I couldn't believe Mountin Hardwear would sell a bad product. I bought the Ozonic, put my fleece underneath and got in the shower. I was in the shower for 20 minutes, the shower just poured on me from all sides, I turned sideways and forward. After that, I went out and took off the Ozonic, my fleece was dry, I checked the inside of the jacket - it was dry, I felt moisture, but it felt like moisture from the outside, I didn’t find any drops or moisture, I took a paper towel and applied it to the places where I thought I felt moisture - nothing, the towel was dry. I could say that the shower jet is longer and stronger than the rain for 20 minutes, that’s a fact!
I took this coat out ice climbing on what proved to be a day of variable conditions. The morning was in the sun with dripping ice in full sun with air temps below freezing. The pit zips and water resistance shell made the morning comfortable. As the clouds rolled in and the snow started coming down I zipped up the pits, put the hood up and kept climbing. Temps dropped to 16° F and I was comfortable with this as my outer layer. The length was perfect. It stayed tucked into my harness all day.
While the Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonic Jacket excels in breathability, especially during active outdoor pursuits, a few design considerations could enhance its functionality. The absence of sealed side pockets, featuring a mesh back, is a notable point. Additionally, the lack of a chest or internal pocket limits convenient storage options. Another aspect to be mindful of is that the side pockets sit relatively low on the jacket, potentially causing inconvenience when seated, especially with items like a phone. This is exacerbated by the waist strap cinching over the pockets, making access challenging.
Looked at Visp, tried the helium because i could order from REI. It did not fit with mid layer and ended up buying the Ozonic. It is a couple ounces more but packable, light and has pit zips. I have a very nice North Face rain coat but it is heavy and not very packable. Cold weather ok but for most hiking I defer to packing this Ozonic. I have had it for about a month and am very please and would buy again. If you want super light weight go with a Visp. This is manageable.
This jacket had all the features I wanted - but it's cut is just so unbelievably awful, it's hard to communicate. M is the smallest that will fit my shoulders, but three friends could join me in this. Unless you are over 300 lbs - OMG yuk. (BTW I am large chest/shoulders, not thin at all.) This is just NOT up to the standards of the better brands at all. And get this - it's a STRETCH jacket. If it were not stretch, a little generous cut (not this much) might make sense for some applications - but not if it stretches anyway! Perhaps they will take this back? Not sure.
I am a forestry student, and I use this jacket a lot more than I thought I'd! It's perfect for always having it in the bag, and good for unpredictable rains. I know I don't want a hardshell, so this is good enough for me. I've wore it through sprinkles, hard pours, and hardpours I get wet from the sleeves (probably cuz I'm constantly coving my arms) and some around neck (I'm in a lecture lab, so make sense I guess?) Other than that, I wear it biking around, wear it on slightly windy days, very useful in like urban - light outdoorsy stuff so far.
This is my second Ozonic stretch jacket. I like the first one enough to get another when it was on sale. Unfortunately, it didn't have as much stretch as the first one. The material seemed much stiffer. The only drawback with the jackets is the velcro on the cuffs. The sleeves just won't stay were you want them especially on bike rides. The cuffs really should be elasticized. Also, have been waiting for a half zip pull-over style for the best biking damp weather jacket. It is fairly warm, but ventilated, and is a very good wind breaker.
The raincoat was quite comfortable and did a passable job of repelling rain, and importantly for backpacking, was quite light and compact when folded. Unfortunately... The zipper failed (separates at a certain place on the zipper when under moderate stress) after 2 years of occasional although somtimes dirty/gritty use. I contacted Mountain Hardwear and they do not sell replacement zippers nor can they tell me where to find one. I don't think this would be covered under their warranty. The zipper is apparently a waterproof zipper, not your ordinary plastic zipper. I never liked using the zipper as it always felt like I was having to force it... probably because of the tight clearances to be waterproof? There is no flap on the jacket to keep rain off the zipper...
I have had this Jacket or its predecessor for a number of years now. It is wind and waterproof and has a great hood. I am 6 feet tall 225 and got the 2xl. Fits great over mid weight filler jacket. On the negative, the interior has ripped with stretching. The zipper system is the worst I have ever experienced on an expensive outdoor jacket. No wind flap and hard to use. Frequently separates. What were they thinking. I have been an active outdoorsman for over 50 years and am familiar with getting zippers to work better. Does not much help here. Defective design and implementation. So no, I can't recommend when such a vital component is so much of a hassle. Look elsewhere, buy a gortex jacket from another manufacturer, this one is obviously stuck on what I consider a stupid zipper system.
I bought this jacket a few months ago for my bike commute to work. Yesterday was the first day I wore it in the rain: it was light rain at about 1mm/hr. My ride is only 8km and takes about 25 mins. I was completely soaked through by about the halfway point. I've had water resistant jackets that kept me drier than this. I don't recommend this jacket for anything more than a short walk in drizzle. It's too bad because the fit and lightness is exactly what I was looking for,
