Comfortable fitting MTB Shoes, Easy adjustment
This shoe is quite comfortable. I really like the BOA fit knob, it allows me to tighten and loosen the shoes very precisely. Another nice thing about the BOA is that you can do the adjustment very fast and on the fly While riding I was able to tighten or loosen by just a click or two at the top of the pedal stroke with barely any delay in pedaling. The velcro strap at the toe is a nice feature too, allowing more adjustment forward of the boa string. The sole seems very thick and good for traction though I have only ridden on Dry ground since we have had no moisture. The shoe is true to size at a 44 it fits me very well. I ride with no socks most of the time on the trails unless I am doing much longer rides, then I add socks. There will still be room for socks so it's no problem. The interior is plenty plush for my no sock riding. Some shoes are too plasticky inside to go no socks. I would like a reflector on the back heel though, I think thats the only thing missing.
Nonsense all around bike shoe
I recently purchased a gravel bike after 20 years of mountain biking, I was ready for something lighter and road friendly for bikepacking. These shoes were great. I have used them on the road, gravel and a little bit on single track. They are comfortable. Easy to use and adjust. I did a bit of hiking on the single track and had no issues with slipping or feeling uncomfortable. After such a long time in mountain bike shoes, these felt a little narrow at first but I got use to them. I have only had Pearl iZUMi and will continue to use their excellent shoes.
Small and narrow
These shoes seemed to run very small compared to other bike shows I’ve worn with the same stated size. I found the toe box to be incredibly narrow and the shoes to be too stiff to use for anything other than road biking. The bottoms of the shoes are extremely slippery on any hard surfaces and I almost wiped out on the concrete in our garage. Overall the shoes were to narrow and painful for my feet to try for more than one ride. If you have narrow feet they’re worth a try just make sure you try on in store before purchasing due to the weird sizing
Good shoe, sizing is tough
These shoes seem like a great product, but sizing is a little tricky. I normally wear a 43.5 shoe, but noticed that these shoes only come in whole sizes. I decided to order a size down for a performance fit, but the 43 was much too small. So, I haven't had a chance to really test these out on the trail and see how they handle with a bike under them. I have noticed that they take a cleat well, and it's recessed a bit into the shoe. This makes walking around on a trail or a road a lot easier than I find in my road shoes, which do not have that recessed cleat spot. That being said, the sole is pretty slippery, especially on smooth floors. They're reasonably stiff, like you'd want a bike shoe to be, and the lacing system is quick and works well. They seem a little stiff around the front of the ankle, but I think that would go away with some breaking in.
Next stop, offroad adventures!
A comfortable shoe for your next gravel or offroad adventure. The Boa system is quick and customizable for any foot! Easy adjustment while on the go, just spin the wheel and snug those shoes. My only complaint is that the PEARL iZUMi sizing guide suggested 44, but 45 would probably have been better. So if you have wide feet, better go slightly larger.
Mostly good, but hard to recommend
These shoes get a lot of things right, but miss the mark on a few important things. First, the good. These shoes are some of the most comfortable I've tried--they almost feel as comfy as a good pair of slippers. The heel retention is also great: I never felt like my foot was at risk of slipping out of the shoe. The sole is flexible in a way that makes walking feel fairly natural, though it does mean you feel the cleat and pedal more than you would on a stiffer shoe. I prefer a stiffer outsole for cycling shoes that distributes the pressure of the pedal a bit better, but I could see the flexibility being nice in some cases. These also handled a range of a temperatures pretty well since the fall here has given me weather from the 40s to the 80s (though I did need some shoe covers for the rides in the 40s). But there are two things that aren't great with this shoe. The first is the rubber on the outsole: on concrete it felt like it had no grip. Maybe that will change with wear, but feeling like I could potentially slip and slide on flat ground made we wary of walking on anything I might encounter on a trail. The second is that the rubber on the forefoot interferes with clipping in. I've been riding clipless pedals for years and was using new cleats with fairly new pedals but found it difficult to clip in and on a few occasions was unpleasantly surprised to find that I was clipped in as securely as I had thought. Again, maybe that will get better with wear, but it's hard to want to find out.
A gravel shoe I consider good enough for the road
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Right out of the box, these shoes were clearly a good combination of road and mountain bike qualities. The shoe fit very similarly to a good quality road shoe but had a bit more rigidity and stoutness like a typical mountain shoe. The BOA lacing created a very uniform support around the entire foot. I made a point of walking in these for extended periods to mimic hiking or carrying a bike longer distances. The shoe felt comfortable and conforming in various conditions. The one draw back of note is the solid plastic sole and tread, which proved slippery in various situations, including walking over larger rocks. Overall, I would consider this a great everyday shoe and would wear it in road rides as well if they had clip connections for other than mountain spd.
Nice and Stiff
Really like these shoes! I’ve only worn them for indoor cycling on my Peloton, and they are absolutely fantastic. Incredibly stiff and sturdy under foot and the boa system doesn’t cause any sort of weird pressure points on the top of my foot. Compared to my last pair of cycling shoes, these have more sole, so they’re much easier to walk in with the clips than other cycling shoes I’ve had in the past. Asthetucally I love the color and overall feel of the material. They’re very smooth! If there was one downside, is that they’re thick material. Great for a colder weather cycling shoe, but could get hot. I don’t have this issue with my bike in my garage, but I could see it being an issue.
Comfortable at first until tongue moves
Used them to ride in the city, single track, and indie trainer. They are comfortable at first and easy to walk in. The tongue shifts towards the inside of the feet after continuous use, causing discomfort.
Me Likey
Took a 30mile ride with these kicks. Replacing a very similar shoe from 15 years ago in the same size. My ride was with weather in the 55 degree range. Wondering with minimal venting if my foot foot will be swimming in a pool of sweat during a normal summer ride. Foot box is narrow which fits my foot well but even a bit snug for me. The tightening harness is handy and convenient for adjusting while riding. Curious if the Boa system will hold up for another 15 years
