Slot canyon approved
On a recent outing in Death Valley’s Mosaic Canyon I had occasion to try Leki’s Journey Lite trekking poles. Although the shafts were somewhat narrower than I am accustomed, the three section telescoping poles proved more than adequate for the rough terrain. The locking mechanisms, surprisingly small, held firm, keeping the poles from collapsing as I moved through the canyon. One does not expect a great deal of innovation in a basic pole, but the inclusion of guides on both the middle and lower section made precision adjustments easy. The ergonomic pole grips were satisfactory, but some users may find them a bit small if they have larger hands. The synthetic material is sticky, and slippage was not a problem. In a hotter clime, however, they do induce sweat in the hands. I imagine their use in cooler temperatures or in wet environments might prove advantageous.
Lightweight and sturdy!
My first pair of hiking poles and they did not disappoint. I've been hiking for about 15 years now, mostly without poles, but I’ve been looking for a pair for a while to provide more stability and help with river crossings. Recently took this set on a few hikes in the San Bernardino mountains and I felt more confident while hiking on the rocky and uneven terrain. There is a push button on the top of the pole to adjust the strap length (it's plenty long) and two areas where you can adjust the height of the pole. If you are unsure of what pole height to set, the instructions booklet comes with a handy guide. They are lightweight enough (made of aluminum and weigh less than 1lb!!! ) that I would definitely take them on my next backpacking trip.
Great compact trekking poles!
Sturdy, light, and very easy to use/adjust. The grips are comfortable even for my smaller hands. Perfect when I'm on wildlife/wilderness photo adventures. I typically am hauling a backpack with lots of photo gear, so light and compact is key. These are so light that when they are hanging from my wrists while I'm shooting with my camera I barely even notice they are there. I also love that they fit well connected to my backpack. Lastly they feel really sturdy even when using on rocks and crossing creeks. Best poles I've used to date!
Wife-approved hiking poles
I'll be honest, I never used hiking poles...until I had a child. Now, with her in a hiking backpack it seems like it's important to use a set for two reasons. First, because she is a precious cargo, and second because she loves to lurch around in the backpack making extra stability valuable. The poles are fairly lightweight, they're heavier than carbon poles but I like the durability. They are sturdy with very limited flex. The pole adjustment system is easy to use with a latch system, and if the latch is too tight or too loose there is an easy screw that can be hand tightened (see my photo for the tightening screw which you don't see on the product page). The easy adjustment is nice for when my wife and I trade off baby carrying duties. My wife was hesitant about hiking poles in general, but after using them on a steeper scramble she is a convert as well! The grip is comfortable, but I wish it were a bit longer so it would fit with thick gloves, I like the poles enough that I'm planning on using them for skiing as well. The security straps are easy to tighten or loosen, pulling on the loose strap or the loop, but are secure when in use. Overall I'm very pleased with these poles. I took off a star for the grip size but would have given 4.5 stars if half stars were an option.
Lite indeed!
The Leki Journey Lite trekking poles live up to their name. I tested these out on a 8 mile hike with a 1600 feet elevation gain. They provided stability and were easy to carry when not in use. Height was easy to adjust quickly. And I liked the handles. It has a deeper finger notch for the index fingers which made it more comfortable to use. One minor note, because they are so light, you can feel the pole vibrate if you hit the ground too hard.
Light, sturdy, easy to adjust. Grips are slippery.
I took a chance and used these poles for the first time on a hike up and down Guadalupe Peak. It could have been a disaster, I'm not usually one to take untested gear on a big hike. But I couldn't have been happier as to how these performed and held up. They hardly look worn after a pretty grueling and rocky hike. They are very light and easy to collapse and clip to your pack when not in use. I like the clear height markings on them which make it easy to get them back to the same length every time you extend them. I am a heavier hiker who tends to lean on poles a lot on descents and these held up brilliantly. My only concern was the grip material. When my hands sweated, it got very slippery and difficult to keep a good grip. On the hike, I slapped some moleskin on the grips and that helped a lot. When I got home, I added some grip tape and athletic tape and found that to be much more stable and comfortable. My previous poles had cork grips and I think I preferred that, but with the addition of the tape, these are much more comfortable and worth the upgrade overall.
Good trekking poles, but not great
The pole is pretty study and made pretty well. It's made of aluminum, so not as light as what a carbon fiber would be. The handle is made of rubber and not cork. I personally like the cork option because I can see that on longer hikes, the rubber could cause blisters and it doesn't absorb sweat like the cork ones do. I like that you can adjust the height accordingly, but I prefer the Z style poles as they are easier and faster to be trail ready. With this pole, I have to fumble with adjusting the height on 2 levels and snap it in place. If the lock mechanism is loose, I would have to tighten the screw. The collapse length is 26" so it would be difficult to pack in to a check-in luggage. My other Leki poles collapses down to 15". It doesn't come with a carrying case or additional tips.
Functional and lightweight poles
Used these Leki poles recently in Desolation backpacking trip. Overall nice poles, light weight and solid locks. Usually I prefer cork handles as I have sweaty palms, but these Leki poles have synthetic handle material but a good design for ventilation. Used this over 38 miles in 2 nights n 3 days and it held solid.
Leki Journey Lite Trekking Pole as Support
The Leki Journey Lite Trekking Poles are that. They are lite, easy to adjust and fit the hand well. The only issues are 1) a rubber tip for the pole which I need to use since I use them as support in our home, is very expensive and 2) the extension lock is a bit weak when heavy pressure is applied to the top of the handle. These issues are likely not ones which are likely to interfere with their use on a trail however. Over all the Leki Poles are excellent.
1st pair I have bought and would buy them again
Easy to set up and take down Did not collapse under weight while using them Sales guy did give a good pointer told me if. If they did collapse under weight tighten them up a quarter turn
