Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Warm, thoughtful details, nicely tailored
Nearly perfect, and the best fleece pants for winter activities that I've ever used. I wore these while skiing, hiking, and walking the dog in Minnesota in temperatures between -5 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Here are my thoughts: The good: - Very warm - almost too warm under snow pants. Did a great job blocking wind when worn alone. - Tailored for activity - Nicely gusseted crotch allows for great range of motion, and slim silhouette means you can layer it under snow pants. The ankle hem has a nice elastic, but doesn't pull the material into an unsightly bunch which means they can be comfortably tucked into your ski boot or sit above the boot gaiter. - Large, lay flat pockets - pocket lining is a thin mesh which allows the pockets to lay flat and won't bunch up under layers or when physically active. They are large enough to hold even the biggest phones. - Thoughtful details - REI went above and beyond basic fleece pants by using a bungee cord for the waist cinch, a locker loop above the inside tag, a zipper on the rear pocket (so valuables don't fall out) and color-matching the REI label on the waist. The bad: - Almost too warm - I wouldn't wear them under snow pants unless its colder than 10 degrees Fahrenheit - Fuzzies - I wear merino socks for my winter escapades, and there was a not-insignificant amount of orange fuzzies left behind on them after wearing these pants. - Washing requirements - Instructions say to use cold water, and because they're a slim fit I'm afraid that any shrinking that might result from an accidental wash in warm water or heat from drying will make them unusable for me. TLDR: Warm, thoughtful details, nicely tailored for activity
Comfortable, Warm, Well Made
My waist/inseam = 38/32, and these REI Trailmade Fleece Pants size XL fit me very well. They are not too tight or too baggy, and have enough stretch so they never bind with movement or sitting. There is one zippered rear pocket (first pic) and two large hand pockets. The 3rd pic shows the pocket materials with the pants turned inside out. The middle pic shows the waist cinch in front and the hang loop in front of the rear tag. Upon close inspection these pants are very well constructed. I spent some time outside in the low 40's, and my legs were comfy toasty. I don't intend to hike in these because I often travel through snaggy brush, and these pants don't have belt loops (I carry accessories on my belt). However, these will be great for camping in cold weather when I'm ready to take off my dirty trail pants. They're great around the house inside and out, and for walking about.
Cozy Warm Fleece Pants
REI asks that product testers do what they can to test and show products in the "wild." With the Trailmade Fleece Pants, some of that wild is going to be happening around the house. Not only do these pants make for cozy lounging, but they make for even cozier lounging for the kitten, cat, or lapdog of your choosing. Should you find yourself outdoors with these pants, camping, skiing, clearing snow, or whatever the case may be, they'll keep you comfortable and warm. For alpine skiers, these can serve as an extra base layer under shell pants on those extra cold days. Pictured here are the "tall" product. With their softness and lack of static cling, they could be swapped out for a lighter base layer. At just under 6'2", these provide full coverage. If wanting to use these as a base layer, the regular length would likely be a better fit to avoid bunching around the top of ski boots. Same for hanging around camp while wearing a higher cut boot or shoe. These have become my go-to winter lounge wear and they may fit the same bill for you.
Fleece Pants: Comfy, Versatile for any adventure
These fleece pants are incredibly comfortable, thanks to the soft, brushed fleece. They provide a nice level of warmth without being too bulky, and are perfect for cold bay area mornings. The relaxed fit is also very comfortable and allows for plenty of freedom of movement. Quality: The quality of these pants is excellent. The fleece fabric is durable and well-made, and the stitching is neat and tidy. The pants also seem to be well-constructed and should withstand regular wear and tear. REI Co-op Men's Trailmade Fleece Pants Comfort: These fleece pants are incredibly comfortable, thanks to their soft, brushed fleece fabric. They feel great against the skin and provide a nice level of warmth without being too bulky. The relaxed fit is perfect and allows for plenty of freedom of movement. I've even been wearing these while working out occasionally. Quality: The quality is excellent. The fleece fabric is durable the pockets are thoughtfully designed, well-made, and the stitching is neat and tidy. They've remained soft after a couple washes. Things I Like: The drawstring waist is comfortable and allows for a customizable fit. The fit is excellent and provides a nice balance of comfort and mobility. The pockets are roomy and can easily hold a phone, wallet, or other essentials. Things to Improve: The addition of drawstrings to each leg at the bottom would allow for a more adjustable fit and would help to prevent the pants from riding up. Overall: The REI Co-op Men's Trailmade Fleece Pants are a great option for anyone looking for a comfortable, versatile, and well-made pair of fleece pants. They are perfect for camping, hiking, lounging around the house, or just running errands. I highly recommend them!
