Thule WingBar Edge Review - Can impede sunroof
We bought this for our new SUV with raised edge rails. There are no issues, and it looks great. My husband and I chose the Thule WingBar Edge because we liked its low profile, and it was confirmed that it would fit our vehicle. The rack itself fits, but once we added our Thule box on top, the claw clamps that attach the box do not provide enough clearance to use our sunroof. It scrapes along the glass, causing potential exterior or motor damage. Therefore, we are quite disappointed about that. In hindsight, I wish we could switch to another option. Design-wise, I’m not a big fan of the visible exposed rubber strap for a rack at this price point.
Not what I expected
I've been a fan of Thule for decades, using their square crossbars and roof boxes exclusively. When I got my latest car (Toyota Sienna), I had to change to a new type of crossbar. The Thule WingBar Edge was the only recommended fit. I prefer overhanging bars, which these are not available in. The box arrived from Fed Ex shredded in half. Inside the feet were exceptionally long, taking up a large portion of the usable space for the bars. Assembly now requires installing springs and cutting something - though I never got that far. I packed it up and sent it back. Also, the keys were missing from the box. Pretty disappointing, especially considering the price tag.
Hello Robin, I'm sorry to hear your Thule Raised Rail Edge and WingBar Edge system did not live up to your expectations. The side rail shape of many model years of Toyota Sienna means they are no not compatible with the standard Thule Raised Rail Evo system. The Thule WingBar Edge system does have a shorter overall mounting space than the Thule WingBar Evo system, but still allows enough room for most Thule rooftop accessories, and maintains the same weight capacity. Installation requires attaching the feet to the bar and installing the top QuickAccess strip. Also, this roof rack does not include lock cylinders out of the box, but they are available as an optional accessory.
It is easy to install
Installation instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Definitely recommend buying the locks (extra cost) to protect your purchase. I purchased this as a package that came with two crossbars. I would appreciate it if there were an additional instruction on which one goes with the front (Reddit said the longer one at the front) and which one goes to the back, because the lengths for the two bars are different. One thing I would like to point out, when car traveling speed is over 30 mph, the wing noise will sound (it's noticeable). If you can't take the noise, Thule's hitch platform is a great alternative (I use both).
Very Nice
The Thule WingBar Edge roof rack system looks and works great on my truck. I was looking for a flush mount system (I didn't want bars sticking out beyond the roof rails). If you want high quality and a great raised rail system, I recommend you consider buying. I am glad I bought the WingBar Edge system. On a side note, it would have been nice if the instructions clarified that the strap tightening doesn't use the Thule click system.
Streamlined and easy to install
So far so good, although haven’t hit the highway over 70kph yet. They look great, and are easy to install on the roof of my Subaru—I’m 5’4” for reference. Hopefully easy to uninstall when we need to hit the car wash. Remember to note which end of your car is wider, mine required two different lengths. And tighten after 50k.
Great product!
I got my Thule crossbars a few weeks ago. They were shipped out to me at lightning speed. I installed them in a short time, really straight-forward install. I have had them on my 4Runner since, and I love the sturdiness, and the look! Very pleased!
Way Better than I expected!
My first time buying a Thule product and install was Super easy, very happy with the product.
Real nice
They go on super easy and have the least road noise of any rack I’ve owned.
Returned Items: Unsuccessful Functionality
Encountered Challenges and Returned the Items: Incompatibility Issues with Both Rails and Car. Despite the setback, the support from REI fell short, providing minimal assistance. The only guidance received was a recommendation to explore alternative options compatible with the specific car model.
Streamlined and minimalistic!
Great upgrade from an older footpack/aero bar set up I had on my VW Alltrack. Wanted something recessed that would still fit all of my Thule accessories and couldn't be happier. Easy install and solid! Remember to torque after 50km and 500km. Had to tighten a little but impressed they were only 1 spin loose. Pretty low profile, can't use my sunroof but I have a Thule box on top 24/7 so never used it anyways! Less road noise than the old set up and I already see an increase in fuel economy. Highly recommend!
