Levagaiter Mid Falls Short
I received this from the REI Trailblazers Program. I’ve been looking for a lightweight pair of mid gaiters. These from Kahtoola looked like they’d fit the ticket. These are lightweight and soft. Adjusting the height of the strap isn’t the easiest; I’d hate to need to do so in the outdoors in cold. The strap doesn’t come in much from the heel of one’s shoe which could be a problem. The thickness and hardness also make it awkward since it doesn’t lay flat with one’s shoe tread. The zippers have to be the worst part of these. The zippers are at an odd angle and it’s difficult not only to see the bottom but to line them up. It took me and a friend upwards of 5 minutes to muster them on. Once finally on, cinched the top. The top does slide down even if cinched. The fit on mine was loose and one side dragged onto that ground. Unfortunately with all the flaws in trying them on at home, these won’t be a part of my hiking kit.
High quality, effective gaiters that stay in place
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. These are my second pair of gaiters I’ve had, and probably the better pair. These are high quality and effective, do not move once they’re in place, and fairly easy to use. I got a size medium, but I could’ve probably gone up a size when intending to wear with my winter boots, otherwise these fit perfectly well with my normal trail runners. I intend to wear them more with my boots though, as I’m not as worried about precipitation or mud with my trail runners. All elements of the gaiters feel high quality, like it won’t easily rip or tear, including the zipper. The plastic bar that fits snuggly under your shoe works perfectly well with both pairs of shoes I tried them on with. As does the small metal clip that fits onto your shoelace, securing them in place. They work well, keep moisture and precipitation out of my pant leg and out of the inside of my shoe, and I would recommend them if you’re needing something more heavy duty than a stretchy-style gaiter to keep mud and rocks out of trail runners.
great product, easy to use & convenient to carry
These gaiters are lightweight, waterproof, easy to carry in a pack & easy to put on. My previous gaiters worked fine but are heavier, don’t have a carry bag & harder to put on. I have only worn these twice so far but am super pleased. They be regulars in my pack in Spring
Nice snug fitting gaiters
Well designed but tight fitting gaiters. I appreciated their snug fit although it made it slightly difficult to put on. Size them up if you have concerns. Perfect size for my size 11 trail runners. Appreciated the solid instep stirrup.
Nice but has some shortcomings.
I received the gaiters for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The adjustable instep strap is relatively east to unfasten but requires some force to reinstall. Luckily the setting that I choose fit all three pair of boots that I tried as I'm not sure how well it would hold up with continual adjustments. The gaiters are marked right and left. The first time that I installed them I had difficultly with the zipper as it is on the front outside of the foot. The gaiters seemed to be symmetric around the center so I installed them on opposite feet, the zipper is then easier to secure. On the shortest boots I noticed that the cuff would slide down my leg. One pair of boots has a more pronounced heel than the others; I was concerned with the instep strap remaining in place on the others, which they did. The gaiters were tested on a wet dirt trail, on a slushy upban hike, and in the inch or so of wet snow that we had. They performed well on these relatively easy hikes and were easy to clean. The goretex kept my pants legs dry with one exception. The wet snow compacted enough to push up under the bottom of the gaiters and the cuffs of my pants were wet. I have two concerns that I have not been able to test: (1) how well they would hold up when scuffed against branches, logs, rocks, etc., and (2) since the instep strap does not sit flat under the boot I would expect dry twigs, etc getting trapped under.
Work Like A Charm
I received these gaiters from the REI Trailblazers program in exchange for an honest review. These gaiters have kept me clean, dry, and warm during the recent ice storms in the Pacific Northwest. I live in a rural, hilly area where our roads don't get de-iced and having to park a quarter mile from my house and trek through the brush and ice to get to my car in the morning is a frequent occurrence this time of year. Having these gaiters on hand has been so nice and they have worked perfectly. They are incredibly fast to put on and work well with all types of shoes. (They've even worked will with my chelsea boots that don't have any laces.) They are easy to adjust with the elastic at the top so that they fit snugly around your calf and feel very secure no matter what type of material is underneath them. They are very packable and come with a nice pouch that doesn't take up much space, plus they are lightweight which has been great considering I've been carrying them around with my everywhere the last few days. They are very easy to clean, dirt and mud wipe right off with a towel or rag. The sizing for these is a bit confusing. I ordered a large, despite my shoe size indicating that I should wear a medium, and I'm glad I did. Had I ordered a smaller size, I don't think that these would have fit my heavier duty winter boots which is my intended use for them. Overall, these did a great job of keeping snow, ice, dirt, and mud out of my shoes and off of my pants and I am very happy to have them in my gear collection. I look forward to using them in the future for longer jaunts.
Lightweight and comfortable!
Ok, this was my first time using lightweight gaiters so I was skeptical but impressed. These are very comfortable, even for trail running. They stay securely in place and of course they are waterproof. A few notes: the gaiters didn't come with clear instructions, so it took me a few minutes and a Google search to figure out that I was putting them on backwards, but once I got that it was all good. :-D And I'm still not sure about the instep strap: it barely goes around my max cushion trail shoes and it doesn't fit neatly into the treads. Next time I'll try without it.
Gaiters or Rainboots?
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is a great option for rainy days if you don't feel like wearing clunkier knee-high rainboots. It took me a little while to figure out the hook that is on the bottom edge -- then, I discovered you can secure this hook gaiter to your shoelaces to help prevent water (or snow) from entering through the top of your shoe/hiking boot -- especially when it's pouring out. One major plus to these gaiters is that the red instep strap is removeable. If you plan on wearing the gaiters with shoes/boots that don't have a heel, you would quickly feel the strap hitting the ground as you walk. It's uncomfortable, and it will actually wear the strap down, so definitely remove the strap, as it works perfectly fine without it. One thing I wish were a little stronger would be the elastic at the top of the gaiter. While it's lightweight and adjustable, it works just fine. I suppose I'm always worried that the gaiter might start slipping down. It hasn't yet, so I guess it's just a preference of mine to feel the tug of the elastic! All in all, I would recommend these as a nice option to keep your feet completely dry!
Spring Snow, Scree, Wet Ground Cover, Rain, Etc A+
I live at high elevation and hike / climb many days of the year, all year round. I own and use several gaiters for Spring snow and deep Winter conditions but was looking for something that I could use in the wet North Atlantic region I now seem to be exploring. So for a Trip to the Scottish Highlands last Fall, I got my wife and I a pair of these gaiters. They seem to run a bit small so I gave her my mediums and exchanged her small for a large set for me, this did the trick. Once I got the lower strap set, all was good in terms of fit. They are super light, very much perform as GTX should and are super packable. On really rainy days, they kept our socks nice and dry. I like them so much I bought a second pair as a backup since I now use them as scree gaiters in the Summer and for quick stream crossings with full leader upper boots. I have a long and remote trek in the Himalaya coming up this Fall and the gear list says that gaiters are not needed but you can bet I will be taking them on that trip too.
Great on Hawaii Trails
I've been using these gaiters hiking in Hawaii...I wear a size 6.5 in boots and hiking shoes but the Small seems to fit. In Hawaii, we have mud and rain and some overgrowth. I've used these for 13 hour hikes and no problems at all. I even brought it to Japan where we hiked the Shimonoraka Trail in ice and it did well. Yesterday though, I hiked 13 hours in thick overgrowth. The thorns kept pulling at the excess strap (I wish there was something to secure and hide the strap . I end up putting the strap inside but it always gets out after hiking that long). Also, the zipper started to come down an inch but I assume it's because of the thorns and overgrowth pulling at the strap more than anything else. I didnt have this problem in Japan or other Hawaii trails.
