VERY Different Fabric from last year's model
Last year, I added this to my mental list of "Things to buy at REI". I purchased this version online, and when it arrived I was super disappointed by the change in fabric. The previous model was like a lightweight sweatshirt; both warm and comfortable. This new model is lighter, and more like an athletic shirt material. It's basically a light weight athletic running shirt (not sweatshirt) with a zipper and a hood. If that's what you're looking for, this can be a good choice. If you have one or are familiar with the previous model be aware of the change in fabric weight. I loved the previous version. This new one sucks in comparison.
A LOT Different Fabric Than Last Year's model
Early this year, I added this to my mental list of "Things to buy at REI". I was at my local REI today and was disappointed by the change in fabric. The previous model was like a lightweight sweatshirt with about a 300 weight fabric or so. This new model is maybe a 200 weight fabric. I think of it as basically a medium weight long underwear shirt (not sweatshirt) with a zipper and a hood. If that's what you're looking for, this can be a good choice. If you have one or are familiar with the previous model be aware of the change in fabric weight.
Functional & versatile & stylable
I purchased this jacket to shoot hoops and do calisthenics in the fall. It's stretchy enough to allow full range of motion and easily accommodates several layers underneath. Despite the stretch, it keeps its shape well thanks to the elastic cuffs in the waist, hood, and sleeves, giving it a commuter jacket look. Eventually, I'll take it on a run thanks to its light weight and easy ventilation. It's quite comfy to lounge in and layers great because the fabric is low-friction. Just don't expect fleece-like warmth from it — it's a fairly thin, breathable fabric. Pros: Hood stays in place and close to your skin without any drawstring, stretches to accommodate bulky headphones, and doesn't flop around when it's down. Pockets are recessed and keep your phone, gloves, etc secure and stationary. Sleeves are long and stay in place when arms are raised. Cons: Zipper is small, not super smooth. Seam flaps are floppy but soft and mostly away from the body. It would have been nice if they were flatlocked in the hood and maybe also the sleeves.
irrationally upset re: this product change
The one I got last year was the perfect hoodie. Comfortable, light, just warm enough. The inside was a like a soft thin waffled microfiber/cotton feel. This one is like the plastic lining of a nineteen eighties bathing suit. I lost the old one. That's on me. Ordered this online immediately. Super disappointed. Will be returning it.
Cool Weather Sweater
This sweater is light weight & is best suited for cool, not cold conditions. It is comfortable & allows for unrestricted movement.
Great Fall/Spring Light Weight Hoodie
The material for this is similar to the REI Co-op Active Pursuits Tech Pants. It is a light weight material that breathes well, stretches for hiking/outdoor activities, and keeps you warm for shoulder seasons or inside the house. If you are looking for a heavier hoodie, this is not it. If you want something for morning runs, cool hikes, or colder outdoor days playing sports, then this is great for that. I also layer it under a light weight puffer jacket for colder days. Pockets are nice and have a small hidden pocket inside.
fabric change is a huge downgrade
As another reviewer said - the previous version was awesome. It was more “cottony”. I have ordered 4 or so. The new version is a huge downgrade. I ordered it and it arrived and I was very disappointed. It is now like any other polyester type running shirt.
Great jacket
This jacket is great quality and very warm. The style is great and the zipper pockets are nice.
Nice light zip hoodie
Pleased with this full zip hoodie. Just what I was looking for, something lightweight for cool, but not cold days. Haven't tested in cold conditions to see how warm it might be, but I was comfortable in 60 degree breezy conditions. I'm 6'2" 170lbs and got a medium which I think was the correct choice. Its fairly slim fitting and not too baggy, but with enough room to fit at least two layers (e.g. tshirt + flannel) underneath. Arms and body are long enough for my lanky frame.
Fav baselayer
I really didn’t want to buy this, didn’t see the point, but a hoodie with an SPF 50 rating was required for the mountaineering class/trip I was going on. This became one of my favorite purchases of the year. I spent 5 days on Mt Baker, I never took this off. In the sun at camp it saved me. On the move, on the mountain it was one of my base layers, same at night. That was two years ago. I still use it all the time. It’s my first external layer of warmth when hiking. It’s lightweight, packs well, stretch’s and moves well, and it’s surprisingly wind resistant. The hood is a little small, but that does allow it to fit under my helmet. It’s still my fav baselayer when mountaineering. The thing I didn’t want to buy became my fav item.
