What would I do differently? Traditional sack-like pockets oriented to the _front_ of the leg for the hip pockets. To make them stellar, add secure button closures. The thigh pockets should be oriented to the _side_ of the thigh (where it's flat), then they could share vertical space with the hip pockets, and not overlap contents. Secure closures are a must for these, again I favor button closure over velcro but as long as they stay closed I'm cool either way. A dedicated phone pocket would be awesome.
I really wanted to love these pants--I've had good luck with Royal Robbins products in the past. But these are not great. On the plus side, the fabric is comfortable, and there's a secret pocket on one of the lower legs for stashing the zipped-off pants bottoms when you convert to shorts. Innovative and kinda cool! But what odd shapes are involved in the construction of these pants! The crotch hangs low enough to impede movement unless I pull the waist way up ridiculously high. And this is bizarre: the zippers that convert the pants to shorts open around back first. Every other pair of convertible hiking pants I've owned has zipped forward so that if you open the zippers halfway to vent, your knees get to breathe with each step as you walk. With this pair, unzipping halfway just results in feeling the unzipped zipper fold into the back of my knee with every step, but fails to vent. Worst of all, the pockets are all strangely shallow. I don't have the newest giant smartphone, but even my aging iPhone 8 sticks up out of the cargo pocket. And stuff falls out of the hand pockets when I sit--they're shallower than the pockets of any other pants I own. No idea if the insect repelling treatment works. Skip these pants.
These pants are the best travel pants I’ve found. The fabric is cool and light with a surprisingly natural feel. They are still a little baggy in the leg, ( less than they were a few years ago) which is appropriate. The pocket placement is excellent, with an extra zippered pocket on the leg and a small Velcro pocket close to the bottom of the leg. I love these pants.
I gave it a 4 because the cargo pockets and back pockets could be a little larger. They are well constructed and well designed, I'm assuming the bug barrier works. I've been in the bugs - mosquitoes and ticks - and no issues yet. These are the best convertible pants I've tried.
I like this pant mostly but it would be near perfect with zippered cargo pockets on both legs.
