3, 6L filters is an excellent solution for river trips
I've used a 4L gravityworks for backpacking for many years and love it. Simple, hands free, and low maintenance. There's really no other alternative I would use. On a recent 16-day river trip on the Alsek River in CAN and AK, we had to trim weight for the single engine flights which meant leaving behind our std 25lb battery operated filter system. Instead we used 3, 6L gravityworks filters, operated simultaneously. Hung the bags on large pieces of driftwood stuck vertically in the sand. Could fill 2, 20L jerry cans in about 30 minutes. 3 used together ended up being an excellent solution for a 15-person trip, and only added 4 lbs to our total load.
I only wish I purchased it sooner!
I cannot believe I did not purchase this product sooner. Took it on a week long backpack in the North Cascades and was able to filter easily from lake, creek, river and tiny meadow streams (trickles). It was a buggy week and not having to find a good rock to sit on and pump while being attacked by the trifecta (horse and black flies, mosquitoes) was a game changer. Fetch water, occupy yourself for a few minutes while it filters, then dispense. It is that easy. Backflushing and testing are easy with instructions right on the storage pouch. My only goof was to not purchase the Big Zip adapter hose which would have made the process even more hands off.
Great Product That Could Be Better
I use this filter while camping and while hiking; it can filter enough water for a large basecamp, and it's light and fast enough for a quick hiking group. It doesn't get much simpler than this -- just fill and hang. That said, the bag could be designed better. My biggest wish is that there was some sort of spigot or cap installed in the bag besides where the filtered water runs in. I personally find the process of having to fill the clean bag, flip it, remove the hose and cap the bag cumbersome, but not difficult. If there was a way to collect water from the bag as water was still being filtered in, I believe this system would be many times better.
Great Product!
This was my first water filtration system. I WAS going to purchase a pump style, but thankfully the sales rep convinced me to purchase this instead. What an easy to use product! No pumping, let gravity do all the work. The transparent bags makes it easy to determine how full each bag is. The system filters water faster than I had imagined, and I love that I can filter straight into a water bottle if I choose to. The back flushing is easy to do and takes seconds. I had complete peace of mind while using this on my recent backcountry camping trip.
Worked for 1 Trip, Then Failed
We bought the Platypus filter two years ago for a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip. It worked great and filtered quickly. There was a constant flow of water from the hose and easily filled 8 bottles in 10 minutes . After the trip I read all the directions closely to clean and store the unit properly. 2 years later I took it on a trip and it took 35 minutes to fill each bottle! We ended up borrowing a fellow hiker's pump so we could make it to our destination before dark. We used iodine on the way out because we could not take a 3 hour break to refill all the bottles. The filter is supposed to be good for 1000 L... not so! It caused a lot of stress on our trip.
Fantastic and ALMOST great
I have been using these MSR and then Platypus gravity filter systems for years. There’s no better camp filtration system, provided the available water cleanliness is reasonable. (If not, you should lay down the big money for the MSR Guardian). However, I have one suggestion to the Platypus/Cascade Designs people. You should offer an option without the “receiving” bag. Why bother with it? I just threw mine away. Instead, I filter directly from the “dirty” reservoir into the Platypus water bags that everyone uses. (You can also filter into a Nalgene, but then you have to watch it.) Why have an intermediate water receptacle?
Best water system we've tried so far, with a few tweaks
We took this out on a canoe trip this fall. It filters very, very fast..4L in just a couple of minutes if you hang it high. Our routine: We use a cloth bucket to scoop water from the lake, let it settle, and then scoop the water through prefilter into the dirty bag--keeps grit out of the system. 2. Then hang and voila! Water. 3. We fill up our Nalgene bottles for drinking, and use rest in the clean bag as a water sack for camp cooking and cleaning. Tip: Back flush *every* time (as the directions say) and it runs like a charm. NOTE FOR THE DESIGN TEAM: That ziplock zipper is WAY hard to seal, especially with cold hands.
Volume Calculations
Only gripe is the volume labels. 140oz/4L, 100oz/3L, 70oz/2L, 34oz/1L. Why wouldn't they just label it correctly? Is the common backpacker not smart enough to understand this 5oz variance at 4L? Am I miscalculating? Also the design would be better with a locking clip on the dirty water bag. I wouldn't trust carrying the dirty water bag when it is full of water. The bag is good for walking a short distance from a water source while holding the bag. They have locking clips for the hydration water bags with similar design, not sure why they would omit this! If it came with a bottle kit, that would make this system even better. Not sure if I can buy the kit to use with this...
Definite Great Buy
Very easy source of filtering water for 6-8 backcountry campers. The convenience of being able to haul water from a source to camp enables ease of filtering and less time spent filtering and can occur while relaxing, cooking, or even sleeping. Found that the filter remained usable throughout a 9 day backpacking trip in the Windrivers by back-flushing and rinsing the filter on a daily basis. Very happy with this filter, the bag construction, and tear resistance.
Great filter. 4L in 4 minutes! But...impossible to close.
This filter is amazing. 4L in about 4 minutes. It works very well in Montana. We've had it for years and the filter is still going strong. We've saved a lot of hikers who were spent from pumping or their filters just failed completely. So fast and easy - as long as you quickly backflush each time. Unfortunately, there is a deal breaker and here it is: the ""zipper"" closure on the dirty bag is impossible to get closed. I can't even do it. My husband has to do it and although he is strong, it's very very difficult. And if you can't get it closed, there is no vacuum and the filter won't work. Isn't there a better design or some sort of slide tool that can be offered to help close the bag?
Thanks for the feedback, Kristin. We will pass this along to our product developers.
