Not waterproof. After about 15 min of being outside in light rain, water started leaking through.
I bought the new orange version of this jacket in XL. It was perfect. Super stylish, fantastic fit, lovely colour - it was everything I wanted in a rain jacket... until I wore it in the rain. That's what led me to give this jacket a two-star review. I wore it for the first time to work on a rainy day, and walked from one building to another across the street for a total distance of 20 meters. There were large splotches of moisture on certain parts of the jacket, so I opened it up to check to see if any got through, and it did. I'm confident that it wasn't condensation, because of the duration and temperature outside, so it was clearly water soaking through. I immediately brought it back and returned without issue, which was appreciated. I'm really disappointed because I absolutely loved the style of the jacket. If they could make it waterproof like they say it was, I'd immediately buy it again. I love Fjallraven, and have bought a number of their products in the past. This was the first time I was let down, so I'm hoping they correct this production/design error.
I am a big fan and collector of Fjallraven clothing and gear. I bought this jacket online and did not see it before purchasing it. Its a super thin and rubbery-like rain jacket. Yes, it is super light and almost paper thin. I wore it in a heavy rain while walking a mile and even though it has venting I found myself sweating under the unbreathable material. The jacket looks nice and it true to size but I did not like the experience in wearing it. I dont know how the $275 is justified. I should be retailing more for under $100. I ended up returning it which is not something I typically do with Fjallraven clothing.
After 30 minutes in rain this jacket is 50% saturated. On the plus side.. it looks good and fits nicely. Conversely, the matching pants do seem to be living up to the waterproof claim.
This jacket is a great example of a very simple design, executed almost flawlessly. The material has a high-quality feel to it, lightweight but not flimsy, and blocks water very effectively. The hood is well-sized for casual use/travel/etc (not oversized for a helmet) and adjusts with a simple pull on the back adjustment string. The drop hem provides extra coverage in the back and while bending over. The bottom hem is easily adjustable by pulling on adjustment strings from inside the pockets. The jacket has ventilation zips, but unlike the typical "pit zips," they are at the side of the jacket, behind pockets. This placement makes them MUCH easier to adjust while wearing the jacket than standard pit zips. This also allows you to easily access the pockets of whatever jacket/sweatshirt you have layered under the jacket. The snaps that secure the placket are easy to operate one-handed. The style of the jacket is very simple and understated and would be appropriate in a range of environments, whether on the trail or in an urban setting. Everything about this jacket feels functional and intuitive, and nothing about it feels superfluous. Just a great all-around rain jacket. Although it is more expensive than some rain shells you will find with comparable features, IMO the price is justified by the quality of the design and execution of this jacket. In terms of size and fit I'd say this jacket runs quite similar to other Fjallraven outerwear I've tried, and comparable to most other brands REI carries. With most brands I tend to fall between medium and large. As with most Fjallraven jackets, I could get away with wearing a medium but I opted for a large for a little extra room to move and ease of layering.
I bought this in May 2023 and from the get-go it was not waterproof at all. I wish I would’ve returned it, but I hung onto it. I recently took my dog for a walk and within less than two minutes of standing in the rain the entire inside of the jacket was soaked. Not sure how they can claim waterproof. At this price point the jacket is worthless.
Not waterproof at all. Have worn this multiple times in the rain and in a matter of few minutes (not exaggerating) the inside of the jacket gets damp/wet. For it being sold as "waterproof" AND for this price point I thought I would never have to deal with this problem. Going to return if possible.
Excellent water repellency. Worn in Europe and we are having a very wet spring. The sleeves seem to run a bit long, but there are velcro fasteners to close up the wrists. It is a very lightweight jacket, so if the weather is cool and wet, you may want to have a fleece jacket or long sleeve shirt as well. I bought this jacket as a replacement for a REI Gortex jacket I've had for decades, but was starting to develop small holes around the sleeves and the main zipper began to fail. I have two Fjallraven jackets and like their quality and attention to detail.
I'm conflicted about this review. I *wanted* to love this jacket. It has really great styling (IMHO), and the promise of being waterproof without Gore Tex - I won't go into the whole "forever chemicals" (PFAS/PFOA) discussion and commentary - just suffice to say I was hoping the reviews on this jacket as 'not being waterproof' were wrong. To be fair, there were several really positive reviews, and I went with that information. Again, I wanted to love this jacket. I put it to the honest test on a recent trip to Scotland in early November. The rain and wind proved to be the perfect test. And, the results were, well, less than desirable. The jacket is semi-waterproof, and by that I mean it appears to repel water (and does, partially), though in the end, walking a few miles out and about in a steady rain - well, nope, it's not. I ended up returning the second product ever to REI since I joined the Coop in 1979, and this was the product. I think if I hadn't experienced the steady rain conditions, it would have been fine. But, for the price, fine is not good enough. Still, a great looking jacket that fit very well.
Tried the jacket several times in moderate rainy Seattle days. The outer shell gets saturated quickly and the inside of the jacket damp. Not worth the $$$ as a rain jacket. Good fit and cut. Other things I would like at the price point: lined pockets, move the side vents away from the pockets (very easy to put hands onto the vent instead of the pocket), and an additional pocket. Ended up returning.
