thermometer was 150 degrees. That’s good enough for most types of camping. This is a cup, not a thermos.

Looks Good, but Lacks Good Heat Retention

When I took it camping in near-freezing weather, the heat escaped rather quickly, turning my hot chocolate to room-temperature chocolate in about 20 minutes. When I poured boiling water into the mug, the outside became uncomfortably warm. For an insulated steel mug, I expected better heat retention. That said, the ergonomics of the mug are nice. The lid forms a nice seal, and the actual drinking experience is nice. Would be great for use at home for the morning joe. Just don't expect it to be your cold-weather camping mug.

Does the Job 🆙

I ordered two of these “coffee mugs.” ☕️ ☕️ My favorite color is blue, which is one reason why I ordered the blue option with the carabiner design. This particular “coffee mug” is not the greatest at keeping my coffee hot for a long period of time, but it “does the job.” 🆙 After all, it should not take “half a day” to drink one cup of coffee, right? 🙂 The bottom line is that this “coffee mug” has my favorite color with a nice design, and it “does the job.” 🆙 I would recommend these “coffee mugs!” 🙂

Not vacuum insulated

This is a decent mug that keeps drinks hot for a little while, but it’s only double walled and not vacuum insulated. I would go with a Miir or Hydroflask next time for a minimal price difference.
