I am a pretty avid birder and a bit of an optics junkie. I was excited to try out the pair of NOCS REI sent me for a review. NOCS is a small and inexpensive start into the binocular world. The allure to me is in their compactness. They can fit in a large pocket, and if you wore them around your neck all day, you wouldn’t end up with “Birder’s Neck.” The packaging the NOCS comes in is made of cardboard and is plastic-free. Cool. They include a neck strap and a carry bag as well. The binoculars have a sturdy feel. The body is a powder-coated metal. The powder-coated colors give it a bit of fun and fashion, but I like to stay a little lower key and rather not have something drawing attention to me. However, as a brand, that is precisely what you would desire. The powder-coating gives it a good grip and it seems to be a bit less cold when holding in cooler temperatures. The binoculars have twist-out eyecups, and an adjustable diopter. A diopter makes the binoculars adjust for getting the same sharpness in both eyes if one is stronger or weaker than the other. I appreciate this on the binoculars. Very easy to adjust on the NOCS. Now for the most important part of why we have binoculars, the clarity and sharpness. For a sub-$100 pair of binoculars, it is pretty good. NOCS utilizes roof prisms. That typically doesn’t come at such a low price. Other brands with roof prisms start at the $200 range. (Porro prism is the other kind of binoculars with larger front glass that most people think of when they envision binoculars. They are cheaper, but often bigger and quite heavier.) Using these for birding was great. At the 8x power, natural shake from hands didn’t seem noticeable. They seem to hold steady. I was able to see a lot of details and colors on birds. Text on distant signs seemed sharp too. The coatings on the glass seem to do well. I didn’t notice any fringing, so they seem sharp in that aspect. There are a couple things I find lacking. One is there are no lens caps to protect the glass, or keep it clean. I am very protective of my glass, to the point I can count only a few times I have actually wiped dust off. The other, while not a big deal, was the lack of a front tripod mount. Although as small as these things are, it is understandable. Lastly, was that the eyecups are too small for any of my NovaGrade digiscoping attachments. If you try and shoot a photo through the eyecup, it will take some work to get it lined up perfectly. However, NOCS has a universal phone adapter they sell if you want to go that route. It looks like it would do the trick well enough. I didn’t do a lot of night viewing with these, but the front objective lens is a bit small for good night viewing. Basically, I looked at the Moon and some distant lights. These just aren’t something I would likely use for astronomy. I also didn’t put it to the test of their claimed waterproofing. I would have to believe their claim until I couldn’t. Will I give up my higher-end binoculars for these, no, but these are going in my everyday field bag, that takes a beating. At under 12 ounces, I won’t even notice the extra weight. They weigh just a little more than my everyday carry monocular. These would be a great pair of first binoculars, and could be an “all-you-ever-need” pair of binoculars for most people. Also, these would be good for children that are ready for a good starter pair.

Ok, but I don’t see the hype.

My primary gripes: 1) minimum focus is not close enough, 2) eye relief for eye glass wearers is not far enough, 3) I’m spoiled by Monarch 5 8x42’s. I got these 8x25’s for my wife as her first pair and I read all the hype from people getting free pairs to try out. My first pair of bins were REI 8x25s and I cherished them until I could afford a better pair — I didn’t know what I was missing until I upgraded. I hoped these NOCS could be adequate for my wife’s first pair, but we quickly discovered they weren’t going to check enough of the boxes. Most importantly, we enjoy backyard birding out our window of our hummingbird feeders and bird feeders. The 13ft minimum focus will just barely focus on Hummingbirds at our feeders, sometimes not enough, or kinglets in shrubs a few feet from us, or the magnificent detail of tree swallows perching on swallow boxes, or fast-moving warblers in dense foliage of trees. They did pick out raptors, waterfowl, and other larger birds at medium distances ok. Compared to my 8x42’s, I found my eyes crossing a little when pulling the bins away from my eyes to scan. Also the eye relief of 13mm is a little short for the both of us as eyeglass wearers, where the 8x42’s 19.5mm eye relief really helps our viewing of objects more comfortably. Maybe the new NOCS 8x42’s will feature more comfortable technical specs, I’ll certainly test them out, but I wish more people who reviewed these bins would have remarked on these challenges. Granted someone said they wouldn’t replace their primary optics, but my wife kept borrowing my pair of 8x42’s when she had her NOCS 8x25s around her neck. I think we will be returning them for a more comfortable pair with closer minimum focus, maybe not Monarch’s but maybe a lower range 8x42 binocular.

Great binocular for the whole family.

