tldr; A well-built shoe capable of light to moderate trail duty. Excels in a "mixed use" environment, going from paved trails to single track without missing a beat. Sizing is accurate but fit is narrow. Not recommended for over-pronators. Out of the box it is apparent that this is a high-quality shoe. Materials are durable and the styling is unique without being obnoxious or making the shoe look like a bubble (something I've noticed as an unfortunate trend lately). I went strictly off the size chart on the REI website even though I have seen reviews that said it runs a little small - I almost always wear size 12 with a few brand exceptions (Nike and Altra I wear 12.5) and the size chart put me in a 12 for the Sense Ride 5. The fit is accurate in foot length, but this show does run on the narrow side. My foot is a bit narrow and I usually do not like a large toebox, but the Sense Ride tested the boundaries for me. The toe box runs small compared to a lot of modern running shoes and the mid-foot is also narrow. That being said, I wouldn't let it stop you from trying these shoes but if your foot is mid-width or wide you may need to go a half size up. If you hate a small toebox, I would recommend looking at other options. On the foot the shoe is very comfortable. There is a lot of "squishy" cushioning in the sole that makes this a nice shoe to walk in. I wanted to make sure the shoes were broken in properly so my first outing was a walk on a paved mixed-use trail and they were immediately very pleasant to walk in - no break-in period required. I was initially skeptical about the quick-lace system, but it is excellent and holds the shoe in place without needing to over-tighten. There are also elastic holding the tongue in place which helps give the mid-foot a snug and secure fit. On the trail, the Sense Ride is quite stable and absorbs a lot of the uneven terrain as one would hope for a trail running shoe. I think this shoe is better suiting for "light to moderate" trail use because while the soft cushioning absorbs impact well, it also allows you to feel the trail through the sole. If your area has a lot of rocks or roots, a more protected shoe may be better suited to your trails. One drawback while running is that there is some heel slippage, particularly when going uphill - it isn't enough to cause blistering but if you don't like your shoe to shift at all it is something to keep in mind. For me, the biggest drawback of the Sense Ride is that it is not well suited for over-pronators. My left foot tends to roll in towards the arch when I run and this shoe seems to exacerbate the problem. I tried to get a good picture of it, but after putting about 20 miles on the shoe my foot was tending to fall on the edge of the sole and work in more than normal. After about 50 miles the shoe is to the point where I don't want to run in it for fear of injury. For this reason I don't think the Sense Ride will be a good long-term option for me. Overall, I am impressed with the Sense Ride, in particular the build quality and stability as well as some details like the exceptional quick lace system. I would recommend these to anyone who is looking for a lighter trail shoe so long as you are ok with a narrow fit and do not have over-pronation tendencies.

Not Great but Not Bad

I have used these shoes about 5 times so far and have gone trail running for several miles, wore them when going to stores, and wore them playing pickleball. They are fairly stiff out of the box with a couple of pressure points, particularly on the outside/lateral side of each foot. They have softened up some but still are somewhat uncomfortable. I'm sure they will become more comfortable with more use. I somewhat expected more cushion and shock absorbtion. The ankle support is adequate. The tread is great; I ran on some loose dirt and did not slip. The pull laces are convenient and hold well.

Missouri Show Me Salomon Sense Ride 5

Welcome to the quick out of the box review of Salomon Sense Ride 5. Disclaimer up front, due to older age and some abuse from previous decades of hiking and climbing my feet prefer to be pampered now. Which has taken my preference to Hoka's and Brooks. I can be pretty hard on shoes, doing about 6-7 miles a day, so I am very interested to see how they can last with my abuse. (btw, Hoka wear out fast.) But, this is about the Sense Ride 5. First the looks, which is just ok, nothing to special nor outrageous, which suites me just fine. Prefer durability and quality over looks. I do have to say, my feet do feel pretty good in them and they feel very true to size. The heel collar is stiffer than some of my other shoes when putting them on, which then gives a good snug fit when on the trails. Maybe they will loosen up after 100 miles or so. The grip of the sole does great in the different terrains, did not experience any slippage from these shoes. Living in the Midwest means a high exposure to high temperatures and humidity, thus I really appreciate the breathability of the mesh uppers. The comfort of the insoles is not like my Hoka's, but very few shoes are. The speed lace system is ok, I am old school and like to tie my shoes, but I have not notice any slippage yet, so let's hope it stays that way in miles to come. Overall opinion for the Sense Ride 5, it is a good shoe that will do everything they said it would, going from hardcore trail running to the pavement with the better half they are on their way to seeing many steps.

Solid Shoe for the Trails

I've gone on a handful of runs in New England trails (read: rocky and rooty) over the past few weeks with these. And so far so good. The shoe has cushioning that is a good middle ground - you get some cushioning, but it's not so soft that you feel every rock. And it isn't so tall you worry about stability. It's very breathable and I assume would dry fast if I had gotten it wet. Grip isn't an issue on any terrain I've tried so far. I have many miles on other shoes with the Quicklace system and I still like it on this shoe - it's easy to tighten evenly and doesn't come loose. My only complaint is that it is a little on the small side. I usually order a half size up for my trail runners so that when I inevitably kick a rock I have a little cushion. I got a half size up here and it felt more like my normal shoe. If you're on the border between sizes, definitely go up.

