Kept fogging up and the fog turns into condensation which freezes up. I let my brother borrow my $50 Amazon goggles. Neither he nor my sister’s goggles froze at all during the day. I want to note that in one run on Breck, the goggles iced up so bad coming down from Peak 6 that I swapped to the Photocromic lens… and that one also froze completely in the next 10 minutes.
I had to return the first pair due to the sticky silicone used on the strap to keep it from sliding off of the helmet melted off of it and all over my helmet. Seems it happened to another reviewer as well. Now the second pair I received has the same problem as you can see in the photo I attached. There is a lack of quality control. Very disappointing as they are great goggles otherwise.
This is the third(!) pair of I/O Mags I ordered from REI that were open box items. If you are going to sell a product for full price, at least sell a new product (or note that it's a return). The first pair's lens was scratched. The subsequent two pairs were fine but the boxes were destroyed and was an obvious rewrap of the product. Not sure if this is a Smith issue, an REI issue or a me issue, but it's very frustrating. I order primarily from REI and have only had this issue with these goggles. Haven't tried them yet to review otherwise.
I would give these goggles 5 stars because I love the design and how well the sun lens works, but the low-light lens tends to fog up with any moisture (such as a snowflake getting on the inside of the goggle). As soon as that happens, it is extremely difficult to remove the moisture. With a mask, occasionally the inner lens will fog up, but it is generally quick to dry.
I was surprised by how narrow the field of view was in these goggles. The lens looks large from the outside but frame and padding obstruct the view severely, especially around the nose. So a large part of that beautiful lens is just a decoration - you will never be able to look through it. Another disappointment was that while the "red mirror" lens rendered the terrain in great detail when looking away from the son, it produced lots of flare and reflections when the son was right in front of me. Much worse in that respect than my old goggles. I did not notice any issues with condensation, though I haven't used these goggle in inclement weather yet. Bottom line - not worth the price.
I saw these online and absolutely loved them. They came in and the lenses were perfectly clear and really enhanced my vision. My first time using them was on a perfect day with clear skies and the goggles worked lovely. The second day was very cold and snowy and these goggles fogged up so easily, I was very disappointed. The goggles fogged up and actually froze, leaving me to wander into the bathroom at the resort to use the hand dryers to dry them. They’re also very easily scratched as I took very good care of them only to realize after the first few uses they were already scratched in multiple places. I really wanted to love these but for the price I was very disappointed with the fogging and easy scratching. Under perfect conditions these goggles work great but ultimately I want goggles this pricey to work in the snowy conditions in which they’re advertised. I’d recommend Oakley flight decks or Anon WM3’s instead.
Quite disappointed with the goggles' performance. Skied in different conditions. The regular lens for sunny day gave me bad visibility as soon as I moved into a regular shadow - couldn't see anything on the trail - didn't notice any eaningful chromapop action. In a moderate snow storm switched to the pink/storm lens - same very poor performance - I had better visibility with my old Oakleys even in flat out white conditions. Fogging wasn't a major issue due to the ventilation, however on a windy day it let some wind with snow particles through - I checked the frame fit and it was pretty tight. So overall these are not worth the price paid and I want my money back.
I had a pair of Smith goggles that I LOVED which fell prey to a curious puppy. I thought I would stick with the brand since I had such good luck before and my last ones were so effortlessly perfect and in excellent condition (until puppy). I have a Smith helmet but these never felt like they fit. I would end up with an ice cream headache while skiing and these did fog up. I used them 3 times and they got a bad scratch, they wouldn't stay on my helmet. UGH. Returned :(
Both lenses it was sold with had defects and were unusable. They were so hazy that I couldn't see through them. Looking online, this is a common defect with the product. The product overall looks great, but until Smith fixes this issue with the lenses, I recommend steering clear.
Recently got these with a new Smith helmet and they are great. The optics are great and I appreciated having two lenses to swap for overcast and sunny days. The lenses are very easy to change. I had zero fogging issues with these goggles. Highly recommend.
