5 stars for handling the cold minus 2 for zipper
So I wore this coat when Chicago was hit with -15 to -25 windshield. I walked outdoors - flat terrain - brisk walk for 35 minutes. Towards the end I was unzipping this coat because I was that warm in it. If you ever lived in Chicago, our winters suck and get miserably cold. One caveat, it was very cold but it was sunny and that helps. Today I wore it in 20 degree weather, gray skies. Perfectly comfortable. So the coat does its job. However, I still cannot zip this coat! Today I only snapped it. I was warm but the coat should zip. Likely will end up returning it in hopes that next years design will fix this (fire the person who designed it) zipper!
Zipper defect makes heavy, warm jacket unwearable
PROS: Warm, fashionable, lots of pockets both inside and out, hooded, reputable brand. CONS: Zipper is so finicky it renders the jacket "unzippable" (so you can only button it), heavy (not great for traveling) I wanted to love this jacket from my trip from the Southeast USA to Norway, despite its heavy weight (for traveling on planes and walking with a carry-on backpack). However, I was never able to even zip the jacket at all, which makes this a no-go for me. I'm not sure if it's a manufacturing defect or if I'm just not doing it correctly. I have had other double-zip jackets before, though, and I never had a problem with those. Sadly, I have to return this jacket.
Underperforms in Cold Temps
This is the least functional parka I’ve ever worn. I expected it to be much warmer. I took it out during the Bomb Cyclone week in Minneapolis when a blizzard hit for days and temps never got above zero. Windchill was negative double digits all week. Usually I get a little warm and sweaty while exercising outdoors, even in cold temps. Not so with this jacket. While the waterproof and windproof features are nice, the insulated layer is nothing more than polyester. The synthetic fur hood does little to add warmth. Maybe it performs better in places with milder winters. However, this is going straight back to REI. Thank you REI for your awesome return policy! I won't be stuck with an expensive parka that does not work.
Stay Warm in a Fjallraven Women's Nuuk Pro!
I had purchased a previous winter jacket that had heat reflection technology in its internal fabric. I wore it once going from my house to my mailbox in 19 degrees and froze. Needless to say, that jacket was returned that night and I went straight to REI, tried on this jacket and knew immediately that this jacket would absolutely keep me warm! It fits perfectly. It is made incredibly well. It is comfortable and I can actually zip it on the first try - sometimes hard to do with 3/4 lengths coats. And oh the pockets! Love em! I've been wearing it everyday since in 12 to 32 degrees and I'm toasty! The price reflects the quality and I take comfort in knowing this coat should last me a lifetime.
Love this jacket, zipper is tricky
This jacket kept me warm during a trip to MN with a recent dip in the temperatures (-35 with wind chill), and is wonderful for any seriously cold day or night. The zipper is tricky, and I do wish it were not a nylon one… especially for such a pricey coat! Besides the zipper, which sticks and can be hard to seat correctly, I expect this coat to last for years. I am just planning to replace the zipper when I can’t stand it anymore or it breaks. It is definitely oversized, but I like it that way for lots of layering and comfort. I bought a small (my normal size), but I could easily have sized down.
Mixed Feelings
Pro: pockets. Great pockets. Wish the pocket design on every coat out there. It would be a perfect jacket world. Cons: zipper is difficult. Considering returning it because of the zipper. Shouldn't take 5 minutes to zipper up. Hoping I'll figure out some sort of trick and it will click. The other thing I don't like is that the faux fur is a bit much. I'm imagining people looking at me with my hood up and disliking the gigantic goofy fur halo running amock around my head. Had to order down a size to XS and it will still most definitely fit a thick fleece/sweater. If it holds up to Chicago winters, will update.
The one and only winter jacket you need
I just got the jacket last week and have immediately put it to use in the super wintery weather in Alberta Canada. Got me through the subzero temperatures, gusty wind and snow. Very well-built and I feel like wearing a blanket out in the cold in a good way. Love it covers my bottom and the very generous sized hood. I also love it that it's a loose fit so one can layer underneath. I got it on REI sale not sure why only the yellow color is on sale but I think this is well worth it compared to paying 3 times as much for a Canada Goose jacket. I am sure this will serve me well for the years to come.
Finally warm!
I live in Wisconsin where the windchills drop to the negative numbers. I was looking for coat to keep me warm without down. So far I have been comfortable, but not necessarily toasty in weather up to -20. This is a huge improvement over any other coat I have owned. I love the pockets, especially the ones made to keep your hands warm. I don't mind the zipper; yes, it is a tad tricky, but so worth the warmth. The hood annoys me a bit when it is behind my back while I am driving, still worth it. Do take the advice to buy a size down. I am normally a small, 5'7" 130 lbs but a XS fits with room to spare, even while wearing a sweater and fleece underneath.
Not What It Once Was...
I purchased this jacket in December of 2024 and a second one for my daughter in February of 2025 and the jackets are like day and night. The first one was just what you would expect when spending $500 and I did because we were going to Finland. The second one arrived and I noticed immediately that it was significantly lighter in weight (by approx a pound), it was shorter and the hood was several inches less deep. The labels on the jackets told me that the first one was made in Vietnam and the second was made in China. When I spend that much on an item I expect what I promised and what I pay for. I also expect consistency. REI... I also didn't expect to get hassled when I went to return my online order. Having been a faithful member of REI for decades, I will be making all of my future purchases elsewhere.
Functional, warm winter coat for cold Maine days
I researched different jackets for a while before visiting a store and trying one on. It does run large with a significant difference between the small and medium. I am living in central Maine so warmth and water resistance were big factors along with the overall look. so far I have warn it with a long sleeve tshirt under and I am plenty warm in 20 degree weather. Zipper is a typical double zipper that needs to be seated properly. Pockets are wonderful especially the fleece lined torso pockets. Hood is oversized which might be good for snowy days.
