An investment, but one that’s worth it. It’s hard to make a financial decision of spending so much on one article of clothing, but I wear this nearly every day and find it’s worth the cost. I initially bought the coat for a trip to Scotland where it was expected to be extremely cold in the highlands, and the heavy rain there the first few days did not feel too bad at all with this on. Hardly need to layer more than a shirt under the coat. It does get pretty warm quickly in it, so I expect to use it only on actual really cold days, I picked up a pretty big sweat with it on when going for a 4 mile walk and the sun being out (barely, it’s still winter). So it’s nice for just really cold days if you’re being active with it on.
I just received my Thorium Hoody to replace Alpha Lightweight jacket because Alpha has thin lining and relese down to fleece and this Thorium is so tight, I can berly bend arm and fit hands in to pockets and also loose thread and actually some of trim not sawn on to jacket, its possible that this jacket was pulled to control and dumped back to wrong pile before tags were insawned, but still there should be no loose or unsawn parts. This goes goes back today, I am very upset, Im gonna have to wait for refund and order again. This is third time I have to return items for quality issues in last 3 months
I was expecting this Thorium Hoody to be a major step up in warmth and comfort after reading its reviews and price tag. Sure, it's nice but at best only slightly warmer than my two Atom AR hoodies. My principal gripe though, is about the cuffs. The Thorium lacks the extended elasticized cuffs and instead has a 1/4 inch elastic band, allowing cold air to enter the sleeves at times. The elasticized cuff of the Atom AR (and LT) is one of the best and smartest features of any jacket I've ever worn. This feature should be on every Arcteryx jacket intended for warmth. No excuses.
I previously owned the Cerium hoody which I really loved for it's as advertised weight to warmth ration. Certainly the Throium Hoody is a beefed up version of this down and for sure is more of a standalone coat. The issue I've had with this piece and the down insulated Beta AR jacket I recently returned is that the waist is super tapered. I'm 5'7 and 150lbs with broader shoulders and a 30 inch waste and still the fit was so snug and rides up when you bend over. Perhaps most disappointingly it was not as warm as I expected. The quality seemed really solid which had me really bummed because it was such a good looking piece overall.
First time buying this brand and I totally don't regret it. Best winter jacket I ever have. I love how lightweight it is. Love how comfortable it is especially in the armpits great movability. Extremely easy to put on or take off the jacket and when you put it on the hood automatically goes on your head. The two ways zipper is awesome if you're driving a manual car and the hood is not so big where it's uncomfortable on the back seat. I'm 5.6 150 lb 38 chest and I took a size small excellent fit. Only one thing I would improve on the jacket if it was the same jacket but the hood was removable.
I picked this jacket after months of agonizing and comparison shopping and returning other jackets. I am 155lbs, size 31 waist, basically a slim programmer body 😀 Arcteryx has the best fit for my body type. I bought the Thorium and Cerium but returned the Cerium because it was too thin/lightweight. I just finished walking the dogs: 1 mile loop in 26° F. Practically no wind. It was the perfect weight, hood up, perfect warmth. I am so relieved to be done with my coat search and so happy with my choice. This price is embarrassing. I wish it came with LoJack!
I bought this dress two weeks ago. It is very warm, especially the hat can effectively keep warm and do not block the view. Its shortcomings: it can't be worn as an inner liner, because it's too thick to look fat when I put on my coat. Its hat will touch my head when I don't wear it.
Jacket started leaking feathers after 1 week of purchase and zipper feels cheap. I spent thousands on products here and this jacket is overpriced, cheap quality, and very disappointing. Do not buy.

I really like this jacket, the construction feels high quality and it is certainly warm. The new two-way zipper is also great, allowing me to use it when belaying. However, the hood is not helmet compatible, despite being described as so. When wearing my helmet with the hood up, I cannot do the zip up, and if I could the collar would come up to just below my eyes - not at all practical. The odd thing is that on the women's version, the hood is much bigger and this is not a problem. Not sure what the reason is for that difference between the models but it's a big disappointment for me. I reached out to customer support about this - their response was that 'the hood would fit better over some helmets' - but not sure how accurate this is.
