Less is more.
Less really is more. I’m sure my feet are stronger from these. They are pretty much the only shoes I want to wear. These are my second pair. I don’t run in them but I wear them everywhere else I’m allowed. Because the soles are so thin and flexible I do occasionally trip for catching the front edge and rolling it under. And the footbed is slippery when wet but I just cinch them a bit tighter. Neither is a dealbreaker. They’re great.
awful
I own an older pair of Xero sandals and they’re fantastic, just wearing out. I purchased these as they were on sale and I had the dividend to get them for free but they are awful. No matter how I adjust the straps my heel slides to the outside of the sandal and the rigid heel guard digs into my heel making walking in these things exceptionally uncomfortable. The only way I’ve found to keep my foot from sliding is to tighten the straps to the point that they are painful. If you’re going for a Xero sandal I’d highly recommend the trail ev model, but stay away from these.
Good quality as usual from Xero
Xero makes great barefoot shoes and sandals. The quality of this one is as good as all their products. I like that this is a one piece sole with good grip and a lip to protect the heel from sand & gravel. The toe width is excellent and the fit is loose, comfortable, but also secure. I normally wear the xero naboso sandal. But, for areas with high pebble or sand, I will wear this sandal for the heel lip. Like all barefoot shoes and sandals, the ground feel and flexibility is excellent. With the thickness of this sole, this may also be a good transition sandal for those who are new to the barefoot movement.
Second Pair - Z-Treks are the best!
I purchased my first pair of Z-Trek sandals over the winter when the old "Mocha Earth" color was on clearance. Living in WI, I didn't get to wear them much until summer. However, I have practically lived in mine for the last couple of months. If you are used to going barefoot or wearing minimalist footwear, these are right up your alley. Very thin and super flexible with a shape that allows your foot to splay and move naturally. You can feel everything under your feet, but still have good protection. I've worn them everywhere from around the house to day hikes, into water, and over boulders. Z-Treks are very comfortable and easy to adjust. (Just a tip - once you have them adjusted perfectly, if you open the Velcro on the strap behind your heel instead of loosening the strap over the top of your foot to take them on and off, you never need to re-adjust again!). After a season of use, my first pair still looks almost new. They don't pick up odors quickly, but I have worn them alot and into mud, so I have washed them a couple times. They clean up well and dry quickly. I certainly don't intend to get rid of the first pair at this time. I just got the "biking red" color to have a second pair and a second color option. I'm sure with a couple color options next summer these will be what I'm wearing anytime I don't need to be in dress shoes or hiking boots. If these are too extremely minimal for you, I also do own a pair of the Z-Trail EV's. I think the Z-Treks have a better feel and are slower to pick up odors, but the strap system and other features are basically the same. The Z-Trail EV's just offer a little extra cushion with the added layer of trail foam.
Very comfortable shoe
This sandal is very comfortable. It feels like I am not wearing a shoe, but I am reminded that I am wearing a shoe when I go over rough ground, gravel or other obstacles because the bottom of my feet is protected. I highly recommend this.
Take some getting used to
Great so far have worn them close to 50 hours now. Only complaint is I think the small rubber band that holds the slack is going to be the first thing that breaks.
A minimalist review of minimalist sandals
They are good. Be sure you are able to walk and run on your toes (or learn how to) before ordering. Lots of adjustability if you take your time, and they are well made. The Velcro on the backs will be the place that fails first. They are made for a high volume foot, but I was able to sinch them down onto my low volume feet
Poor lock down - for me at least
I am a huge fan of barefoot shoes, they are great for foot health. I picked these up hoping they would replace my flip flops but the lock down just didn't work with my feet. often the show would rotate outward underfoot causing pressure on my big toes making them uncomfy for extended periods of use.
Almost
I bought these in January and rainy NW, I would wear them to the office and occasionally around town and would get the typical odd look. But, these are comfortable! Cons… The one piece lace does not stay in place. When wet they get slippery. Gravel and dirt gets trapped in heal area and requires a full stop to get it out. Sandal begin to crack and heal area six months in
Not a hiking sandal
Comfortable sandals. BUT not a hiking sandal. They never pass up a pebble they don’t want to suck up. A bit of deceptive advertising. Comfortable around town sandals as long as there’s no gravel or dirt to travel on.
