Five Stars for Gregory Trek Hydro

This is a very nice product. The entire setup is 7 ounces. The tubing is removable and is 2 ounces. It doesn’t leak. It holds 3 liters no problem. The water intake comes fully off, so loading fresh water in is a snap. There is a toggle for outflow to make drinking more efficient. The material won’t collect dew, but it might get damp in high humidity with fresh cold water. The bag is compatible with Osprey and Gregorypacks as far as I can tell. This does NOT come with a filter. The bag can be hung and even used as a shower with some decent mesh to cover the inflow (turned outflow) valve. My big thing with water bags is whether they’re worth it from a weight perspective. Three empty 20 -ounce water bottles is only about half the weight. KUIU makes a lighter bag, but still, it’s questionable to use a bag and probably unnecessary. Unless, you have to not stop moving like in a military situation, or you can’t be moving, like you’re hunting. Still, if you decide on a bag, this is as good as you’re going to find. Have fun and keep on hiking.

Amazing little hydration reservoir

This is a great bladder for a hydration pack. There is a flow rate adjuster on the bite valve if you need to conserve water for a longer trip, though for hikes or day trips, I felt that 3 L was more than sufficient. The tubing is quick release (and doesn’t spill water when you do), and there are handles on the top (to hang from a tree or other, strap included), bottom (to hook into your hydration pack’s buckle spot) and down the side for your hand. And for camping or to share water, it can hang on a branch and there’s a pour spout. When it’s all the way full, it’s not too heavy in your pack. Overall this hydration reservoir is so well thought out! The only thing I thought could be improved is that the way the bite valve is oriented you have to hold it up while you’re drinking to hold it vertically. It would be more natural to be able to pick it up off the magnetic holder and have stay in a horizontal position from my shoulder to my mouth.

3D Hydro Must Have

I'd highly recommend this bladder. Initially its an odd shape, but it fits so well on my small day pack. It was designed very well with functionality of several different occasions. The mouthpiece allows water to flow easily with minimal effort, which I find is important when hydrating and breathing are competing priorities. The handle makes it simple to refill with one hand and the lid screws on without having to maneuver in an odd way. The lid also acts as a pour spout. If you flip the bladder upside down, there is a hook on the back so that it can be hung and used as a water spout. Becaise it is 3D, when its time to put it away between trips, it dries itself out without any extra tools. At 3 liters, this is a great addition and go-to for those long treks, hot days, or family outings.

Versatile water reservoir for all things outdoors

There are many things to like about the design of this reservoir. The 3D construction feature that I am already well used to and like from other models works as good on this one, allowing for easy reservoir handling (filling, washing). Then, there is a built-in handle, attachment points on both sides, included webbing strap, quick disconnect tube that is compatible with my other systems, magnetically held bite valve with an additional lever operated shut- off valve...many things to like. I was specifically looking for a large reservoir that is shaped differently than typical, elongated body ones. Some of the packs I use for activities like gravel biking or backcountry skiing are either limited in size or packed with other bulky equipment that makes use of a large, standard shape reservoir inconvenient or impossible. This one finally allows me not to compromise on what I can pack. The included webbing strap can be used to secure the reservoir to your pack's mounting point (if the strap/hook is not already provided with your pack), or when the reservoir is used in "basecamp mode". In this mode, the reservoir can be taken out of a backpack and hung upside down and be used as a water dispenser for your camp needs. The reservoir's screw-on cap has a high-flow push valve built into it, and it work very well, mimicking your typical camping reservoir's spout. However, one think that I am not a big fan of - the cop covering this push valve while not in use is just a simple cover held in place by friction. Keep in mind, although I have tried to make the push valve open "accidentally" I was not able to do it. The valve held and there is no solid reason for me to believe that it would start leaking on its own...but I would feel much batter if the protective cap that covers the valve was also screwed on. Overall, really happy with it. The time will tell if there was anything to worry about when it comes to the built-in push valve.

Neat Hydration Reservoir with Extra Capability

The reservoir's overall build quality is commendable, though I did have a minor issue with the drinking hose in a "normal" hydration pack configuration. Replacing the original right-angle hose the pack comes with with a straight one that you might already have attached to your pack can cause pinching due to the quick disconnect for the reservoir pointing straight down. This can interfere with the water flow when the reservoir is in this orientation, so I had to flip it over and have the drinking hose exiting the top of the bag, losing some effectiveness drinking capability. Despite this minor inconvenience, the pack performs well during hiking trips. Its design is pretty user-friendly allowing for easy filling and cleaning. The handle is a great feature making filling it quite easy, and the general shape of it and its recommended placement in a backpacking pack I could see as great ideas. I look forward to using it as a camp water source. I also enjoy that the hose it came with included the magnetic clasp to attach to your pack. Overall solid hydration reservoir.