Like a wearing a blanket
These pants are so warm. I wore them on a number of walks around my neighborhood and lounged around the house with them. They are like wearing a blanket. It’s a perfect match for my NorthFace Denali jacket. The build quality of the pants are solid too (nicer than my Denali when it comes to finishing). There is a nice elastic drawstring that is a continuous loop so you don’t loose it and it has nice push button toggle so adjustments to the drawstring are quick and easy. The pants use flat seem stitching so you shouldn’t have worry about chafing if you are out on a longer adventure. The zipper pocket on the back is robust and the finish on the front pockets have a nice feel to them. The pockets use a traditional pocket material so don’t expect fleece in them. In conclusion these are great pants to lounge around in or something to keep my legs warm on a chilly day (without wind). I am not a fan of the orange but it’s not a bad color if I want to be seen while I am out.
Comfy for hanging out and evening walks.
Opening up the packaging, the first thing that I noticed about the pants was the bright orange color. It definitely wasn't a color that I would think to pick out for myself, but they are a fun and unique color that you don't see around often. Along with the cool color, the fleece material is incredibly soft and comfortable, and the elastic band around the ankle gives the pants a great fit any time you're wearing them around the house without shoes. Unlike other "jogger" style sweatpants, I was pleasantly surprised that these had hand pockets and a rear zipper pocket. The fit is also much better than most pants I've worn; my thighs and butt are big enough relative to my waist that most pants are usually too tight through the upper leg. These pants, though, give ample space to move and fit a more athletic build quite well. After taking a few afternoon walks in below freezing weather, I can confidently say that these will keep you comfortable even if it's a cold and windy day. As another plus, I could turn my thermostat down a few degrees and was still warm hanging around the house (for that reason, these pants will be a must on any car camping trip). Although they're very comfortable and warm, I'm not sure that I would wear these for anything more than taking walks around the neighborhood. On a hike or any deliberate exercise, the fleece is just too warm and non-breathable to dump excess heat, especially if the temperature is above 35F or so. For a casual weekend at home or at the campsite, though, these pants are a great option. Just make sure the marketing fits that description!
Poor seams.
Nice fleece material and pretty warm. A stitch at the waist started to unravel the first time I wore them. It is now unraveled for about 1/4 of the waist and I plan on returning it. I don't know anything about sewing but it seems like they could do something to lock the thread so that unravel completely if there is a single break.
Good for cooler outdoor events
I received these fleece pants (my first fleece pants) to test and review at a point that I didn’t have any outdoor excursions planned so I had to improvise testing. I used them when clearing a couple of minor snow falls as well as a few walks. The pants were plenty warm in mid to upper 30s weather with a little breeze (they are not designed to block wind). There are two deep front pockets and a rear zippered pocket. All three will securely hold my 6+” smart phone. Weight is jut under 10 oz so they will become mart of my cool weather gear.
Like Patagoni Synachilla for your legs
These absolutely rock. They are a really comfortable fit that is much more generous than most slim/straight fit sweatpants. Ever since I bought them I’ve been finding excuses to do laundry so I can wear them as much as possible. Only took them on one camping trip so far but they were great down to about 40 F, below which I’d probably opt for a base layer in addition. My only caveat is that it seems the pile has thinned somewhat after a handful of washes, so I’m interested to see how it holds up over time.
10/10 for lounge wear!
Super comfy! I bought 2 additional pair after the first because of the comfort. I wear a size 31/32 waist, and the M fits like a 32, so they are perfect for me. There isn't much flex room beyond this waist size for the M, so if you're a 33"+ waist, go large. I also got the "Short" inseam, which look to be 28" which again, works perfectly for my 5'7" height with no bunching at the ankles. I don't plan on taking these outdoors as they're my lounge pants, so don't have much info to contribute in regards to the durability.
