Been riding for a long time and have always worn a helmet. Today I learned "why" Out riding some of our local trails and on a sandy/loose dirt descent, my bike completely slid out from under me, with the left side of my head smacking the ground hard. In all the years I've been riding and falling, this was the first time I can remember hitting my head so directly. I was wearing my new Smith Engage 2 that I purchased last month and was perfectly fine. No pain, no "bells rung" etc. Can't say that other helmets wouldn't have similarly protected me, but I know that this helmet did. This is what I was thinking about the entire ride home afterward, so much so that I had to write a review.
I upgraded my helmet a few months back. My old one was cheap ($30, didn’t have mips tech) and not very comfortable. I figured it was time to throw down proper money, and I loved the look of this helmet AND it was super comfortable and light. I’ve taken it on overnights and long days in the saddle and it felt like it wasn’t even there. Last week I was thrown over the handle bars of my bike at 20mph. My shoulder and helmet took the initial impact, the helmet continued to drag across the pavement after impact. I have a cracked collarbone but no head trauma whatsoever, not even a concussion. Thankful I had this on, and it definitely worked!
These helmets are great! Lightweight, snug and very comfortable! Great airflow and good looking helmet even on your head:) I would like to make one recommendation, and that is cushioning on the back of the helmet cradle as the plastic parts have sharp edges for a bald man as myself, I made my own with cloth tape and no longer cuts in to the back of my head.
After using my husband’s extra helmet for years I finally decided to get my own. So glad I did! This one is super comfy and it accommodates a ponytail! I can wear a high ponytail and tuck it in the helmet or lower my ponytail a bit and pull it through just above the adjusting dial. It’s amazing! I have mid length curly hair so it doesn’t get tangled in the dial, but if you have really long hair it might be a problem. It also fits well with my glasses and doesn’t push them down or pinch my ears. I haven’t had the unfortunate experience of actually testing the durability, but it seems like it would handle the job of protecting my head pretty well. Highly recommend!
While I have not had this helmet for long (1 week/1 two hour bike ride) and have not had the misfortune to perform an impact test, I have found this helmet to be quite adjustable to fit my cranium with and without a fairly thin skull cap. The brim extends adequately far from my forehead, and my bike mirror is able to clamp onto it quite securely. I chose this helmet over a slightly cheaper version that had soft rubber on the headband adjustment wheel as that softer rubber on my previous helmet turned into putty over time and jammed the adjustment wheel.
I love the fit of this helmet. It feels like it was customized for my head. I actually like to wear it! Very comfy. Love the well-designed adjustable visor - was tired of visors on other helmets that come off easily and get lost. I bought a matte white and cement one and I swear a couple pigeons have flown parallel with me briefly since I started wearing this helmet. Are they making sure I'm not a giant pigeon on a bike? Regardless of what pigeons might think, I like that color combo as well.
Extremely comfortable helmet. No pressure points, very even fit.
I purchased this helmet on Friday. I was originally looking for a full face but I could not find any instock and I was set to visit the mountain on Saturday. Well, after a full day of riding, my last run did me in. I mis-judged a jump and had a gnarley fall that resulted in my head fling straight into a massive boulder. My body was bruised, but this helmet saved my life... I would not be writing this write now if I hadn't been wearing it. I can honestly say, as hard as the impact was, I ended up with hardly any pain on my head. It absorbed the impact quite impressively. I didn't even have the feeling you'd get normally after such an impact. I was impressed... and humbled.
Smith makes quality helmets. Fits well on my large head. Mips system works nicely. Feels of better quality than other helmets that I have.
3/5 Good product. I use this helmet for gravel biking and mountain biking. It has worked well and its nice to have a helmet that I can use for both. Its a good product and is comfortable. However there are two things why I will not be buying this helmet again. The padding doesn't wick away moisture, it can stay wet for up to 2 days with typical ambient conditions (65degF and 40% RH). This gets old when I go for a bike ride one day then want to use it to commute in the next. The second reason is this helmet seems to sit lower on my forehead than previous helmets. This leads to issues with the helmet resting on the top of my sunglasses transferring some weight to the bridge of my nose, which is not great. Head shape can vary greatly so be sure to try this one before you take my review as fact...
