All-Arounders; No Complaints Is An Achievement

These are all-around great shoes for camping/hiking (backpacking TBD). Would recommend. Very comfortable - my feet are particular and I haven't had any unusual blisters (longest hike 6 miles). I can fit my orthotics on top of the insoles, and the footbox is wide enough. (Granted I went up 1/2 a size from 7.5 to 8 like I usually do with hiking boots for foot expansion and thick socks.) Compared to the 2011 Vasques I bought at REI 10 years ago these are *20%* lighter (I measured, but I felt it right away) and also waterproof. If someone was like “I need new hiking boots,” I’d be like "yeah you probably wouldn’t go wrong with these" - comfy, practical, sturdy, light, grippy Vibram soles, and no issues so far. When I picked up my feet and felt how light they were, I thought “hiking boot technology has really improved!” And then I thought that again when I was at the beach walking close to the waves and tidepooling and could step *in* the water - it was surprisingly anxiety relieving. No more fears of discomfort for days because of one misstep in my only boots. I often poo-poo new tech because it seems unnecessary, but I get it now. I haven't noticed them retaining more sweat than usual. And, their lightness makes them mentally easier to throw them in the car or pack them in a bag than before. Other new cool features were the reflective laces (safety), how the sole goes up the back of the heel (when I use one foot to take the other shoe off the sole doesn’t start to separate from the upper like my old ones), and the back hoop for pulling them over your heel is strung through the shoe and very sturdy. (I do wonder if it could be bigger for people with large fingers.) The lace hooks are also very sturdy metal vs plastic, which gives them a quality feel. These were fixes to problems I was aware of, and also improvements to issues I didn't even know I had. The main problem for me is their looks. Not terrible and the blue matches my pants, but I am *tired* of subtly gendered colors, and (as my friend says) *ready* for the full-function hiking boot that can go from the trail to the restaurant/hotel, so the only other pair of shoes you need are shower flip-flops. The fit and the form is there - but Merrell could really lure me in (and IMO open up a new niche that would become the standard) with a sleeker, minimalist exterior and more modern/imaginative colors (while keeping all of the practicality). My friend has the taller Merrell winter hiking boots that are all black and I wish these were offered in all black (or even all brown or grey) at the very least. I do feel like I should be pairing these with khaki zip-offs, a mismatched trail button down and an archeological treasure map, which I would wear if I had them and also a time and place. But I don't, so let's hurry up the innovation please hiking boot industry. My potential future caveats are that because I haven’t owned them over multiple years, is that I don’t know how they’ll hold up (including the waterproofing/how to care for the waterproofing) and I haven’t taken them backpacking. So far the soles feel less sturdy than my high-top Vasques (can’t feel a thing through those, but can feel a little bit through these) so I will still take the Vasques backpacking as my tried-and-true. But I’ll take these on non-backpacking camping trips, post-work daily hikes, and when I’m near water.

Not for wide feet
I have wide feet. I ordered up a 1/2 size and Wide, and unfortunately the shoes were not wide enough for me, also the arch was too high. Guess I have duck feet!

Don't recommend it.

Terrible quality, after not even a year the L shoe has a hole in its side ( I had to suture it a little during a hike in the Caucasus to prevent further tearing to no avail, it fell apart ), the stitching coming apart, shoe laces looks like something chewed them. The bottom is also so soft and wears out super fast. Supposed to be "wide" but way narrower than 2's that are regular width. The hook for show lace on the R shoe is soft and bends. I bought Moab 2 in 2017, I hiked in those in Yosemite, all around LA, and Europe. The only issue with 2's is that the bottom started coming off, the rest of the show looks great. And I can't even return it since I am in Europe for the next 6 months.