Extra features make it nice.

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I've owned several bladders from different companies over the years, and this is a nice one. Just to state the obvious, it won't slip into skinny shaped bladder pockets found in many packs. But it does lay nicely at the top of a top loading pack. It fits great in my existing Gregory pack hydro-sleeves (old and new). While the body is flexible, it does keep its shape, so it dries out easily after washing. No more jamming random kitchen objects in there to dry it out! I was skeptical about the fill cap. It has a built in tap, like a box wine spigot. I thought it would leak, but it never did (3 weeks of near daily use) That spigot is handy for hanging it up in camp, or in your camper van (this will be great for winter car camping where I worry about water freezing). If you haven't used a magnetic tube keeper, they are also great. It's nice that they include the whole magnet kit. My only real gripe is with the bite valve. It's finnicky, so you have to position it just right between your teeth. And even then, the flow is a bit weak. I had to work at it to get a reasonable drink, which is a problem when breathing hard. The tube is standard size, so switching to your favorite bite valve is super easy. The bite valve is available separately, and some reviewers had similar issues. Otherwise, it's 5 stars.

A great water storage option

I’ve been using this over the past few weeks and it is overall a great little water reservoir. I REALLY like the “base camp” mode that allows you to use the spout in the front of the reservoir without a bite valve/hose. However, I’m not a fan of how loose the cap covering the spout can be- it’s not screw on/screw off, but rather just pushes on and off. Because of this, it can fall off kinda easily over time. I’ve generally opted to just use this as a sort of water storage- great to take camping for extra water, showering off real quick after a hike or the bike part, filling up my dog’s bowl, etc. and takes up far less space than a classic water storage option. The plastic feels a little more rigid and durable compared to other water hiking/biking reservoirs. That said, it feels a little awkward in some packs and requires a titch more room. I did not end up taking this guy on my backpacking trip; it’s designed to be thrown on the top of your pack before closing it up and I’m sure it works really well. However, my pack that I use is super minimal and a roll top without a hole or place for a water valve to thread through, so it just became a hassle to deal with figuring out how to secure down my pack via the roll top while not obstructing the valve. Overall, I do really enjoy this reservoir and it earned a spot in my gear simply for the base camp mode. I use it almost every other day because of this feature.

Best reservoir for backpacking

It should be noted that these are designed for larger packs (like those for backpacking, canyoneering) and not day packs (they make regular 3D Hydros for those). The 3D Trek is perfect for backpacking and a lot of thought was clearly put into the design. The short, stout design is great because you can either put it in the hydration sleeve without having to shove it all the way down on a full pack or you can just throw it right on top of everything. This is a great option if, like me, you forget to put it in before repacking everything else or don’t have a hydration sleeve. I love that you have the option to easily hang it with the webbing and hanger strap. When I get to camp I hang it up so I can easily fill my Nalgene or JetBoil. The improvements Gregory made are so perfect. The thicker material makes it more durable and holds its shape even better. I like the new, angled bite-valve with a better swivel open/close valve, which makes it even easier to use on the move. I also love the improvement to the magnet and pack clip. The magnetized clip used to come off on one side and the mouthpiece would detach from it, but now the clip stays put much better and the magnet on the hose itself now swivels with movement instead of being fixed to the mouthpiece. In the 3D Trek Hydro, I think Gregory has created the ultimate backpacking hydration reservoir. It’s super easy to use, versatile, filling is a breeze and doesn’t end up spilling when trying to close it.

Updated Reservoir for User Needs

The Gregory 3D Hydro Trek Reservoir covers most of the bases for multi-purpose use. The wide mouth and handle placement make filling and cleaning simple. The body plastic is thick enough it won't easily puncture (always a plus). The guide included nicely laid out its various intended purposes and how to set up the reservoir for each. It's worth noting that while the magnetic latch on the drinking tube is clever, it could potentially get disconnected/knocked off if not placed in an odd spot on a shoulder strap.

SO VERSATILE and multi-purposeful!!!

So versatile!!!! I truly enjoy how multi-purposeful the Gregory 3D Hydro Trek Hydration Reservoir is unlike others that are strictly for putting into a backpack or hydropack. I hang it at camp to have an easy way to fill up cups, etc, before leaving camp. When it's time to leave, it transforms into a hydropack for my backpack. 3L is great size too, enough for some friends and family to use too. No leaks or issues with closing it, which totally sucks when it leaks.
