Super comfortable, excellent for a long hiking
Comfy like a cloud, durable as a sponge, this is the 3rd time for me to try Hoka "hiking" boots. My second pair I sent back destroyed after 5 days spent on a trip in the backcountry. These boots aren't durable, in the first 2x I wore them they became stained from walking in winter puddles on the trail. The stains are like a dirt camo, I don't mind, but I find it humorous as a waterproof hiker most women would not like stained boots. The soles are cushy, but with that there is a sacrifice, they lack durability for anything except mostly smooth terrain, rugged terrain shreds the soft sole. I want to love these, but I find it a contradiction to say they are made responsibly when they self-destruct faster than any other hiker I have ever owned from any brand. Quality and durability are important too.
Comfy fit right out of the box! We drove straight to Monte Sano and hiked a few miles. They fit like a glove and did not require any time to break them in. I only wear HOKA athletic shoes now.
I have been a long time fan of the Hoka trail running shoes and hiking boots. I purchase Hoka specific shoes at least 3 times a year for the past 5 years. I purcjased the Trail Code shoes and was shocked and disappointed and how they destroyed my feet with severe blisters and discomfort after a 20-mile hike. Another woman in my group saw my feet and Hoka shoes I was wearing and said that she had the same specific model and she experienced similar negative results
So far, these shoes have been wonderful. Comfy from day one. I had a slight problem with with the ankle hitting an eyelet area. I put some moleskin over it. I have had foot surgery for a severely fallen arch. This shoe is very stable but does not cut into the arch. It is soft inside but it offers stability through an extra long and wide shoe bed. I have not worn them long. I walked six miles yesterday (4 miles longer than I have been able to walk in the past). The vibram sole is already starting to wear down. This is my greatest concern. Now that I know they are good, I will save them for hiking in the Canadian Rockies.
I tried a pair of Merrells before the HOKA, but they were just too heavy. These HOKAs were like wearing air. From the moment i put them on, I loved them. I wore them hiking locally about four times in preparation for hiking in the Alps for two weeks. They withstood all that hiking in the Alps can throw at you and I thought they were perfect. Midway through our trip, the sole separated from the top fabric and the fabric began cracking. I was so disappointed. Then the Vibram tread showed visible signs of tear. REI also declared that this shouldn't be happening in the four months I owned them with the type of use I put them to. I would buy them in a heartbeat again if HOKA can work out these problems.
I am returning these; there is a metal and plastic eyelet on the ankle that rubbed my ankle so severely that I had to change these out within two miles. There was a thin flap of material over it, and I had on my typical Darn Tough hiking socks, but it was very painful. This was on the left shoe. The right shoe rubbed on the back of my Achilles. I purchased these in preparation for a 20 mile Mammoth March in May, but I will be returning them to REI as there is no way I could walk that many miles in these. There is no "breaking in" for plasic/metal.
They are perfect, super light weight and comfy. I love that they are waterproof but it doesn't make your feet hot. My new favorites!
I bought these in May 2024, it is now August 2024. I hiked roughly 30 miles in these shoes and have already noticed the bottom of the shoe is detaching on the arch of the foot. I was on my backpacking trip so I had to continue on with them for another 20+ miles. I am really bummed because I loved them! I am headed to REI next month to see what I can do. I wouldn't recommend these if you're planning to wear them more than 30 miles!!
I walked a chunk of the Camino de Santiago in these boots about 10 weeks after a broken foot and sprained ankle. The boots were amazing. I did several 20+ miles days over different terrain, elevation gain, and in hot weather and got no blisters and had no problems with the boots.