Grippy, narrow, breathable trail runners

I LOVE Salomon's lacing system. It is very, very convenient. I try to tighten my shoes at the summits before running down, as a learned experience from getting black toenails. Sometimes laziness gets the best of me and I avoid tightening the shoes if I think they'd be alright. With this lacing system, it takes about 20 seconds to get them tight again. I can only guess these will save me from a few black toenails. The other thing I really liked is how grippy they feel. The tread feels very aggressive and perfect for uneven terrain. I didn't get a chance to try them on smooth rock slabs, but the weather helped me to test in a wide variety of terrains where it performed great. Muddy trails, dry rocky trails, roots, grass, river rocks. These made for a very stable and solid footing. I cannot find anything about a rock plate on Salomon's website, however I can say that they are comfortable on rocky terrain. Other shoes may offer more rock protection, but definitely I think these offer enough for me. I used them on a rough-trail/boot-path with some sharp rocks and I felt comfortable. They have a 8mm Heel-Forefoot drop. I was kind of concerned about this detail, but I found that for me it doesn't feel like a big drop. They have a similar feeling to 6mm or 7mm drop shoes that I've used. From looking at them on the side, I thought they'd feel very tall; However I found that's not the case. Another thing I appreciate is the wide sole on the heel. It makes for a stable feeling. I have some ankle instability, and the feeling of tall-narrow soles (especially on the heel) can be unnerving. So I appreciate the extra stability offered by these shoes. Now what I don't think it's great: These things are small enough that I still think it's a 5/5 product, but I still think it's worth mentioning to help people when choosing their shoe :) The color: They look nice when they're new, but I run a lot on muddy trails. They will very soon look not so nice. The little pocket for the lacing system: It sits right below the last lace crossing, so it can be kind of awkward to try to pull that little pocket from below to then stow the lacing plastic thing. For fit: They are on the narrower side. I think they are a bit more snug on the lower forefoot than my Sportiva Bushido. I know some people steer away from those for being narrow, so this comparison may be useful. However, the fabric is a bit less stiff, so it was still comfortable and I soon felt that they were not as snug. If you are on the verge with this shoe, and the width is what's stopping you, I'd still give it a go. The snug feeling went away after about 10 miles for me. I'm more into shoes that let you feel the ground. These ones are more on the cushiony side. It's not too much, I still like them, but I think these are as far as I can go with cushion and still like them. I tried them both with the original insoles and Superfeet insoles. I like my insoles better, of course, but I like that these provide enough foot volume for me to put the insoles and not feel like the foot volume changed. These shoes are quite breathable. I didn't get that much sweat after a long run. I wouldn't call these the most breathable shoes I've used. However they are breathable enough, such that I wouldn't discard them if I were looking for breathable runners. Hope that makes sense? 4/5 in breathability or something like that.

My Favorite All Around Shoe in the Salomon Line

If you are looking for one shoe to do it all, from training runs to races of all distances, this is the Swiss army knife of Salomon trail running shoes. These shoes feature the perfect blend of cushioning, support and traction for any and all types of terrain. I wear the Martina editions because I like my shoes a little flashy. The quick laces make adjusting them on the fly easy and the price point is generous for all the features you are getting. Whether it's a 5k at your local park or 50 miles through the rugged mountains, the Sense 5s will help you cross the line in comfort.

Sturdy and agile

These are the first pair of trail running shoes I've worn! Previously I had only used regular sneakers, hiking sandals, or full hiking boots. I wore them on the first part of the Mt Beacon trail in Hudson Valley NY. It's a medium to steep rock ascent, and the uphill climb was slow and steady. I ran the downhill and these definitely gave me a lot of agility with sufficient protection. Outside of running, I think these will replace hiking boots as well, except for maybe the most rugged conditions. I did notice that my toes were unprotected compared to hiking boots, but that is just the tradeoff. Size: slightly small; I usually wear US 9.5/EU 43 but sized up to US 10 and they fit perfectly Fit: very good; no loose or tight areas with plenty of width and toebox Traction: gets the job done on rock; I imagine it would be fine on everything else except perhaps loose sand/dirt

A Solid and Comfortable Trail-Running Shoe

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. My first impression is a stylish, high quality, and lightweight trail-running shoe. I took a test run on Poo Poo Point in Issaquah, WA, and it felt solid and comfortable right out of the box. The drawstring laces took some getting used to, but they were easy to use and adjust. My only comment is that they are somewhat elastic so they do not get as tight as traditional shoelaces. The orthotic insoles were more than adequate in terms of shock absorption and arch support. The traction felt positive and secure, as I like to run the trail at a good pace going down. Overall, this is a great shoe and will likely be one of my favorites, even for daily wear.

Pretty Nice

These shoes are pretty good. They are comfortable and have a decent amount of cushion while still allowing you to feel the ground. They grip well enough for the smaller sized lugs on them. The shoes are light weight. My normal size fits just fine. They are a bit narrow as Solomon’s normally are. Side note I broke these in by playing a few rounds of golf and they perform well as a golf shoe. These are good shoes, nothing mind-blowingly awesome but just a solid shoe.