Good for rough terrain

I am a 72 year old woman who walks 10k or more 5 days a week on trails and access roads with a lot of rocks and roots. Pros comfortable around ankle and no slippage in heel. Easy to get on and lace up. Good grip on the mixed terrain in both and dry conditions. Looks good. Cons is I wear custom orthotics and there is not enough cushion in the forefoot as it causes my bunion and arthritis in toes to flair up. Also, I would say water resistant as they leaked slightly where the sole meets the fabric in the front sides. Took awhile and at least my feet weren’t soaked.

Quality hiking shoes

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have plans to hike in the state parks in my area with my dog this summer so I assume there might be some steep climbing or descending trails so I wanted sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes. I love these Merrill Moab hiking shoes, first they look great and they are indeed comfortable and feel sturdy against my foot and ankles. Great padding around the ankle and foot and the tread is raised in parts to grip the surfaces. Safety is so important and with these shoes on I feel secure and comfortable. Ready to hit the trails!

The perfect hiking boot!

Have a decent pair of boots but after 2-3 miles my toes start hurting to the extent that I have had toe nails become bruised. I had heard great things about Merrill’s in my hiking groups so I made plans to drive 1.5 hours to the closest REI in Cinci and found my perfect boots. Right out of the box they were so comfortable, have a nice roomy toe box and felt great. I took a 5 mile hike to break them in and they did not disappoint. They gave me great traction on elevation changes and kept my feet perfectly dry on the creek crossings. They got pretty muddy but cleaned up great. To wrap it up, I am very please with my purchase.

Comfort, Safety, Durability

I put many miles on my hiking boots over a great variety of terrain. I need a boot that’s comfortable (plantar fasciitis and flat feet!), dependable on all surfaces (rocks, gravel, sand, mud) and durable. My Merrell Moabs measure up on all accounts!

Lightweight but rugged

Received free product

I was impressed with how lightweight these boots are! I expected them to be heavy, but was proved wrong as soon as I put them on my feet. They are lightweight but do I didn't feel that in the soles of my feet. I took these on several hikes and I found that my feet felt great even the first hike that I took to break them in. The only downside was that I felt the ankle support could be better for narrow ankles, but I think that will improve as I wear them in a bit more and the tongue and laces settle in. Additionally, these are a nice color but they would not work well for street style. Overall these are a high quality and comfortable shoe.

My new favorite hiking shoes

Received free product

My first time trying Merrell hiking boots and I am impressed! Color was a bit darker in person versus website description (see photos). Fit was immediately comfortable. I am usually a size 8 and the size 8 fit well. I tried them with thin white socks and there was a bit of space, but with my go-to Smartwool socks, they fit perfectly. Enjoyed a few 3-4 mile hikes on various surfaces (paved, gravel, dirt/rock), including some elevation (~700 ft). Solid support on ankles when laced, comfortable uphill & downhill. Did a bit of testing on some sloped rocks and the grip was excellent.

Runs very small!

Received free product

These boots run very small and are quite narrow in the toe bed. I normally wear a size 9 in boots, 7-8 in sandals, however my toes were cramped both lengthwise and widthwise in these boots in a size 9. Unfortunately I was unable to try a larger size, but I wouldn't be surprised if I would need to go up to at least a 10 if not more. They did feel quite comfortable in the heel area, very soft and conforming. My heel did not move around at all. The grey color is nice with the hints of blue, however I am more of a brown leather boot style fan. I wish I could have tested them out further but they were just too small!

Comfy!

Received free product

I enjoyed these boots. I tried on several hikes at Glacier and Yellowstone Parks with no issues. The boot has ample toe space and feared it would be a problem as I run closer to narrow feet, however, no issues. The footbed feels cushioning, and absorbent of shocks; the vibram sole felt stable and with good traction. They are of average boot weight for me. I prefer lighter, however, have found them not to be a supportive. The gray color definitely conceals the trail dirt which is a plus. I made a few creek crossings to test it's waterproof abilities and was pleasantly surprised. However, he creek depth wasn't too deep as a river crossing may be; it only made a bit past the toe protective area. As per all my outdoor shoes I ordered a half size larger and my regular size. Good comfy boots!
