Smartwool  Intraknit Thermal Merino Base Layer 3/4 Bottoms - Men's

The fabric feels like it would be quite warm despite being a lower rated weight. The articulation and venting look well placed. However, the fit doesn't work for me. The waist is quite high and the length goes well below my calves, which puts it well inside my ski boot. Even if you are not concerned with the extra fabric inside your ski boot, I don't see the point of a 3/4 length that only exposes your achilles and ankles. It's possible that this runs a little large and I should be in a medium. However, I'm a solid large and this is supposed to be ""fitted"" Overall I really like smartwool, but this one needs to go back to the drawing board.

Purchased for skiing, mainly mammoth mountain. Waist band sits way too high making it terribly uncomfortable. Sags in the crotch. Just purchased last week. Tried to exchange for the merino classic using the ""Go Far. Feel good. "" guarantee. It says, ""So, if for any reason you aren't completely happy with your Smartwool gear within 2 years of purchasing, we'll get you into some new gear. No problem"". Well, I tried this, and they said the warranty only covers defects"". This is plainly false advertising. Plenty of other good companies with merino offerings. I have a family of 6 and will not purchase any smartwool products until this is corrected.

These 3/4 bottom layer are great, they fit perfectly and are true to size. I use this at my first layer next to skin bottom during my backcountry splitboard hikes and works perfectly. I stayed completely warm and dry the entire time, occasionally opening up my 3L hardshell side vents to exhaust out any excess heat buildup. While I was doing this I noticed that the base layer was completely dry so it was perfect. I also like that these are 3/4 length, there was absolutely no bunching up in my splitboard boots or between the bottom of this layer and my socks. Great product, thank you!

The feel & fit are great, and I like that it's a true 3/4, short enough to stay out of a ski boot, unlike some other brands. Also, they're not kidding around with the cool and cold ratings here. Maybe I run a little hot, but these are honestly a little too warm for most of my ski days, and I'd rate them int the < 25 category only. I'm sure I'll appreciate them on the really cold days, though. Plus all the standard benefits of all Smartwool products in terms of odor resistance, effective wicking, and plush comfort.

Similar to my review of the intraknit vest, the inseam of this product is miles away from fitting me. The leg portion goes well into my calf which then goes into a skit boot. The waist goes well past and over my belly button. I'm 5'7"" with a short inseam of 28"" so I realize I'm out of the average. Even so, no pants go that high over a waist for men. Just really disappointed with fit design overall. Fabric is thick, so only for really cold outings. A bit on that rough side too but i expect it to soften with use.

I bought my first pair of these in preparation for hiking the pacific crest trail, and loved them so much that I now use these as a base layer at work. I'm a snow maker at a ski resort and regularly spend hours at a time in cold, snowy/ wet and windy conditions. These can go several days of intense use before the slightest odor and are warm while not being bulky. One of my favorite parts of the day while on trail was getting to camp and being able to slide these one. They keep their shape/ fit much longer before sagging than any other wool base layer I've tried. My only complaint is that where the inner thighs rub together, the fabric seems to be wearing down more quickly than I'd like considering the price premium. I've started wearing compression shorts underneath and that seems to have helped.

I've got about 10 ski days on these so far and I like them pretty well. I like the SmartWool blends they feel great, and don't stretch out too much. These work well in colder and warmer weather. I like the high waist also. However, I don't understand why there isn't a fly and maybe a bit more elastic at the cuffs? The legs tend to ride up on hikes a bit sometimes. However, the fly thing is my only real gripe otherwise I like them a lot. I would repurchase this if they added the fly.

Great product. I use as my base layer for Alpine and Back Country Skiing. Very warm, dries quickly, doesn't smell. My issue: the waist is cut extremely high. It's like your Grampa's pants that he wore up by his belly button. I know of no men who wear athletic items that high. My solution is to fold the waist band over itself, but even then it's ""inseam"" is a bit long. Remember, these are really meant for ""active"" wear. Hope they can improve the cut in the future.

I replaced my poly base layer with these. I love them for the feel, as they're quite comfortable and plenty warm. The flexibility is great and doesn't limit mobility. Negatives: The waist rides quite high. Like, cover up a pot belly high. I prefer a high waist so it can't drop too low when I bend over or squat, but these are almost comically high. These are supposed to be 3/4 length, but they sit about a hand's length above the ankle. They dont interfere much with my boot, but I'd rather it not even be a concern. My biggest gripe is no functional fly. I feel like this should be a standard for a men's base layer. Combine that with the super high waist and it makes things more cumbersome than necessary. Overall I still feel these are an upgrade over my last base layer, so I'm happy with them, but I feel like some small tweaks could make a big impact.

I own multiple pairs of the 3/4 classic merino bottoms and they are great for skiing where you don't want extra material down inside your ski boot. They have been durable and warm. I tried the Intraknit version in the same size (large) and they seemed like a full size smaller. I returned them before I ever used them so can't speak to their warmth or durability but the fabric did seem thinner.
