Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Just what I was looking for

This is a fun shoe, that has the guide-rail nub (I like to think of it as a nub,) as it catches the edge of my arch and it gives me a nice little bump reminder if I have an over stride. This shoe is just right for street, trail runs, yeah the little stones get stuck in the tread, but the tread is definitely thick and so far with just 100 miles in there is no wear showing yet. I will say that while these shows are marketed as black, they seem to be more of dark gray then black and you can see the difference in color comparison to the Escalates, not a deal breaker for me though.

Terrible tread, upper wore through < 50miles

The worst tread I think I've ever experienced. It collects small pebbles, and doesn't let go of them, turning the bottom into coarse sandpaper - don't wear on wood floors! It's also noisy, so you sound like Spongebob when walking. And I found it more slippery than my standard running shoe (with Continental treads). Second problem, the upper wore a hole in the fabric in less than 50 miles of running. I returned them. Plus side is I like the big toe space.

Uncomfortable for me and sole design flaw

I found the arch started too far to the rear of the shoe so would dig into my instep. The design flaw for me was the design of the sole outer surface. It has tons of small holes in the pattern so that gravel picked up on the run sticks in there and sits higher than surface height. So you're scratching anything you walk on inside your home or a gymnasium. Think scratching your hardwood floors even after wiping your feet on the mat at the door. The pic is after I had picked a lot of it out but would have needed a pick or something to get the rest of it. Gave up at that point.

Does Not Live Up To The Altra Name

Have run in one version or another of Altra's since 2015. The Provision 6 is narrower than last years Provision 5. See pictures, same size. I Run in Altra's because of the wide toe box and Zero drop. On my first long run in the Provision 6 (only 10 miles) over basically level terrain, the foot and leg pain became intense. The next weekend I ran farther (11 miles) up and down hills with rough terrain wearing last years Provision 5 and experienced no discomfort in my feet or legs. Version 6 fits my foot so poorly that my feet hurt even on short runs. The width appears to be the main culprit but that may not be the only factor. It feels like they also did something to the inside of the shoe as the arch does not feel the same as last years version. The feel of this version is so Non Altra it caused me to even question the Zero Drop on this version. The new heal design I like and the new tread grips great when running on Ice and snow. I could only recommend this shoe to people who have long narrow feet, which I do not. I will now be looking at other versions to see if the ALTRA shoe that won my heart and foot all those years ago even exists. I hope it does.

Not suitable for flat feet?

This would have been my 4th pair of Altras. Like the concept in general. I have a tendency to fall off of high stack height shoes due to pronation so tried this stability model. The rails start really far back and dug into what would be my arch if I had them. Just a little pressure when testing around the house, but severe pain after 30 minutes running. Returned. Maybe these would be great for normal feet but for me it was like running with AA batteries shoved under the insoles. Also I like how much outsole these have, great traction, but the texture picks up EVERY pebble you step on. Other reviews were spot on there!

Favorite Altra shoe so far

I ran in the Escalante(which I loved) for the past five years, but I always struggled with shin splints any time I ran more than 25-30 miles/week. I decided to look for something with a touch of stability to take the pressure off of my shins(I tend to over pronate), and the Provision 6 has fit the bill perfectly. It's everything I loved about the Escalante, but feels secure enough--especially in the midfoot--to put lots of miles on. Perfect amount of cushioning, thin and secure upper material, and sick look. 10/10 recommend to someone who loves a neutral shoe but needs a little bit of support for higher mileage.

Unfortunate Redesign Disappoints

Very disappointed with these. Loved the 4s and 5s but this just feels like a different shoe. I don't know how to articulate my problems with this shoe like some of the other reviewers but these feel much too narrow & they make my knee hurt. I can appreciate Altra trying something new but I hope they return to form on the next Provision or begin to offer some kind of legacy shoe that is like the 4 or 5. Until then l'll be stocking up on secondhand and old stock pairs of the 4s & 5s to hopefully last me a few years. Altra, I'm okay with your shoes only lasting 6 months as long as I can keep getting more of them!

Hi JW, we're so sorry to hear that the Provision 6 didn't work out for you! If you're looking for a wider fit, you may have some luck with the Torin 6 in Gray/Red in Wide. The Torin 6 also features our Standard Footshape Fit. Thank you so much for your feedback and for being a loyal Altra fan!

Perfect Fit...Size and Use

I've had a couple Altra's in the past. A couple wore out way too fast and then the toe box shrunk. After running a couple marathons in a month last fall I had some discomfort on the inside of my ankle. I looked for a shoe with a wider toe box and a little stability. Didn't want to rock the ankle too much. After resting the ankle I worked the Altra into my rotation. So far, so good. I've babied it somewhat not wearing it during sloppy conditions during Wisconsin weather.I think the best thing I can ever say about a shoe is that I am not aware of it when I run. Nice fit. Nice feel.

First Altra shoes, and definitely will not be my last!

I tried these shoes when the Altra rep came to our group run. just a 5K, but I got a PR, and the shoes felt comfortable. Last week I bought a pair at my LRS and then went for a 5 miler. I often start having issues with pain in the pad of the ball of my foot around this mileage, but no hint of it. Today I took them out and did 14 miles, a mix of road and light trail - roots, gravel, a little mud - and they performed great! no pain in my feet, and no pain in my knees! I have had a few knee surgeries over the years, so knee pain is a constant for me when I get into longer runs, so to get to 14 miles with no pain is a big deal for me. and pain in the pad of my foot has also ben a fairly constant thing for with with longer runs, even with my Hokas, which did pretty well most of the time, so I am pretty darn happy with these shoes at the moment. My heels do not move around at all, and my midfoot feels like it is well supported. I do wish the tongue was gusseted, but I haven't yet had any issues with it moving around. I love the toe room, and the natual feel of the toe box. The shoes seem to have a good grip on the pavement, and when I got out on the trail, I felt like I had good traction, despite running through damp leaves, roots, and both small and large gravel. All-in-all this is one of the best shoes I have ever run in.

Yet another bunch of Provision changes

I was one of the early buyers of Altra shoes when the company started up. Nobody had heard of the company and a small inner crowd of runners spotted each other in their Altras. Wow have the shoes changes since then. A great design got changed many times and not for the better. The shoes are less durable, the front fabric busts out leaving toe holes, the heel cup offer poor support, and the stability is unstable. You all need to go back to your roots. I I am getting tired of contacting you to complain about the foot box size which you just love to shrink.
