Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Altra Olympus 5 Fresh out of the box first-time use did a 19.2-mile hike and tread is coming apart. Overall very much like the shoe have gone through several Altra Olympus 4's each lasting many trail miles over one year. First time wearing the Altra Olympus 5 and the tread is peeling off.

Super comfortable for 70 miles, then fell apart

After destroying a pair of Olympus 4s under 100 miles, I bought these. I figured it was a fluke and wanted to try the new version. The shoes have excellent traction, are super comfortable, and I ran a PR half marathon in them BUT the outsoles are falling off in nine different places after just 70miles. I generally run gravel roads with some more intense hikes and peak bags on the weekends but per Strava I've only logged 70 miles in these shoes since august. They fell apart on a rocky hike this weekend but the only 10 people in my group had zero issues. Altra refused to warranty the Olympus 4s, saying the damage was outside of normal use (also trail running), hopefully they are willing to help this time! (Purchased from a local running store)

Wanted to love them more but they fell apart within 5 days

Altra certainly know how to design a comfortable long distance hiking shoe but they have failed with durability. I've tried and tested nearly every model of Altra trail shoes and enjoyed them for their comfort but the soles on these Olympus started peeling off on the third day. By day five and less than 100 miles in whole sections were coming off. Not good when hiking a long distance trail. Also, the material on one of the inner heals wore though in 5 days and there were holes at the ankles. Altra please use better quality materials for your most expensive shoes and for heavens sake find a better glue.

Outsole tread peeling off after less than 60 miles

Pretty bummed these started falling apart after 60 miles of use. I was pretty happy to purchase my first pair of Olympus’ after hearing so much of their comfort and durability over the years. Pretty comfortable but couldn’t have missed the mark harder in terms of durability. Maybe a bad batch? Whatever the case, not a shoe for rugged trails and certainly not the mountains. Curious to know how long these even would’ve lasted on gentle terrain or pavement.

Additional information to previous review

Okay after wearing the Olympus 5 for two weeks and several day hikes with pack on I experienced pain on the top of my foot right where the big toe metatarsal joint is ( high point) the new thicker tongue has a seam there but I'm not sure that's the issue exactly as inside the tongue seems smooth and padded. I have returned the pair in my usual size and I ordered a half size larger. I haven't had them long enough to experience the sole separation issue but I'll have shoe goo ready if it does. I certainly will not take them backpacking until I know I can trust them. I can see the sole design change that may have lead to the weakness. I'm including some photos comparing my old 4 pair ( has 600 miles on the 4) and the new Olympus 5 both the same size. The 5 looks smaller for sure. Notice the difference in the tongue , lacing, sole.

Not durable

I am a an avid hiker. When not thru hiking, I average 6-8 miles a day on a mixture of dirt and rock trails and paved paths. I love the Olympus 5. I hiked the AT in Olympus 4. The show is a perfect fit for me, but, like these other reviews, the quality just isn't there. The vibrant outsole needs to cover more of the bottom of the shoe. The mid sole spongy material wears out way too quick. The lining of the heel has worn out and has holes at about 200 miles. Great shoe Altra but tou need to improve the quality and longevity. Way to expensive for a 200 mile shoe.

If it ain't broke...

Ive owned every model of Olympus, some multiple pairs. On a thru hike attempt of AT in 2021 avgd 500 miles for three pairs. The first pair did all of NH and Maine. The roughest part of trail. The soles kinda worn but still good. The second pair Have 200 miles of AT fom Springer to clingmans dome 200 miles and about 200 road miles and everyday wear. Still good. Third pair have 165 AT miles springer to fontana dam. They are falling apart. Sole delaminating and uppers worn heavily. I do not see them lasting another 165 miles. They are way to tight. I have to basically leave the laces as loose as possible to prevent them from hurting my feet resulting in a floppy fit.. The hard toe protector is gone. A big negative. There is no way i can recommend the new version. New Hampshire and Maine will shred these on the granite. Altra, why continuously change the good designs you have? Ive owned timps, olympus and lone peaks from various years. The early models were bomber. The new models seem to change without regard to performance and result in less of a shoe. It's a harsh review but born from experience. They are too expensive for this low quality. I'm sad that i have to search for a new shoe. Bring back the original olympus. The maroon amd grey. Bring back the green timps. The two beat shoes ever made.

Tore apart after 60 miles of easy ultra training

Tore apart lugs of the VIBRUM sole and the ankle support fabric fell apart. Disappointed my 3rd pair of altras and the same happened to my 4s wished they fixed it because they are the only zero drop shoe company... for the price I was very upset with the shoe and customer service as they told me they may be able to help out with a warranty. Going to try the "mont blonc boas" as they may be more durable but still for the price I'm upset. Seems a lot have this same issue. Praying my bloncs hood up as I love altra just the quality of duability is not there

Fell apart after first wear.

One of the most comfortable trail shoes I've ever owned. I was looking forward to enjoying them throughout the summer. Unfortunately, the shoe fell apart after the first wear. What a bummer!

Bigfoot200 Approved

I recently use these shoes fot 180 miles on the Bigfoot200. I used them over the blast zone in Saint Helens. Sure they got a few cuts from volcanic rock. All material will. The tread wore amazing over a variety of surfaces. They have 2 holes in inside where my blister on outside of heals gave them a blister. But overall I can't complain and highly recommend this shoe for long distance over rough terrain. They are shoes they get worn on hard surfaces. Unless you have spray on shoes like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. There's not another shoe on market that will drain when wet, and hold up to trails, with that comfort of open toe and breathable materials.

Serious durability issues

I've had every generation of Olympus....this generation is not holding up. The tread is separating after less than 100 trail miles...and I already had to use glue to fix a separation between the upper and the soles. In all the years I've worn Altra shoes...I've never bitched...just made my own repairs....but quality of the materials in this generation are sub par. For the prices Altra is commanding....I just won't play that game. Get your act together.
