Great
I’ve had this rack for over a year now, I will say it’s an amazing rack and is very sturdy. One thing they really nailed is time to load and unload the rack, literally seconds to load and unload. I’ve driven thousands of miles with road / gravel / mountain bikes on the back and no issue, never worried once about a bike falling. Only negatives I have are: - This thing is heavy, all that sturdiness doesn’t come for free - Light connection needs grease regularly or can corrode. - Expensive, but you get what you pay for. Pivot Note: I also have the Kuat pivot , it works great. Only negative is it makes the car long. It’s also less rigid than the piston pro.
Kuat has another winner
Great rack with integrated extended tail light extension with magnetic cable management. Only Kuat does this kind of easy to use innovation. And can’t go with their world class customer service of Kuat and REI.
Bombproof Bike Rack
I wanted to replace an aging Thule hitch bike rack that I purchase from REI in 2005. Nothing was wrong with it but I am using it with the Ski and Snowboard Rack attachment. The problem with that rack is when using it with my Jeep Wrangler, I am not able to open the back door even though it is hinged and swings out of the way...but not far enough. Same problem with my Suburban and opening the back hatch....I am unable to open it with the bike rack on. I decided to purchase this bike rack because of the ability to pivot the rack backward at an angle, ease of mounting the bikes on the rack, secure fit in the hitch and the brake/turn signal lights. The pistons used for the front and rear wheel locks are genius. It takes seconds to secure the bike to the rack. I recently drove 15 hours at speeds up to 90mph and the bikes were rock solid on the rack. No swaying, no bouncing, no movement what so ever. The included security cable is THICK and long enough to secure the bikes in a figure 8 - frame, front wheel and back wheel. The bike rack components are all metal - impressive!! The finish/coating is top notch. No scratches or wear observed so far. I was concerned at first with the price but am very satisfied in the end. There is nothing like this on the marked currently that meets my needs. This bike rack is bombproof and I think it will last forever.
Great with one exception
Really like this rack but beware of one big issue ARMS WILL NOT LOCK BELOW FREEZING IF THERE IS ANY MOISTURE. I had to take long extension cord and wife’s hairdryer into driveway to warm up the latches. I called Kuat and they confirmed this is a known issue that they are studying. In the meantime they recommend keeping a can of aerosol de-icer in your vehicle. This rack costs a ton and they should’ve resolved a basic issue like this prior to releasing.
Beautiful rack with fragile powder coat
Beautiful rack that seems top notch with one flaw…first time I put a bike on my rack I loaded a fat bike with studded tires. Was simply testing the fit, which was perfect. Didn’t even transport the bike. When I took the bike off there were deep scratches through the powder coat down to bare metal. Would have thought the powder coat could handle that. Have used a competitors rack with the same bike and tires for a couple of years now without issues. Seriously concerned about rust issues now. Expected more out of a “premium” product at this price point.
Pricey, but worth every penny
Yes, they are pricey. But this Kuat Piston Pro X 2-bike rack is bombproof. The setup is pretty simple, with the tools provided. Lighting system is flawless and I don’t have to worry about my car’s tail lights being blocked. This is my first bike rack, and I didn’t want to have something flimsy with my fancy road bike, wondering if it would be in the middle of the freeway at some point. The hydraulic arms work easily and firmly, securing my ride. Of note…and not a flaw by Kuat. I have to disarm my backup avoidance alarm each time I turn on the car, or it screams at me. 🤷🏻♂️. Not a dealbreaker.
Bad execution of a good idea.
When it works it’s great. Sadly in one year of ownership I can say it fails in snow and ice, the ratchet portion of the kashima slides won’t connect and you’ll be unable to ratchet down on a tire. They’re answer is to always keep the rack clean and dry (don’t use outside I guess). Also the wiring fails and they send you a replacement wiring setup but you’ll need to completely rebuild and wire tbe rack. These seem like recall issues. If you wanna drop 1400 on a rack you can’t get ice or mud on or want to rebuild it occasionally this is your rack.
Cheap Metal Construction.
I am not sure about this. A tab used to insert into the slot when constructing the bike rack broke off after we set it in place. Seems like cheap pot aluminum. If that's the case not sure the rack is up to suitable use to haul bikes on Forest Service roads. For the price we pay for these things I expected something mote robust. A major disappointment.
Challenging/fiddly assembly
Beware - this rack is incredibly difficult to assemble. The "Easy Clip" system for the trays is fiddly, and the trays don't seat well in the center "stack." After a couple failed attempts to seat the trays, the "EasyClip Teeth" wear down/break off and the tray must be manually held flush while the thru-bolt is inserted. Keeping these trays flush in this way is quite difficult, as they are imbalanced and easy to wobble. The cables to run the lights are very "in the way" during the installation of trays C and D. This is a two person job with lots of fiddling and forcing things. Highly recommend getting REI to assemble this for you.
overpriced, and defective
I purchased this bike rack with high expectations given the price, and it failed. The pivot mechanism became loose after just one use, which means the rack was incredibly wobbly. I contacted Kuat, and they were very kind. They replaced the central system, but not the entire rack, which means I have to take apart everything, including parts that were pre-assembled, and reassemble using the new parts they sent. For a bike rack of that cost that failed over one use. I would expect more.
