It's awesome! I buy it for my dad and husband and we went to Rocky Mountain during winter. It was snowing and the trails are slippery, but it keeps you warm and it can handle slope equal or less than 45 degree very well. However, it you going to a slope more than 50 degree, and full of ice, the shoes are still good, but since too slippery, you need to have some more equipment like snow spikes for your safety. But my husband still climb to 9900 ft Dream Lake.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These are my first pair of snow boots, and I'm so glad I went with Chilkats. Based on the recommendations from other reviewers, I ordered a half size larger than my usual sneaker size. With lots of leg and ankle support, they're really really comfy. If it weren't for the super warm insulation, I'd walk around all day in them! I'm looking forward to showing the snow who's boss this season. Thank you North Face!
Very warm, and waterproof, when i first got them! I was singing their praises. I do not use them often as i live in Kentucky and we don't get a lot of snow often. However after owning them for 3 or 4 years ( i cannot remember exactly). I went to put them on for sledding today and one of them had completely separated from the upper, rendering them useless. Maybe i am expecting too much but for only using them may 15-20 times max, it was quite disappointing to find out there was nothing The North Face would do for me. Not repairable, not exchangeable, nothing, just out of luck. If your looking for a 1 or 2 year pair of boots, i am sure they are good, but they are definitely not a high end piece of gear that you can keep for a long time. What a bummer.
These boots did not work for me at all on two hikes in the winter snow at Snoqualmie Pass in Washington. I bought a size 10 and the fit was good with room to wiggle my toes a bit and secure along the heal and sides. The problem is that the vertical lacing stops at just below the ankle and lacing does not proceed forward along the length of the foot. Under relatively moderate inclines, no problem to lace tight and the foot is immobilized. But in more steep situations and because you cannot immobilize the foot completely, be prepared to lose your big toe nails. As such, these boots are not recommended.
Have had several North Face products over the years and though expensive, they always were top quality. In this case, I bought a lace up pair of these boots for myself in Michigan and a few years later a slip-on pair for my Dad in Illinois. Both pairs were only worn for snow shoveling or snow blowing in the winter...maybe a dozen times per year? Evidence provided by the limited wear shown on the soles. Both pairs stored in our cool basements out of season, out of the sun...and both pairs similarly had their lowers crack and fall apart on their own. One spring when put away for the season they are fine...next fall they are cracked and falling apart. Both pairs were bought from REI who used to provide excellent customer service where if you were ever unhappy with a product regardless of age, you could return it for a refund...not anymore. They had me contact North Face directly. I filled out the required paperwork, paid over $25 to send them to North Face, and they returned them with no admission that they had a manufacturing or material issue. Lowers on all varieties of the current boots seem to be identical to the older ones I have...and a replacement pair I bought. Judge for yourself based on the pictures and above if these boots and the company are where you want to spend your hard-earned money...and if you want to risk having your boots blow out on an excursion.
I've had my Chilkats for about 7 years and use for a number of purposes (hiking, shoveling, ice-fishing). They were great to start with but now have issues. The rubber has cracks and has now become completely separated from the upper leather portion. They are unusable and I have to buy new ones.
This boot was only used less than 10 times over a few years, but the synthetic rubber tore while driving. This isn't meant for longevity in case that's your purpose. It's a shame as the boot pretty much looks new and was really warm and comfortable.
The boots are warm but in light snow or rain the right side pulls in water and becomes uncomfortable quickly. I also can feel the edges of the insole on one side, it seems they are often installed haphazardly.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I personally am happy with my boots, i went into the store try them on and then order them online love how they feel im a size 10 and cant wait to try them on the snow , PS THEY ARE REALLY WARM I LOVE THAT
Sizing winter boots has been quite challenging. I wear a 10.5 medium width athletic shoe / 44.5 cycling shoe. I tried many brands and sizes including LL Bean, KEEN, Columbia, Muck, and a few more. Boots like this can feel stiff so I prefer thicker wool socks for added cushion and insulation. An 11.5 was snug but not too tight (like the 11) and gave me enough wiggle room in the toe box. When I finally got outdoors with them, I found them warm and comfortable walking around for more than two hours through slush and snow on trails and streets. They are quick to slip on and lace up, quick to unlace and slip off. I am very satisfied with them.