Our family has gone through many binoculars in the past. We have 3 kids 14, 12, and 8. We have broken 2 out of the 3 binoculars that we own. This one has been great. It's a bit on the heavy side but the durability is a definite plus. It's survived heavy use by the kids over the past 3 weeks. The grooves on the outside allows it to be super grippy and easy to use. We've taken it with us out hiking, birding - searching for owls, ferry rides, and up to the Seattle Space Needle. It's been super fun to use and it's waterproof which is perfect here in the Northwest. It was dropped into the snow during a sleigh ride and was perfectly fine afterwards. The dials were a bit stiff to start off with but it gradually got better. It's a bit hard to take photos with it without the adapter but it's possible. Love that it's colorful - kids love it and it's easy to find. Overall great product!

I <3 Nocs!

I bought these for an upcoming Alaskan cruise and in the meantime I've been using them for hiking around CO and UT, and I love them! They're great quality, feel really durable, and they're still compact enough to not take up too much room in my hiking pack. You can also take zoomed pics through the lens with your phone!

Nocs Binoculars Rocks!

For compact sized binoculars, Nocs Standard Issue 8x25 waterproof binoculars are impressive! The binoculars come with a cloth storage pouch, lens cleaning cloth, and neck strap. Easy to understand instructions for set up and use are clearly printed on the product packaging in addition to being available online in a video format. I’m an avid birdwatcher who greatly appreciated the high-quality optics, which for me resulted in a longer time that my eyes can comfortably view through the binoculars with less eye fatigue. The 8x magnification is especially excellent for backyard feeder observations. The binoculars did not fog with temperature changes from 71°F (inside home) to 13°F (outdoors) and back to 71°F. With being compact, they are lightweight and easily fit into a large jacket pocket, purse, or automobile glove box ready for quick access. To protect and keep the lenses clean, I store my Nocs in the cloth pouch. I am fine without having plastic lens covers (which are not provided with the binoculars) as they get in the way during use if attached to the binoculars/neck strap or are easily lost if they are fully detachable. The textured grooved surface of the Nocs feels great in my hands and enhances grip during use. The focus wheel and eye cups smoothly adjust. After following the instructions, I was able to use my smartphone to take a photo of a pileated woodpecker through my Nocs (see photo). With a 30-day money back and lifetime guarantee Nocs are worth treating yourself to!

Outstanding!!!

I already have a binocular but forgot to bring it with me. I was out of town. I was treating my son and his girlfriend to a Cirque Du Soleil’ show. I have been to many of their shows and for me a binocular is a MUST, to be able to really see the performance ‘up close and personal’. This was my son’s girlfriend’s very first ‘Cirque Du Soleil’. She was perplexed why I insisted on us getting binoculars. Since I forgot mine, I decided to purchase another. My son chose to buy one as well. Once at the show, my son’s girlfriend understood my compulsion on buying a binocular. Your binocular is perfect!!! It’s great quality, light weight, and great price.

Cool Nocs!

I wish I had these for my Yellowstone park visit! These binoc's are compact, heavy duty, and have a nice grippy texture for holding. While I received the seafoam color for review, I see that these are also available in an assortment of colors. I took these out to the coast to do a little birdwatching and thought these were very easy to use. I do wish that the lenses retracted a bit more (guess my eyes are closer together than the average person). Also, I will likely get a more substantial neck strap. There's also an included carrying pouch and lens towel so these are ready to go out of the box.

Nocs not a good choice for birding

Nocs are a "cool" compact binocular is you want to watch things that are far away. If you are going to use these as a handing pair of binoculars for birdwatching, select another pair of binoculars. The minimum focus on these binoculars is at best 15 to 20 feet. The optics are just okay. For a few more dollars you can buy better optics with a closer minimum focus.

May be "best of breed" for lighweights

Bought these at the Boulder store after comparing with the other compact "travel" binoculars, including Nikon's travel versions. The Nocs are a bit heavier than some others, but had the best clear image and eye relief, thanks to larger ocular lenses. Are they as good as my Nikon Monarch full size binoculars for bird-watching? No, but these add a lot less weight to my pack, and they are high quality.

Solid binoculars at the price point

Purchased these recently (in orange - "poppy") and have been very happy with them so far. They are very compact, focus easily, and have reasonable viewability at the price point. I have larger more expensive pairs that are better, but if you are looking for something in the sub $100 and small these are a good choice. They also seem very durable and will stand up to using in a wet/bumpy environment.

Great binoculars for first time user

I originally purchased the 10x25 version and wasn't entirely happy. An REI staff person recommend the 8x25 and I instantly loved them. Easy to use, clear picture, and just the right amount of zoomed in for casual nature watching.
