Simply: Excellent.
In a word: Excellent. I've used this on about 6 trips at this point, and it works exactly as described. Light, easy set up, durable. Slightly roomier & lighter than the 'mid design that we've all see for the last decade, with better separation between the rain fly & bug mesh. This past weekend, the bathtub bottom was put to the test as a torrential downpour gave us almost 1" in a half hour, which overwhelmed the natural drainage of the campsite and left standing water under the tent pads. I woke up, put my hand on the floor of the tent, and it was like a waterbed. No leaks or seepage, everyone's gear stayed dry. Can't think of a better test than that.
MSR adjustable pole.
The insert its self worked great. however, the first time I used it the Adjustable Collapsible pole by MSR poked a whole through the top of it. that same pole worked great when just using the shelter its self without the insert.
I love this insert. So
I love this insert. So lightweight and easy to set up!
Backpacking in Desolation wilderness California
I purchased both this and the rain fly shelter to match for a 4 day backpacking trip in Desolation wilderness in Northern California. The insert is like a regular tent. The pockets are small on the sides but I used the accessory pole (5 foot recommended) and hung my small lantern from it. There's a tone of room so you can fit everything you cary and you can change in the tent just fine. You have to keep the pole at about the second notch to make it tight and there a bit of a nuance for the stakes and getting everything set up right - not a big deal though. Set up was easy, but keep in mind, you have to pick a spot generally larger than those that already have rocks cleaned because of the stakes and its size. Once you're all set up with the rain fly on, it's pretty nice, warm and keeps the wind away. CAUTION. There were a couple windy nights on my trip - if the outer fly isn't nearly touching the ground, you'll get a ton of dust inside. The wind will come in from the bottom of the fly and carry with it a lot of dust landing all over your protected gear and face inside the tent. If you worry about the pole in the center, don't. After the first night, you don't even notice and it sits in there pretty tight. Even if you bump it, it doesn't shift too much. Also, in the Desolation wilderness there are many spots with just flat rock. Think about where you'll be camping mostly when buying this tent. Either stake it down or get creative with wrapping rocks on the stake lines. Overall the design is fun, it's unique, and I enjoyed it.
