Awesome right out of the box!

After 5 good years with my Merrell Moabs I was reluctant to take a chance on a new brand, but I was instantly impressed with these boots. They were comfortable right out of the box, required no break in time, and I've had no trouble whatsoever with hot spots or blisters. They are supportive and the tread is super grippy and stable, a must have for hiking on Colorado's rocky trails. They are also breathable and my feet never feel too hot in them, even on 90+ degree days. The gussets on the sides of the laces are a bit low when compared to other boots and sometimes small rocks/gravel gets kicked up into the boot, but for how comfortable these are it's a very minor inconvenience. Overall a great boot!

Almost but not quite
The fit is nice and the boot is very comfortable but the sole at the ball of the foot is too thin or flexible so that when walking on an irregular surface I can feel the stones or twigs beneath my feet. Maybe I have really sensitive feet but I don't think so. these will have to go back.

inconsistent sizes across brands

First, I have been ordering size 8.5 for my hiking boots for the past ~ 6 years. I settled on Vasque as a good fit but then bought Merril brand. They fit more narrow across the front and toe and I had to adjust my socks. Now I just bought these Salomon Women's X Ultra 4 Mid Aero Hiking Boots and they are way too large. But I don't have a car and it's a major chore to get to the store to return them. Plus it appears that a size 8 in unavailable. So I put in a pair of Super Feet inner soles and use my thinnest socks. This discrepancy in sizes is not only irritating but most inconvenient. Second; inconsistency in quality. Merril and Salomon have been good but I'll not ever buy Vasque again - the last "walking" shoes were cheaply made. The laces would not stay knotted to hold the shoe in place and after two months I found I needed an appointment with the podiatrist. The slippage caused aggrevation of the plantar fachia and subsequently, increasing pain. I might no longer be able to buy online because of inconsistent quality. It is not longer convenient.
